# How low can I go? - Splinter Stats Season 53 Report Card

(Edited)

@aussieninja

Hello hello!

Epona will go so well with Oaken Behemoth!

(I'm planning to buy enough cards to Epona the day after it's released. I bought Hero of Beyond the day it was released, and then the price dropped - but the current price is way higher than what I paid).

I'm still in the midst of my experiment to see if hanging out in the lower leagues might work out better for me. I think I might need to give this experiment another another two seasons to give it a fair chance.

One thing that I wasn't sure about... and recently learnt, was how your new rating was established at the end of a season. I wasn't sure if it was based on your rating (do you drop, say 500 points) or do you drop down to a specific league.

I asked in the Telegram which is chock-full of helpful peeps, and @bryboy27 told me to look at the Season Reset Ratings when you click on the League information. This is hugely important to my experiment because a big factor is if I can potentially win the DEC rewards for ranking in the top 30 of a league. If it was based on a number rating drop then it was potentially only going to work for me once... but since it's based on the league itself, I'm now going to try and win a DEC reward in the Silver league.

The question that this experiment might answer is.... are the DEC rewards and lower Tournament wins worth more than the Loot Chests in the higher leagues?

My natural league based on my power is probably Championship III - so can 30 loot chests and a DEC reward beat 80 loot chests? That's what I'm hoping to find out... obviously there is always going to be an element of luck to this.

The down side as Matt Clarke pointed out is that I might be negative affecting my SPS collection on championship points. It's definitely a concern and I really don't see this as a long term play. He also raised an interesting point which I've definitely felt the last 14 days... my cards just aren't as fun to play in the lower leagues.

The cards play so differently in the different leagues... and I've actually learnt so much by hanging out in Gold... and hopefully these lessons help me in the various tournaments I'm now competing in.

Another reason I decided to drop down was to give myself more tournaments to enter (A bronze level tournament is 10 DEC to enter if you're around that league... but 500 DEC if you're in Diamond) but what I didn't take into account is that the reverse is also true... there are Diamond tournaments that are now too expensive for me to enter. It's a really clever system!

I had way more success in Tournaments this season because I actually entered so many more tournaments this season! Why haven't I always been doing this?

I came 4th in one of them and it was such a thrill!
There does seem to be a ton of luck involved, I have no idea what the difference is between a tournament that I rank 21st in and a tournament I rank 121st in... I don't think I'm playing any differently.

Is 8 placings out of 21 any good? I have no idea...

Definitely found that in the lower leagues magic is far more successful for me. I think it's because Lord A makes far less of an appearance and the Haunted Spirit only gets the Reflect skill at Level 4.

I managed to max out Camila Sungazer this season. What an incredible summoner she is... giving you access to all the Dragon splinter cards for only 3 mana? Yes please!

I don't know if this is correct or not... but speed feels really, really important in the lower leagues. Obviously it's important in all the leagues, but to me it seems absolutely crucial. I think this is because at these lower levels, cards have so much less health, and so you really can get rid of cards completely before they've had a chance to do anything if you're fast enough. In the higher leagues, the faster cards have comparatively lower health so it feels like such a gamble.

All this to say that I'm not surprised Spirit Miner, Ruler of the Seas and Creeping Ooze at the top. I honestly barely use Creeping Ooze in the higher levels (I've only got it to Level 5 because it just didn't seem worth it.)

I have no idea why Spreading Fury has such a good success rate. I think I generally try and put a super healthy tank in this ruleset so that can use all that fury... but I'm not sure. I'm going to have to pay way more attention.

A big question for me is are these tournament wins really worth it?

I enjoy the tournaments, I really do, but they can be super time consuming as well... and in the higher leagues when you're winning anywhere between 60-130 DEC per game (versus 10 DEC in lower leagues) then it might not be.

Most of these tournaments require you to put in between 10-13 teams... and if you make it to the 2nd round you're putting in another batch. The tournaments in the higher leagues I just had no chance in... it was pretty much the same names every time... so I am seeing more success here... but is it worth it?

Total Ranked Play Earnings for last season was 18077. For season 51 it was 21331. If I do manage to get a high DEC reward for ranking high on the silver (and later gold) leaderboards, I could blow those numbers up... but for the moment 10230 is not sitting well with this experiment.

Bit of a trade-off. There's the luck of a GF more likely with more chests 🤔 And soon SPS playing rewards 👌 How long are you planning to continue as an experiment before locking in either way?

Totally... I'm definitely not sure if this is the right move at all. It's all about getting as much DEC as possible... can I get up the leaderboard in Gold high enough to get enough rewards DEC to offset the loss of loot chests and SPS rewards?

Unless I'm finding overwhelming benefits in hanging out in Gold, I'll probably move up again next season or the one after... I miss playing my cards to their fullest potential.
