Pelacor Arbalest Challenge #1 : Overloading Damage

avatar

Pelacor Arbalests are armed with powerful crossbows enchanted to fire bolts at extremely long distances. They are trained to wield a crossbow in each hand and can fire both simultaneously with deadly accuracy.

Hi everyone, welcome back to my Splinterlands weekly battle challenge. This is my first battle challenge of this week which we have Pelacor Arbalest as our main theme. Pelacor Arbalest is a Rare Rarity Life Element monster from Chaos Legion Edition which his stats are shown below:

First time I saw this card, I was tricked thinking that this is it... Sloan +1 range damage combined with Arbalest Double Strike 2 Range damage = 6 range damage would be my main meta to end any of opponent tanks. So on early days I played using Arbalest a lot and guess what? I lost a lot.

Double Edged Sword

Undeniable having a monster capable delivering 6 damage sounds like a trump card on Bronze-Silver League. However the fact is that using Pelacor Arbalest often makes people lose badly. There are two points you need to consider beside his capability in delivering big damage.

1. His Low Health

Dispite his great firepower, 1 hit from opponent sometime is more than enough to kill him. You might think to put him in the middle which is indeed a smart move, however most of the time it won't solve this issue. His low health making him an primary target for monster which has opportunity ability such as Deep Lurker from Water Element. Many player can not solve this issue and always end up losing Arbalest in the first turn which later lead their team to a lost.

2. The speed... Slow

Slow speed cause 3 big problems. First Pelacor Arbalest tends to kill his target after the target makes it's move. This makes you harder to get any momentum to turn the table. Second, he tends to miss an attack. So its kind of useless having double attacks but only manage to have an hit. The last... which makes most people annoyed is that most of the time Arbalest dies before having any opportunity to attack.

Battle Preparation

I got these rulesets which I thought they were good to show how Arbalest should perform

image.png

  • UNPROTECTED ~ Monsters do not have any armor and do not get armor from Abilities or Summoner Buffs..
  • LOST LEGENDARIES ~ Legendary Monsters may not be used in battles.
  • 38 MANA

UNPROTECTED was the main consideration why I thought Arbalest would perfrom superbly... because there would not be any armor, all the range damages would directly reduce opponent health.

So here was my line up that I could come up with:

PositionCardAbilityPlan and Strategy
Summoner-1 range damage, -1 speedHis -1 speed ability was the crucial debuff I needed to win the battle. I could not let opponent moved first and I kept missing my attacks.
Main TankFlying, Magic ReflectMy favorite small mana tank. I hoped he could dodge some attacks and could survive for a few turns.
SecondStrengthenMy favorite magician in Life Element. Good damage and good speed and she could come up as back up tank
ThirdSlowHer slow ability was very important to help Quix controlling my team speed
FourthTank HealThe sole healer in my team. I would feel very insecure if I had no healer while bringng some range monsters. If my tanks were gone, it would be a direct game over for me
FifthDouble StrikeOur main theme for this week
The LastBlastI needed her big blast attacks incase Pelacor Arbalest failed to perform

My Strategy were simple:

  1. Delivered massive overloaded damage to opponents frontline. Arbalest + Prismologist had to be able to wiped out my opponents from front to back.
  2. Speed, move first. My team overall had low Health so they needed to kill first before getting killed

HERE COMES THE BATTLE!!!

It's a silver League Rank Battle of Water vs Life. I was very glad that I came with Quix as my summoner, else opponent would outpace my team and my team could get wiped out without having any opportunity to retaliate. Without UNPROTECTED ruleset, this would guarantee me a lost due to their combined tank Diemonshark - Flying Squid high health and high armor. Everything seemd to be like I had predicted.

Round 1

image.png

  • The game started as both party buffing and debuffing their monsters and opponent's monsters.
  • My opponent had 12 melee damage and 1x2 range damage. Combined all they became 14 damage per turn. It's a massive one, it should be worse if Quix did not debuff their Axeman.
  • My team had no melee damage, 5 + 2x2 range damage and 5 magic damage. Combined both became 14 damage per turn also. These numbers said we faced each other with same firepower.
  • I had my confidence because a combination of Quix - Time mage made my team faster than the opponent team.

round 1.gif

  • We exchanged heavy damage and I got the lead started by my Prismologist blasted away their Diemonshark
  • They tried to get the battle on even ground by killing my Conjurer in the last second of first round

Round 2

round 2.gif

  • This was the Slaughtering round. Opponent melee monsters all got wiped out. Pelacor Arbalest killed 2 monsters, Bandit and Uraeus, in one go.

Round 3

  • no hope for my opponents=. Good Game

Battle Discussion

This battle became one sided because all of my strategies worked well:

  • Speed control: Quix and Time Manage managed to get my team faster than our opponents. This made me killed my opponent first before they made their move, ultimately my opponent had to suffer 14 damage per turn before they could move.
  • Debuff: Quix -1 range managed to turn opponent Axemaster into a regular range attacker. 1x1 range damage was not something that devastating.
  • Support : Tank heal from Crystalsmith managed to get my Conjurer absorbed 1 more hit. That hit was Deep Lurker 3 damage melee attack. That's why opponent looked so weak, their biggest attack was wasted on my dying tank.
  • Arbalest positioning: if I set Pelacor Arbalest on the last position, I might lose him soon from Uraeus and Bandit sneak attacks. This also showed that on defensive term, Prismologist was a better defender than Arbalest.
