Here's the ruleset

The Back to Basics ruleset is interesting to work around. The simplest approach is to buff magic attacks with Obsidian or Alric because magic attacks don't miss and they can go off from the tank position or anywhere on the back line. It's also helpful to put monsters with high life totals in front and high attack stats in the back where they're protected. You can see this in my positioning and my opponent did a beautiful job of ordering their monsters too.

Lineup:

Summoner: Owster Rotwell

I decided to go next level and bounce back magic attacks at my opponent.

Tank: Cursed Windeku

The Windeku comes with a high life total to protect my back line for a few attacks and does this for a very reasonable mana cost. The attack and speed aren't bad either.

1st position: Phantasm

The Phantasm looks like it's straight from the Upside Down. This also comes with a solid life total, a decent attack and good speed for a reasonable mana cost. It can't attack from this position, but I did anticipate needing to soak up a few more hits from the back line.

2nd position: Shadowy Presence

This usually soaks up 2 hits for 1 mana.

3rd position: Insidious Warlock

The Warlock comes with a higher life total than most magic attackers in the death splinter. Recharge is generally looked at as a negative ability, but it goes away in the Back to Basics ruleset.

4th position: Weirding Warrior

These stats are pretty typical for a 2 mana ranged attack.

5th position: Soul Strangler

The Soul Strangler dies to just about anything, but to hit for 2 at just 3 mana on level 1 is pretty great. Back to Basics is basically the perfect ruleset for this monster. It can keep swinging for 2 while my opponent has to get through all of my other monsters.

Did my strategy work?

Yes! My opponent had a couple of magic attackers that killed themselves with my magic reflect. My opponent never got very close to my Soul Strangler.

Do I like Soul Strangler?

Yes. It's maybe too easy to kill in most rulesets, but in a ruleset like this were I can keep Soul Strangler protected it's able to put in work.

What will I try differently next time?

You can hardly go wrong with Obsidian or Alric in this ruleset, but I was very happy with the team I brought.

Thanks for reading and thanks for all the upvotes, reblogs, comments and follows. I'll see you in the game.
