As you probably already know the Battle Mage Secrets Weekly Challenge involves showcasing a battle involving a particular ruleset which is different every week. The ruleset we are to talk about this week is Super Sneak.

Let us see what this ruleset does before we get into the nitty-gritty of the line-up and the battle itself.

The Super Sneak ruleset is pretty straight-forward - All Melee attack Monsters have the Sneak (Targets the last Monster on the enemy Team instead of the first Monster) ability at the start of the battle.

Now that we've got a good idea of what the Super Sneak ruleset practically does, let's see now how it can be effectively utilized.

image.png

I normally describe a couple of options here if it ruleset allows for some variation but this one in particular is pretty clear, so here's in short:

I have listed all the Monsters which have the Shield (reduced damage from Melee and Ranged attacks) ability in the Modern format. I think it is pretty self-explanatory why but I'll explain anyway - you want to build a good defense for your back-line and what is better than putting a Monster with Shield there, well probably a Monster which also have Thorns (when hit with a Melee attack, does 2 Melee damage back to the attacker). Unfortunately we have just one such Monster in Modern right now and that is the Dumacke Orc. Great, you'll say - so that will be your go-to for any and all battle, well - yes and no because it is really susceptible to Shatter (the target's armor is destroyed when hit by an attack from Monster with Shatter) so 1 single Shatter will basically leave it defenseless and cause its quick demise so you've got to be careful when you choose you use it. Generally the beefy Monsters with Shield are a better choice. There are also a lot of other tough guys with Thorns to choose from - rows 4 and 5. However, no matter what Monster you go for to put as the last one in your line-up, it's a very good idea to throw in a Monster from the 6th row right next to it. All Monsters in that row have the Lookout (Adjacent Monsters receive 1 less damage from attackers with Sneak, Snipe, and Opportunity. Additionally, all Monsters take half damage from ambushes as long as a Lookout Monsters is on your team) ability. It's definitely very helpful for the sustain of your team of you help your defenses a bit with one of them.

Now that we know what the card does (or doesn't do) at the different levels of play, let us have a look at the battle I have chosen to showcase.

<>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>BATTLE<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<>

  • The line-up of the Battle and the Ruleset:

The ruleset for this battle is Are You Not Entertained (Allows the use of one additional Gladiator card in the match), Lost Magic (Monsters with Magic attack may not be used in battles) and Super Sneak (All Melee attack Monsters have the Sneak (Targets the last Monster on the enemy Team instead of the first Monster) ability at the start of the battle. The mana budget is 49 which is a fairly good amount so I can choose beefier Monsters for my line-up. All Elements are available but Death. I've decided to go with the Water Element.

The 1st spot is for the Cruel Sethropod. It's main characteristic is the fact that it is.. cruel other than that, it does not do anything special but that's to be expected for 3 mana. It has a very good amount of Health - 7 and also 6 Armor. So, for 3 mana that's pretty impressive. Other than that it also has 3 Melee attack even though with its 2 Speed, it often has issues hitting the enemy Monsters.

The 2nd spot goes to one of the newish soulbound reward Monsters - Coastal Sentry. It is one of the most oppressive Monsters in the set when used correctly with its abilities - Double Strike (Monster attacks twice each round) and Piercing (if Melee or Ranged attack damage is in excess of the target's Armor, the remainder will damage the target's Health). I currently have it at level 9 but at level 10 it also gains the Knock Out (does double damage when attacking an enemy that is stunned) ability. I normally use it the seconds spot when paired with Possibilus...

Next in the line-up is one of the Rebellion airdrops and the Grim Bardun Smith killer (and all no-attack Monsters in general). She has a new ability - Charge (The Monsters will use Melee Attacks from any position and will target the Enemy Monsters in the first position). Bear in mind that just as other abilities, it is affected by Taunt, so that's one way to keep your GBS, Bakjeera, etc. safe. Her other abilities are Piercing (If Melee or Ranged attack damage is in excess of the target's Armor, the remainder will damage the target's Health), Oppress (Does double damage when attacking an enemy that has no attacks) and Trample (When a Monster with Trample hits and kills its target, it will perform another attack on the next Monster on the enemy Team) (at level 4). She can single-handedly wipe the whole Enemy team in certain situations.

In the 4th spot I have placed Igor Darkspear. It's one of the best 2-mana cards in the set if you ask me because in addition to the Stun (When a Monster with Stun hits a target, it has a chance to stun the target causing it to skip its next turn) ability it has, it also has 2 Ranged Attack and 4 HP.

image.png

In the 5th spot I have placed Mantoroth. He's a pretty beefy boy with 4 Armor and 11 Health at the cost of 11 Mana which makes him susceptible to Giant Killer (does double damage against targets that cost 10 or more mana). He also has 3 Melee Attack and 2 Speed. In terms of abilities - at max level he has the following ones (in order of appearance): - Shield (reduced damage from Melee and Ranged attacks), ARMORED STRIKE (Any unit with this ability gains an ADDITIONAL Melee attack using its Armor stat. This allows characters to improvise with deadly force, using their gauntlets, shields, helmets, or perhaps physical attributes (spikes, hard shells, etc) as weapons!), True Strike (this Monster's attacks cannot miss), Repair (restores some armor to the friendly Monster whose armor has taken the most damage) , Blast (does additional damage to Monsters adjacent to the target Monster). He is definitely shaping up to be a pretty interesting card, especially with the New Ability - Armored Strike and the fact that he is a Neutral Card, so he can be included in any Element.

Following immediately after is Arkemis the Bear. It is one of my favorite tanks overall because all 4 of his abilities are actually very good in cases of taking heavy damage and also mitigating enemy attacks - Protect (All friendly Monsters gain +2 Armor), Halving (Each time this Monster hits a target, the target's attack is cut in half (rounded down)), Forcefield (This Monster takes only 1 damage from attacks with power 5+) and last but not least in terms of damage output - Enrage (Has increased Melee attack and Speed when damaged).
It is time for a quick round by round analysis:

image.png

  • The Summoner I am going with for the battle is, as you have probably already guessed - Kelya. She is my go-to Summoner when it comes to the Water Element even know I also use Possibilus quite a lot. In this setting Possibilus does not make much sense though as Sneak does not really work with Trample. Kelya provides a nice speed boost of +1 as well as +1 Armor. Of course, if you have Lux Vega, she will have an edge over Kelya at this mana level. My opponent has also decided to go with Kelya and have somewhat similar ideas as mine, as there is not much you can come up with in this combination of rulesets.

image.png

  • After 1 round of exchanging blows, I have managed to take down the enemy Diemonshark and I have also managed to hit their Igor Darkspear. I have a very strong team in terms of damage while my Arkemis mitigates the damage of 2 of the enemy Monsters so the enemy cannot out-damage me for sure.

image.png

  • Round 3 begins and I have a very significant advantage at this point. In fact I have enough damage to close out the battle in this round. It was pretty quick and quite painful for my opponent.

Well this was definitely a fast but fun battle, and an entertaining way to showcase the Super Sneak ruleset. See you next week with another exciting post related to the brand new Battle Mage Secrets Weekly Challenge!
