HF 24 - backup on standby, general advice

Tomorrow is hardfork day. It's a mostly non-contentious hardfork with the exception of a few things below. Like other hardforks this one might be rocky. Getting these right takes precision from the witness team, and not getting stuck on a block by a bug. When the hardfork happens there's a chance everything goes smoothly. There's a chance it all goes to hell. So, if you have major transactions you'd like to get done I suggest you do them today, or be prepared to wait possibly a few days in the case things go wrong.

If you have transfers you need to get done, do them today if you are able. If you're making big plans, don't do them tomorrow, and wait for an all clear and see that the chain has been operating smoothly for a bit.

In the event that something bad does happen I suggest you walk away for a day. The witness team may be a dysfunctional family but when shit goes south folks shows up and communicate until it's fixed. If there is a problem you can trust that many people will be working on it and communication about it will be poor. It's hard to fix the bug and communicate about fixing the bug, especially for devs who as a group of people aren't known for excessive communication. The best option in the case shit goes south, especially if you're a spectator, is to sit it out for a day and come back with a smile on your face the following day to a working chain.

If there is a major problem keep in mind that this is a blockchain, the data is on hundreds of computers stored all around the world, teams of intelligent people are on it, and you don't have to worry your pretty little head about a thing. Funds will be SAFU and secure. This is HF 24 after all. It's not this team's first rodeo, but would be like the 4th or 5th time the chain has halted... so, it's extremely likely to be ok with time, and fairly likely to be ok in short time.

My witness position

24 as a hardfork is pretty non-offensive to all parties and makes a lot of sense from what I've seen. New chain ID is good. Lower requirements for nodes are good. So, in theory I support the hardfork and support the work that's been done on it and plan to update.

The current challenge to the hardfork is that there is apparently some performance challenges with Hive Mind. So, the core blockchain would experience a nice boost, mostly in terms of reducing the requirements of servers to run it, but there's concern around how well Hive Mind will function.

None of the tools that I work on require Hive Mind. Splinterlands, Hive-Engine, and tribes all function without it. So, as far as those tools go, we're good for tomorrow to the best of our ability.

Since it's non-contentious, my witness is not currently in consensus, and none of the potential side effects impact me or the businesses I'm a part of directly I'll be switching over sometime tomorrow unless there's a hold put out by blocktrades et al.

The bigger challenges are for those that are running blogs and apps that rely on Hive Mind. They may experience technical challenges after this hardfork is implemented. It may be worth another delay, but I haven't heard anything one way or the other if another delay is coming. Either way, my witness and the tools I work on will be ready.

If it's tomorrow then "We who are about to collide salute you!"

That sounds a bit scary… ;)

Does it?

It's just... don't expect things to work for 24 hours. Routine maintenance, as it were.

Eclipse is a perfect name for this fork!

I can't wait to see what's in store for the future of HIVE, and I'm sure that even in the event that something goes "wrong" tomorrow, everything will be worked out pretty quickly.

I'm going to get the STEEM tattoos on my hands covered over with HIVE for hardfork 25 😁

Good luck on the forking tomorrow!

You got Steem tattoos? Thats a bit extreme for a blockchain!

I got these almost 3 years ago.

Steemit changed my life, and the direction it was headed. I knew that when I got them that it was very likely they'd outlast STEEM, but they hold much more meaning to me than just being the logo of a blockchain. To me, these tattoos speak of the amazingly kinda crazy group of people who call this blockchain home.

I plan to get the HIVE logo tattooed on top, without completely covering up the STEEM underneath. It will only add to the story the tattoo holds, and it's important not to forget our roots 😄

Have you told your story of how it changed your life on chain in any particular place?

I've talked about it a lot over the years. I'm not sure I've ever written a post specifically about it though. Might make a good one.

Any Idea which Discord chat is going to be the primary chat room for SHTF, to check in and see what happened?
