Dollar Cost Averaging Into Legendaries

avatar

Photography Workshop (1).png

I was reading a great little post by @revise.spt today where he shared his recent purchase of a maxed Djinn Biljka legendary card.

In the post, he stated that he paid $17 / BCK for the maxed card and set him back around $190 in total.

Personally, I think that was one of the most brilliant purchases I've see spoken about here in Splinterlands and it cemented by belief in my 'game plan' when it comes to getting maxed versions of these new Legendary cards...

Let me break down my path to max :)

Right now, I think these cards are super affordable. I know the argument is being made that there will be so many copies of them still to be printed, but sometimes I think we forget how much this game a grown over the past few months.

There just won't be enough maxed versions of these cards to go around and as an investor into the collectibility of these assets, I started dollar cost averaging into them.

So while Oshannus is double the cost of Harklaw and Djinn, I still buy (or at least attempt to buy) one copy of each...Every week or two.

Today I spent around $100 (around 10500 DEC or so) and grabbed a copy of each...

oh.png

I now have my Oshannus card leveled up to 2. That means 3 BCX and still a ways to go...And paying around $50 for a new BCX today was a bit cheaper than he's been trading for over the past few weeks.

8 more BCX to go!

djinn.png

Biljka has been the most affordable of all legendaries so I've been able to get it up to Level 3.

Only 5 more BCX to get this one to max level and I've been averaging him at around $20 per copy.

harjk.png

Harklaw has been an interesting experiment for me.

He's been around 22-23$ per BCK average so I've been able to get him to Level 3. But he's apparently the 'Lord of Darkness' replacement.

Here's the thing....I've never played with Lord of Darkness, so my experience with Harklaw and the entire Death Splinter has been...Meh.

I know people swear by this splinter but I just haven't found a good mix or comfortable line up....So yeah, any suggestions for succeeding in Death would be welcomed :)

Just like Biljka, there's only 5 more BCX needed for him to get maxed!

The Strategy

I know a lot of people would say....Keep the DEC, you'll get more SPS.

I know a lot of people would say...There are so many more copies to be printed, the prices will come down.

I know I know lol

But again, for me...This game is about the cards! And it's what attracted me first to Splinterlands, the ability to collect these assets and with these new Legendaries, I just feel like down the road...It'll be a no brainer to max them out!

Do you have a strategy for dollar cost averaging into the assets here?

I would love to compare notes ;)

Great article bro the only thing I would say you should consider is rental cost of a 1bcx copy vs a higher bcx copy. Sometimes it maybe more worth it to rent out all the lower bcx copy so it can afford you a rental income to rent a higher bcx card. When I started a month ago I had the same idea to dollar cost into a card wavesmith that I greatly believed in. Unfortunately the price went up a lot sooner than I expected and I didnt get the quantities I wanted to have.

If you still feel that max lvl cards are your direction make sure you make bid offers on peakmonsters that beats the highest price for the amount of bcx it may end up being lower. The current highest offer for a 11bcx is 14.10per id come in at 15per for 11bcx to see if someone snags and who knows you may get a biter as everyone is in a different financial situation and you may end up getting one for much better than you expect <3

Yeah my thinking is the quicker I get this maxed, the cheaper it'll be. I would never (or can't play) with a maxed card, so renting them would be an option for sure.

I dont use Peakmonsters as much as I should though lol I love my DEC rebate from Monster Market and Card Auctionz lol

so what can be learned from this if you put in a bid order at the highest bid you will still net over a 5% saving. I'm all about empowerment and education in this space as a whole. It works even better for higher bcx versions like 20.8 per bcx pickup bid at 2max bcx or 19 per 6 bcx is current highest offers that all have partial fills

That's not bad at all some people want to get rid of cards fast to make some crypto profits and those are hard to come by but they offer up some great deals. You as the buy just need to invest the time and patience to find such deals and built it up over time. I'm working on some of my commons at the moment to get those levels up and I think I might soon buy my first 100 packs with vouchers being that the price is below what I thought it would be.

I feel like I have the potential to get more value out of these packs buying at these prices and HODL and opening a few up if I have enough potions for them. Stacks on stacks! Not just buying new packs but the markets have some great deals as well.

DEC and SPS prices have been falling heavy and I feel like that's a major case of people buying packs with DEC and SPS. If it's starting to sink this much during presales I have a feeling it's going to really sink after presale. At last that's my thought process on the matter who knows if it's right lol

So what do you think is a good place to stash? Be interesting to see your insight into it.

Assets? Or more liquid crypto?

It depends on a lot of factors splinterlands has a lot of moving parts and some parts that are still stagnate we are waiting for.

As an example of this I feel like SPS will tank at some point only because half of the monthly release SPS tokens are currently being release. There should be another 20 million more per month dropping into the pool via ranked battles 7.5million, land 6.25 million, oracle 3.75 million guild brawls 2.5 million and remember that's per month not total. That's A LOT. Plus after prelaunch or if vouchers stop that would put a lot less demand on it.

A part of me is leaning towards assets now cards, land etc as a long term holder and that's because these NFT assets will provide massive passive income from renting out, mining the land for resources, items and spells, and all i've seen my deck do is go up in value. There arent even all that many people playing yet because it's still so hard to get your hands on packs. After prelaunch that's going to greatly open up. More people playing, sharing it, streaming it creating more demand and only so many cards. So 3-4 months from now I see Chaos packs being fully sold out and the packs going for $50+ like we see on untamed and Dice and demand skyrocketing because there will be alot more people with partial leveled up cards that are going to want to be maxing them to do better in ranked.

