SHARE YOUR BATTLE Weekly Challenge! HAUNTED SPIDER

avatar

I decided to join the weekly Share Your Battle competition.

This weeks card is the Haunted Spider

The base card is present in the current starter deck and is part of the Death splinter. It is a common card.
On first level the card is:

  • Cheap 3 mana
  • Nice aim for the cost - 2 ranged attack
  • Low on life - 2 health
  • Slow - 1 speed

On higher levels it gets faster and durable and what makes it special is the poison ability, which it receives at level 4. Poisoning the card it hits. Cool feature :)

And now let's get to the FIGHT :)

The game had a special ruleset:

  • Heavy Hitters: All Monsters have the Knock Out ability
  • Equalizer: The initial Health of all Monsters is equal to that of the Monster on either team with the highest base Health

Heavy Hitters works only if a monster is stunned, and there is only one level 1 card with this ability, the Pit Ogre from the Fire splinter, so in Bronze and Silver games this rule is rarely used.

Equalizer on the other hand is influencing the fight a lot. Depending on the mana it is possible to use multiple so called glass cannon cards (high damage, low health) and upgrade their health with one tank. Also filler cards, who have low mana low health and are used to absorb 1-2 hits from the enemy can also be used as tanks in this ruleset.

And now lets see the fight:

According to the previous fight or my opponent I was expecting a magic team and selected Owster Rotwell to have the Magic Reflect ability on all my monsters. I was wrong, but even so it helped me immensely against the Phantom Soldier.

In the first line I chose Goblin Mech. I started to use him recently in fights and for this game I wanted to utilize it's Piercing ability.

Next I put in a filler card... which in this case as it's health increased to 8 was not just a filler card anymore but an importan defense line. A Cursed Slimeball.

My favorite sneak card is the Sand Worm. Though it is very slow and due to this has a high miss chance the 5 damage it causes can decimate enemies. And it's health of 5 makes it a good mid field card in my opinion.

As we have the front line covered we can now move to the ranged monsters. First is the Haunted Spider. As mentioned above, this card is cheap, has a nice damage output but can be killed easily... unless we are playing the Equalizer! My team had the exact number of
thanks to this great little card :)

The second archer was the Twisted Jester. He is one of my favorite Death Splinter cards, mainly against magic team, as this little fellow ignores the tank and start hitting the magic users (unless a Giant is in the way...). He was a great support in this game as well!

Last but not least we had an ace prepared to last as long as needed to deliver a victory. Venari Bonesmith can become a tank till the end of a game, if fed right. Combined with Delwyn Dragonscale or Archmage Arius it can receive 2 lifes/round, making it a sturdy defense line. We didn't take advantage of him in this game, but his buffed health made the victory relaxed.

This was my first fight today and I think it was a nice win with a touch of luck. :)

You seemed pretty evenly matched, nice victory.

Although probably a better choice of card would have been another sniper, it's the problem with these challenges, they can lead to sub-optimal choices, but a challenge is a challenge and a victory is a victory!

I prefer to have 2 snipers as well, but I don't think I could have killed the Mech Warrior in time and won in that scenario.
My snipers would have focused on the Creeping Ooze and as I had only 3 mana to spare I would have to choose the Death Elemental with only 1 magic damage instead of the Haunted Spider with the 2 ranged damage.
I preferred the higher damage, with paid off in the end.

Fair play, you won, that's the important thing.

I haven't played for a while (I rent now) but I do remember with equalizer (my most successful rule set btw) I always just pounded the front guy. If you split your attacks and they play triage and repair (which I ALWAYS played with this ruleset) you're screwed!

Then again I am thinking Diamond league levels here where there are more buffs!
