This weeks “Share Your Battle” is all about the Portal Spinner. It is a very interesting card with an interesting ability that gets overlooked very often. In many cases you want a controlled battle but with the Portal spinner you can apply chaos to your opponents strategy, but also to your own. In this article we will take a look at this card, discuss the pros and cons as well as what circumstances to use this card in. Furthermore, we will take a look at the team that I chose to sent into battle with this card and finally we will also discuss the actual battle.

Portal Spinner

Let’s start with the Portal Spinner itself and discuss its basic stats first before going deeper into the analysis. With 2 ranged damage, 2 speed, one armor and 3 health, this card is certainly not bad. For a Life card that will get a ranged attack boost anyways and for only 5 mana this card is always a good choice to throw into the battlefield. With higher levels it becomes stronger and can reach up to 4 ranged attack and three speed.

Its main attraction is something else though. It is his ability: Scatter-Shot. With this Ability this card is able to attack any monster on the opponents side. Sounds pretty cool, doesn’t it? But how does it determine which target to attack? Well, that’s the issue: it is random! That means that with each ability there comes pros and cons. The advantages are very clear to me: With a little bit of luck you can disrupt your opponent’s strategy and his battle order might be obsolete! This ability ignores any kind of Taunts or Camouflages and will just hit random monsters on the opposite side. This can include support units and therefore is very beneficial to us. Furthermore, you can use this card very effectively if you are battling in an explosive ruleset where the monsters next to the target will get hit as well!

On the other hand, this card compromises your strategy as well. Usually, if going into a battle people are trying to focus their attacks on the opponent’s tank or go for the Stealth strategy and destroy the opponents from the back. With this card, both cases are not really possible because the Ability does not allow a clear order of attacks. With this being said, this card is stat wise very good which is why it is always a great hesitation to sacrifice your strategy for such a good card. This will be neglected if you are battling in a ruleset where monster’s abilities are not effective! This is the case for today’s battle.

Uriel The Purifier

So what team are wo going to send out to help the Portal Spinner to win us the game? First up we need a solid tank. The Life Splinter has several nice tanks out there. One of them is certainly Uriel the Purifier. With 11 mana, he is not the cheapest but if we have 99 mana to spend, the mana cost basically goes out of the window! Furthermore, he has 3 melee attack as well as 3 speed. Combined with 6 armor and 10 health, this card is the definition of a tank. Additionally to that, he has the flying ability which allows him to dodge more attacks. The downside of this card is his Recharge Ability. It allows him only to attack every second turn but multiplies his attack by three. Anyways, this disadvantage we will not have in this specific battle, because like I mentioned the Abilities of the monsters will not matter this time!

Gargoya Lion

If our tank will get defeated, we are needing backup. Because we chose the Life Splinter, we want to do as much damage with Ranged Attackers. The problem with them is that they can not attack from the first position. Therefore, we definitely need a backup tank that can withhold some damage. In this specific case, our best choice was to take the Gargoya Lion. It has some good attack, paired with a good amount of health and armor. Because magic attackers were banned, this card is definitely a good choice for the second position although we will lose one attacking spot for the time Uriel is withholding all of the opponent’s attacks.

Supply Runner

Now that we sorted the protection situation, we are having three spots left to deal as much damage as possible. Because magic is banned, our number one choice must be Ranged Attackers. A very good strategy to get the best value for your mana in this specific ruleset without abilities is to chose cards that have no abilities in the first place! One of them is the Supply Runner. Yes, this card will get a pretty cool ability in higher stages but in the beginning stages this card is ability-less. Nevertheless, this card comes with great speed and a great amount of damage! Unfortunately, it has only 4 health, but that what our tanks are there for, right?

Prismologist

Another very great card to deal damage with is the Prismologist! In normal cases the explosive Ability helps this card to transition from a great card to an amazing card. In this case we can not utilize the abilities but because we have 99 mana to spend the high price of this card should not scare us away. With the summoner buff, this card gets up to 4 ranged attack which is a very good amount for the lower leagues! Not only that but in the case of this card getting attacked, it also has some armor to protect itself. All in all a very great card to deal some damage with.

Gargoya Devil

Last but not least I chose the Ranged attacker with the highest amount of damage that I was able to find in my deck. In my opinion the Gargoya Devil is a great alternative to deal some damage. Especially if you are able to level this card a little bit. Already at level three you are getting 3 Ranged damage, which gets buffed to 4 f you are playing the Life summoner with it. The only disadvantage this card has is its health but because we do not have abilities in this specific ruleset, we can just put this card in the back of the field and know that we are guaranteed 4 damage until the end of the battle because there will be no Sneak attacker out there waiting for us.

Example Battle

With the team and the basic strategy out of the way, let’s discuss the actual battle. Because we did not have any magic attackers and any abilities available to us, the battle was supposed to be very one-dimensional. I chose the quantity of attacks per turn over the actual health of my monsters, while our opponent banked on the tanky side and send out pretty much every great melee attacker he had in store. I think that he made a mistake, because I was able to deal a lot more damage per turn than he was able to. After getting rid of his first two cards, I was very comfortable to bring this victory home. In the end, even the armor of the Portal Spinner was playing an important role in winning this battle!