Short answer
SPS tanking after prelaunch especially if more SPS drops happen that are currently on hold
Cards and Land increasing in value within 3-6 months as more plays start playing and more want land to mine etc. There's HUGE amounts of $ value from wax and other blockchains they are connecting into and people don't really mind paying thousands for card assets on wax lol I see it on the daily there.

That's the one thing I've never understood....The WAX / Hive split...Are our cards there to buy or something or is there completely different cards for sale on that blockchain?

But you have made me think...This is something I wanna do, invest in the assets in the game. The price of the tokens will go up and down with the market, but long term, the actual cards and land are a great play.

So they are actually all player cards nothing "extra" you can simply convert the card, land asset, packs into wax and sell it on a marketplace of wax such as atomichub. You can also buy a chaos pack for example on wax and then deposit it back into Splinterlands.

The other thing to consider about card/land assets is while they go up and down in value all that time they are also "producing" via renting, playing the game, staking them on land to mine resources, sps airdrop at the moment. So they have more "value" SPS has value right now mainly from voucher drops besides that I'm not seeing much value after the fact though unless they are used for future airdrops, vouchers and whatever else may come.

You also got me thinking on this and I did a older post about converting in and out of wax but perhaps I'll do another here soon with some updates and more fluid.

I was also surprised to see DEC and SPS drop so much for the presale. Unfortunately, it means people are using existing splinterlands assets to buy vouchers and packs instead of new players bringing new money into the game. I hope that trend reverses after the presale is concluded. !PIZZA

I just feel like keeping my DEC on hand incase I need a push towards getting 500 packs after the pre-sale. Otherwise I would of probably bought some cards and started renting them out.

I totally see why people build two decks now LOL One to rent, one to play with.

Well I was thinking more of keeping my higher level cards so I can still play the game but rent out the duplicates or the ones I purposely bought to rent out.

I have only been focusing on Oshannus as it has the highest rental ROA among the three and if I am lucky, my Oshannus cards will be repaid in 6 months and then it's all price appreciation and rental income :D

I'm a fan of that card....Even though it sucks when you play against it LOL

Funny thing is that I encounter more of that card in the Bronze leagues then in the Gold/Diamond leagues. The Water meta in the higher league is still more around blasting your opponent away whereby Oshannus seems more of a balanced magic tank.

Biljka has been my secret weapon as a rental. I’ve been buying up the gold foil versions from $200-400 each. They are usually the cheapest on the market to buy for some reason but they rent out lucratively. !PIZZA

Am so loving HARKLAW I got it to level 3 but my level 4 Death Summoner CONTESSA L'AMENT can't play it until I get the Summoner to level 5.

Nice strategy of purchasing this monsters, they're not going to be cheap for too long.

Yeah thats my next goal...Getting some of these summoners leveled up but wow, the prices are crazy

The price of packs have come down a bit. I'm thinking of doing some arbitrage on WAX but it has its own risks. Then maybe to save up those earnings and buy packs proper on the game when its the proper launch.

I still dont understand the cross chain flipping, Bitcoinflood tried to explain it a bit up above in the comments...But Im a little bit of an idiot lol

Yeah it's a bit like exporting it to a different file format and the other file format sells for a higher price.
WAX is pretty easy to set up, although figuring out the 'ram' costs can be a little hard to wrap one's head around at first.

These are some of the packs that are selling on WAX:
https://wax.atomichub.io/explorer/template/splintrlands/328482

They're selling for around $10.15 a pack versus $8.15 on Hive-Engine right now.

For the record I do the same, buy something every day, I've got about 6 cards on my list and I just buy whatever seems like a bargain every day. I just got lucky with the timing on that maxed card.

That water splinter dude is defo more playable, but I'm thinking ahead to land where I think all of the current reward legendaries are going to have equal staking value, so I'm actually more likely to pick up a second Harklaw rather than buy that water dude.

But something every day, well, not right now, I'm so close to 1M DEC I'm just going to let it build up!

Yeah man, that's a really good point.

I love that all these have not only use case now, but big potential with LAND too. Excited to see where it goes.

Good strategy!

I don't have enough Hive coming in to support myself doing that, and so far I've been hesitant to spend my DEC because I don't want my airdrop amount to go down. But you do make a good case. I had been thinking that the prices of the new cards would go down, as they did for both previous reward sets, and indeed they were for awhile, but then reversed and started going up again. Now I'm thinking I should just stop waiting and dollar cost average in.

That's the problem I'm having....I thought VOUCHER would come down. I thought the GFLs would come down....So far, it's come down a tiny bit but not the dump that people have ben expecting.

I'm playing the waiting game. Holding my value in Dec for more sps drops and hoping that the prices drop when all the new chaos cards flood the market and can pick these up for cheap.

It might not work but I will wait for better prices and keep snapping up alpha beta cards until then.

I don't have the habit to buy cards all the time. Maybe that's a mistake. If I need some cards, I buy them, that's my "strategy". I've recently bought some, because DEC was losing value and I thought holding some more cards I needed was a good hedge against a possible continued price drop of DEC, even if I lost some airdrop points.

I think there are other ways to accumulate for the air drop....I've been betting on SPT lol
