ECONOMICS LESSON FOR MY NEPHEWS

avatar

I am doing an economics lesson / challenge for my sister's kids and in so doing I am gifting them some tokens. Specifically the #SPS token from @splinterlands which at the time of this writing has a 350% APR opportunity.

The hope is they'll be able to make sense of these sorts of stats and have it mean something

I figure this will be a great gift with a lot of upside potential AND maybe even better it gives a motivated reason to learn about an interesting educational subject... ECONOMICS. This will lead them down the road of crypto currency and "defi" economics.

THE GIFT AND THE ASSIGNMENT

I'll be giving them a good chunk of staked SPS to start with then matching that amount when they get done researching the words below and submit either a written report with their best definition of each item or they can choose to do a verbal examination live with me.

I'll be looking for 10 good definitions even though I have given 17 possible definitions to do. I'll give a bit of a bonus if they try to do all 17. They should know I'm not a pushover I don't give participation trophies I reward actual effort and success.

The fun part is their mom is on board with doing this economics lesson and the assignment is open to her as well so she can learn along with her kids... but she'll be getting a smaller reward than her kids. haha

HELP THEM OUT
I am interested in seeing where people go to learn this stuff... if someone else is reading this article and wants to share resources tuned to kids or adults feel free to share some links or record a video sharing your insights.

Vocabulary to start learning

These are the words to start learning in their at home schooling.
Remember I do want economic definitions of these phrases.

  • Asset
  • Token
  • Transfer
  • Interest
  • APR%
  • APY%
  • Compound interest
  • Appreciation
  • Staking / staked
  • Liquid/Liquidity
  • Custodianship
  • To Exchange (Verb)
  • An Exchange (Noun)
  • Blockchain
  • Decentralization
  • Cryptography
  • Diversify

BONUS QUESTIONS TO GO WITH THESE

  1. What is the difference between APR and APY?
  2. Which value is usually larger APR or APY?
  3. When is an asset liquid and when is it not liquid?
  4. What are some examples of assets?
  5. What causes an asset to increase in value(appreciate)?
  6. What are the benefits and drawbacks of letting someone else have custodianship of your assets... like a bank?
  7. How can you determine the value of an asset?

Challenging math assignment: Because I know one of my nephews is way into math.

  • If you have 1000 of an asset and the APR is 350% and you can compound the interest once a day... how many of that asset will you have on your 18th birthday?

p.s. Maybe I'm open to doing this with some other family or close friends. It would be fun for me and rewarding for them educationally speaking and economically speaking.

p.p.s Peakmonsters/Splinterlands users ... if you create a post in response to this with insights and education we will give you a vote and a tip.

This is awsome @jarvie! Nothing like putting stake in the game to help encourage people towards education.
