Hello all you wonderful people!

The hashtag is an important tool to unite the people of the world and to keep up with what is happening. It is also a way to communicate with others and to inspire and empower others. The hashtag has allowed for so many events to go viral and to reach people all over the world.

When the Internet was still young, well younger than it is today, let's just say 2007. The use of hashtags was only used in technical IRC message boards and services, and by pesky musicians. Than the pioneering savant of the modern hashtag, a person known as Chris Messina came along and changed up everything.

On August 23 of 2007 Messina tweeted their this message:

"how do you feel about using # (pound) for groups. As in #barcamp [msg]?"

After that the spiraling rich history of hashtags kicked off and, today we have whole industries built around the hashtag, a.k.a. the octothorpe/pound sign/ number sign/ Shapr note.
