Introduction

Another weekly challenge released (Splinterlands, 2021), this time with Dragons theme.

This is not the first time a challenge with this theme has appeared (Splinterlands, 2021), however, as it is very general, it gives us the option to talk about any of the cards, which always gives a lot to discuss.

Dragons are very flexible, can be combined with any other Splinter and have several powerful cards. What I don't like about this Splinter is the fact that there are no monster cards available for beginners, as there are no dragons below epic rarity from Untamed and Chaos Legion editions (as with Alpha and Beta editions). We even have representatives with Common and Rare rarities, but they are all from the Promo or Rewards editions, which are not available in the ghost deck. The vast majority of monsters are legendary and have a high MP cost, with rare exceptions. Another point that makes me not invest much in this Splinter is the fact that it rarely appears in daily quests.

But there is a Summoner that I always have in my deck due to a game rule that can annihilate the best teams. I'm talking about Brighton Bloom, which makes the Flying skill available to all allies:

With this guy you can forget that Earthquake even exists, still having the advantage that his monsters are harder to hit with physical attack by those that don't fly. The battle that I will analyze below had this rule active and my opponent did not use the Brighton.

I emphasize that this analysis is from the point of view of someone who plays in the Silver league, so there may be opinions that don't fit in other leagues.

The strategy before the battle

The game ruleset were Earthquake and Odd Ones Out and there were 36 MP available. The battle was favorable for my favorite Silver team, which abuses monsters with the Sneak skill from Life Splinter, as all monsters with this skill have odd MP consumption. The only detail is that if I used this Splinter's Summoners I would be at the mercy of Eathquake, as none of these monsters have the flight ability. But I remembered our friend Brighton Bloom and chose him combined with the monsters of Splinter Life. Another point that favored the use of this strategy is that my opponent's history did not have any counter for this team, which would be high movement speed, presence of Thorns or use of skill and or summoner that reduces melee attack.

I usually use Silvershield Knight in second position as you can see in this battle (Greengineer, 2022-a), but with Odd Ones Out active I couldn't use it. Soon there was one more slot available for a monster with Sneak. With 36 MP I managed to put Sand Worm in second position, Silvershield Assassin in third, Elven Cuthroat in fourth, Stitch Leech in fifth and Feral Spirit in last position. There was 9 MP left, but as I could only select an odd monster, I chose to use Silvershield Paladin, with its good HP/Shield ratio added to the Shield skill.

Once the cards were selected, I could only hope that my opponent didn't abuse powerful monsters with the Flying ability (most of the dragons fall into this group) combined with a powerful summoner like Byzantine Kitty, which didn't happen:

The battle

My opponent came with Summoner Kelya Frendul, which provides one shield and one speed for each ally. In the first position he placed the Serpent of Eld with its high speed and Dodge ability, in the second position he placed the Flying Squid as the second tank, in the third position he placed the Venari Wavesmith with its Protect ability, in the fourth position he placed Nerissa Tridawn with its high HP and magic damage and in the last position placed the Merdaali Guardian to heal the tank.

It was a standard team, focused on keeping the tank alive as long as possible to eliminate the enemy tank and then destroy the enemy backline. Against Earthquake, it had the 03 Shield obtained by the Summoner and Wavesmith buffs, which would guarantee 02 turns without taking damage and 02 more until he loses your combatants with less health.

The problem is that my team didn't follow this same model, working to eliminate the backline before the enemy tank, and he didn't leave any defense in the last position, destroying his strategy as he went through the rounds as you will see next.

At the end of the first round my opponent had already lost his Merdaali and his Nerissa was already without a shield and half of his health was lost. My tank had losted some of its health but its shield was intact due to the Serpent of Eld and Flying Squid misses against the Flying abilitie.

2 Round Brighton.png

At the end of the second round my opponent lost Nerissa and Wavesmith, leaving Flying Squid without Shield and about to take 02 damage from Earthquake. My Silvershield Paladin was about to fall.

3 Round Brighton.png

At the end of the third round I lost my Silvershield Paladin and my Sand Worm was left with half life. The Flying Squid has been eliminated and the Serpent of Eld's shield has been reset. The match just didn't end this round due to my Sand Worm's miss on the last enemy monster.

4 Round Brighton.png

At the end of the fourth round the Serpent of Eld was eliminated, fulfilling my opponent's objective of lasting as long as possible, but not in the way he wanted.

5 Round Brighton.png

Despite the victory, in this match I left my team with the backline exposed just like my opponent did. As there were 04 MP left I could have increased the team defence by replacing Elven Cuthroat with Warrior of Peace, for example, leaving it in the last position. I would lose speed in the elimination of my enemy but I would be safer with the absence of the Divine Shield or +02 Shield buffs provided by Splinter Life summoners Lorna Shine and Tyrus Paladium, respectively.

I hope you liked the strategy of countering the Earthquake game rule without having to focus on monsters with the Flying ability. Here is the battle link if you want to follow in detail: Greengineer, (2022-b)

Mas me lembrei do nosso amigo Brighton Bloom e o escolhi combinado aos monstros do Splinter Life.

A batalha

2 Round Brighton.png

No final do segundo round meu oponente perdeu a Nerissa e a Wavesmith, ficando a Flying Squid sem Shield e prestes a levar 02 de dano do Earthquake. Meu Silvershield Paladin estava prestes a cair.

3 Round Brighton.png
