The sneak squad: using some cheap life sneaking cards to obliterate the backline (weekly battle challenge)

This week's battle challenge is feral spirit, a cheap sneaking card. It's fast, but very fragile. It works best in low mana matches.

Its competition

One of my main complaints about it, is how it is outclassed by new cards. See stitch leech, a card in the same splinter at the same rarity with the same skill. The main difference is how much slower it is. But at level 5, the max for Silver league, leech has one more damage and one more health in exchange for 4 speed. Generally, this is a solid trade, especially in low mana, where an extra damage is a big difference.

However, unlike previous cards where I've had this issue of power creep, this is a role than can be duplicated without loss of efficiency. Two sneaking creatures is generally better than one.

The battle

With this in mind, I joined the following low-mana match after renting a level 4 feral spirit (for 2 damage rather than 1).

Divine shield meant even non-flying things would survive a round without taking damage from earthquake. It also meant I didn't need to use my life summoner (Lorna), and was instead able to use a higher level Dragon for the same mana cost.

My strategy was pretty simple: stack sneak/opportunity and blitz my opponent before they chewed through my cheap monsters.

I stacked the front line with chicken, fiend, and ooze for their ability to eat at least 6 sources of damage. Then came the damage: harpy, leech, and spirit.

The hard counter to this line up would have been Mylor - all my damage was low-health melee. Fortunately, my opponent went heavy on a big meaty flier and had magic reflect to my 0 magic damage (generally flying magic monsters are too low durability for me to like in earthquake rules).

Round 1

In Round 1, divine shield kept my fiend alive, and my monsters made quick work of the backline spirit. Earthquake took the shield off most of my guys and finished off my fiend, and did nothing to the opposing monster.

Round 2

In Round 2, chicken ate it to magic in the face, but all 3 of my guys hit their shots, bringing the enemy to 1 health. Earthquake took out my ooze and damaged my leech and spirit.

Round 3

My spirit came in quick and finished the enemy off before it could hit, winning me the game.

Debrief

I had a bit of worry in Round 3 since if my spirit missed, my harpy would have died before it could attack, meaning it'd come down to the leech, who is slow. If I were to redo this lineup, I'd have switched the harpy and the spirit, so the spirit would get a hit off, then die to the enemy attack, leaving harpy alive to retaliate. Fortunately, I got a little lucky not missing any of my attacks, but this could have turned out differently.
