In some cases, Wood Nymph is better than Goblin Psychic

After badmouthing Earth in a previous post, I figured I should give it a try and actually use the card of the week. I rented Wood Nymph and tried to see what she could do.

The set up

This was a combo I love to see: low mana cap and equalizer. Opponents often misplay here and use high health creatures, which buffs all of my guys. Based on the meta, I was expecting either Kelya melee or Obsidian magic. Because of equalizer though, opportunity is made weaker as all cards have the same health. And I was going magic, so the armor from Kelya would be less powerful. So I stacked a few really cheap creatures up front and then the cheapest mana cards in the back (including our friend wood nymph).

Round 1

I was correct in guessing my opponent's play, as they did indeed go Obsidian Magic. They also overspent on Goblin Psychic, getting just one damage extra for 2 more mana over wood nymph. Similarly, they used Royal Peryton for 5 mana when they could have gotten the same damage for 1 mana less (and this also boosted the health of all my guys to 6 to boot). This meant that while they outdamaged me, I had 3 meatshields to their 1, and this match was pretty much over before it started.

Due to a bit of luck on my part, my nymph was able to heal my chicken, but my opponent's goblin wasn't able to heal the fungus in time.

Round 2

Round 2 was kind of boring, just some magic trading back and forth. At the end of this, I still had two meatshields in play and all my DPS to my opponent's 0 meat shields and 2 DPS.

Finish Him!

My team continued to outdamage my opponent, leading to their victory, in no small part due to the combo of Obsidian giving magic and wood nymph being an inexpensive magic damage + healer. If I had an Earth deck, I'd definitely invest in the nymph, as she's a solid addition to an Earth deck.

Lessons learned

I'm pretty happy with having correctly called my opponent's play. Given the sneak ruleset, putting wood nymph last was probably not the right call in case they had gone Kelya. I probably should have put her second to last. This battle would have been a phenomenal place for Dr. Blight if I had one.
