Art of the Swap: Splinterlands Edition - We need a trade function (Giveaway)

Hey Everyone,

Today I was thinking about fun experiments that we can do with Splinterlands NFTs. Given it is a trading card game, I knew whatever experiment I ran should include trading. That led me down the rabbit hole of nostalgia back to when I was younger and had physical Pokémon and MTG cards and the gaming conventions I attended.

As a result I'm hosting an experiment that all participants of will be entered into a drawing for a 150 DEC giveaway.

The backstory
At one point I was at a gaming convention I attended annually with a group of friends that always has a large group of MTG players. Gaming conventions typically have a buy/sell market and a 'trader's corner' which for the most part we would sell our cards from prior sets to keep up with the latest standard format that would release each summer. That year however, after watching The Garage Sale The Office episode, we thought it would be fun to try our hand at Dwight's 'Art of the Swap'. If you haven't seen this episode it is effectively The Office poking fun at The one Red Paperclip experiment. A quick summary is that the office is having an employee garage sale and Dwight has a goal to trade a thumbtack for the best item at the sale by trading up multiple times over. Near the end he ends up with a telescope that he eventually trades to Jim for these magic beans which of course is ultimately a prank.

Ultimately, we wanted to try our hand and see what we could trade a single green basic land card, which is roughly equivalent to one of the new common reward cards, for by the end of the day. I don't recall all of the cards that we had throughout the day but it must have been at least 30 trades and at the end of the day we ended up with a Visions of Beyond card. This was a sought after card and would equivalent to a legendary. It was such a fun experience that I would love to recreate this in the world of Splinterlands.

The Experiment
As such, I am going to see if we can turn lvl 1 Pelacor Conjurer into a gold foil legendary of any set. This experiment will also end regardless of where we are at after 1 week (9/23/21). For those that are not aware Pelacor is one of the newly released reward cards and is effectively a better version of failed summoner. As mentioned above, this is roughly equivalent imo to a basic land card in magic as of today.

Market rate as of now: $0.22
Market rates dropped: $0.16

There is one major difficulty with this idea. It is quite easy to enforce a physical trade however, as of today, Splinterlands does not have the capability to trade a card directly to another user for another card. This is absolutely a must have feature. As such, to facilitate this process, I will be initiate all agreed upon trades first to alleviate scam concerns. I understand completely this makes me vulnerable to someone else scamming me and unfortunately I don't see a better way to go about this. That said, it does give us a second portion of the experiment to test: the general moral compass of Splinterland players. If I end up scammed it is what it is but at least we will see who it was and how long it took before it happened.

How to participate
To participate in this experiment and become eligible for the 150 DEC giveaway please read the following:

  1. Your trade should have a market rate equal to or greater than my current card.
  2. By participating you agree to be tagged in this post as it continues on to document the process.
  3. Ping me on the Splinterlands Discord sn: kotenoke letting me know you are interested and which card you will be trading. I will confirm with you there.
  4. After we have confirmed, leave a comment below with your trade.
  5. I will send you whatever card is currently ongoing.
  6. After receiving my card you will send me your trade.

As this progresses I will update this post with the exchanges.

Thank you all for reading and participating!

I was thinking of straight card trade as well. Hope it will be possible soon.

This sounds like an interesting experiment, however, I haven't seen The Office and have no clue what I would get myself into playing in your trade experiment. Also, Pelacor Conjurer's value right now is only $0.13 😕. Having said that I think having an official swap/trading option would be awesome. Hopefully, someone suggests/ed it to the devs. Until then - aren't there private swaps going on in different SL severs?

Hey there Ocean! The Office certainly isn't for everyone; their jokes sometimes miss the mark. That said, this is a take on the 2007 red paper clip experiment where a Canadian blogger traded a red paper clip to various people for various things and resulted in owning a house outright.

No worries about participating, this doesn't seem to be getting much traction at his point so I think it isn't something the community is fully interested in. That said I was expecting this to end up resulting in me getting 'scammed' and further showing the need to have direct trades facilitated. I'm glad 'THAT' point specifically gets across :P
