Chaos Legion Packs Are on Fire...

avatar

Over a month ago, the Splinterlands team put out a proposal to see if the SPS stakeholders think it's a good idea to start burning the remaining unsold Chaos Legion packs, progressively, beginning in December.

The proposal passed.

image.png

The proposal establishes that 25k CL packs are burned daily from December 1st, until March 31st or until all the packs would have been sold/burned. Any remaining CL packs on March 31st will be burned, so after that date, the CL set will be sold out. After that, the team mentioned plans for a period of no sales before the next main edition comes to the market. Hopefully, they'll stick to that timeout, as it is much needed.

For the remaining legendary summoners airdrops for CL pack purchases, the burned CL packs count as if they would be sold, so they add up toward the milestones.

Currently, there are a little over 10.6 million packs sold, out of the max 15m.

image.png

Actually, a little less, since 50k CL packs were burned already starting yesterday.

If no packs would be sold at all from now on, it would take another 16 days to reach the next milestone, just from burning CL packs. So, they go out quite quickly.

But this won't be the case, with the holiday deals from Splinterlands and projects coming out with a very low floor investment to fill the void, there will probably be some serious amounts of CL packs sold too.

With that and the daily burns, I wouldn't exclude some FOMO at the beginning of the year for the last remaining packs. I don't think they'll last until March 31st.

If we count that the land expansion will start coming out in phases very soon, the TD and maybe GLG gameplays will be released too, I believe 2023 will be quite a solid year for Splinterlands.

That would be a much-needed course change both for the team and for the investors/players/supporters, after a hard 2022, in tone with the entire crypto market.

I have mixed feelings abut this one, and I have t say it... my fear is that this is intended to make room for another edition, which will put more financial pressure on us, the ones that are on the long term into this one, and will not bring more new people. The will have to buy into the new edition to keep pace with the strong new cards, and new people will find it more and more complex.

I had the same concerns. But the problem is, after thinking more about it, land alone will eat up a huge amount of cards. TD will have card staking too. Looks like we will very soon go from a situation where we feel cards are too many to a situation where we won't have enough to fill the need.

Complexity will rise, you are right about that. And they need to cater to new player experience, or it will be difficult to onboard and keep new players, other than through mega-guilds.

they have a huge chance with LAND to fix the economy. It's going to be hard to balance it however

Yeah, balance is very hard to achieve in play2earn.

How will land eat up cards?

Through staking on every land plot (summoner + a number of monsters) for increased productivity or rewards.

Meanwhile without new players there is no new demand for cards and SPS, burning seems to makes sense. Yet card value and SPS value continue to drop.

Pausing for a bit during the bear market right now seems like a good idea, how long can Splinterlands sustain without regular cash flow?

Play to earn isn’t earning much right now, setting up a costly competitive deck and still not earning much make it hard to attract new players.

May have to just hang in there until the next bull market.

As I was saying to steemmillionaire in the other comment, I believe we will switch from a situation where we have an overflowing number of cards to another situation where we won't have enough, once land and TD gameplay allow card staking.

There are still a couple of million CL packs to sell (and dropping because of the daily burns), and I think they will sell quite a big amount of them (more than they'll burn if I were to guess).

The pause after CL sells/burns out is for us, the investors. To drive some value to us on the secondary market instead of the company.

I believe there are enough reasons to think that Splinterlands will have a strong 2023 (I mentioned a few in the post), that may start even before the bull market in crypto.

We still need new users, or it is the same overall pie and same investors and just more tokens minted to change the balance of value distribution, while the value continue to drop for SPS.

More specifically, with lack of cards or very expensive initial investment (barrier to entry), barring new users, we may just see the player base shrinking and any value will not be sustainable.

I agree this is a problem. Renting is a solution that is cheaper, but I wonder how many newcomers can rent and be profitable right away. Not many I believe.

Yeah that’s exactly it. Fighting optimized bots as a noob is not fun 🙃

It is cheaper to just rage quit.🤬

Hopefully this is a good move. I have my concerns for this move. Thought it could be used for attracting new players

They have their stash set aside for marketing and rewards purposes. I think this daily burning will work as a FOMO-building mechanism. The more packs are burned the quicker the FOMO will grow for the remaining unsold packs.

So is this CL burning good for the economy of the game?

Excited to see what will happen next year.

We will see. Burning is often just a substitute for lack of demand or growth, which are hard to produce during the bear market. Or to time certain events in a certain way. Demand or organic growth would be certainly preferable.

That's my initial thought for I see it as decreasing the supply.

It's being burnt and it should all be gone in a few months. I don't really agree with the burning of packs but I guess they want the previous set to sell out before the new one goes up for sale. As for the holiday sale, I like Neal's CLP deal on it. I get a discount and my portion of what the deal would pay out because I don't have the funds to buy out those deals.

Initially, when I saw the deals I was disappointed. But I believe they intentionally left this door open for other 3rd parties to come in between with deals for the masses.

As for burning packs, maybe that's one reason for proposing it. To bring Rebellion at least during the summertime.

Let's be honest, if they don't make sales next year, they are getting really close to running out of funds.

I wonder how the interests of investors/players and the company can be aligned.

Tbh, the bigger the company becomes and the more VCs join their ranks, the more misaligned the interests will get. One needs to understand that and act accordingly.

PS: On the other side, the DAO is controlled by the stakeholders. And we will see how the SPS node validators network turns out to be.

Yes, my thoughts are can the game keep running without the company behind it.

It would take a huge hit, for sure, without the company. At least at the stage things are and will be for the predictable future.

That is really interesting, Adrian.
It will certainly help increase the value of the CL cards.

Thank you for passing this on.

I'm getting burnt out by Splinterlands and maybe this helps rejuvenate my interest, but reading the comments it seems like Im not the only one. I feel like I;'ve invested a ton into this game now for years and have just heard promise after promise. I get it, we're in a bear but I reallyh hope things in the game start to get exciting again…

AKA player staking lol

Yep, I started feeling a long time ago they began doing too many things at once, disregarding the fact we are in a bear market and the time will come when they will have to lay people off. Even with a full staff, I don't think they could pursue every direction they started in a reasonable time.

For me, LAND must be no. 1 priority. Player staking maybe could be made pretty fun and engaging, more than a search for the best yield (but I haven't seen it among their priorities for next year). I could even see something developed that can be done by a 3rd party, around the Challenge opponent feature: betting. But Challenge would probably need a little revamp, like the possibility to make it multiple games to decide the winner.
