The Magical Madness of using Madcap Magus
I recently got back to Splinterlands and was surprised about the big changes in the game. You can now use maximum level units regardless of rank? I'm not sure if this was possible before I stopped playing but I am sure I never tried it. There's also a payment now for playing Wild Format so I played Modern instead. I tried all the magical shenanigans and one unit stood out, Madcap Magus.
This Week's Theme is…
No modifications to the standard gameplay rules and mechanics.
I got a lot of this ruleset during my games. I like it because it doesn't change the game a lot and I can explore and test to my heart's content.

Lineup and Strategy
Because of the ruleset Standard, I just went with the usual strategy that I remember I used when playing Wild Format - use as much magic as possible and pray to win. Madcap Magus was an exception because he attacks random enemy. Whoever he hits, it's up to fate.
Why pick this summoner: Obsidian is a fantastic Earth summoner who boosts your magic damage by 1 for all friendly monsters. This addition makes your magic-based lineup even more powerful especially when facing off against opponents with low health and high speed. If you're focusing on a magic-heavy strategy, a wizard nerd like me, she's definitely a top choice!
|| Has a 25% bonus chance of evading Melee or Ranged attacks from Units who do not have the flying ability.
|| Restores a third of the max health to this Unit's health each round.
xxx || When hit with a melee attack, Units with retaliate have a 50% chance of immediately attacking their attacker.
Why pick this unit: Pelacor Merchant is a strong and well-rounded card. He is able to both withstand damage and contribute offensively in battles due to his high health, damage and abilities.
|| Has a 25% bonus chance of evading Melee or Ranged attacks from Units who do not have the flying ability.
|| When this Unit hits an enemy, it clears all positive status effects on that enemy.
Why pick this unit: [put dispel to madcap and psychic] Regal Peryton stands out with its impressive speed of 7, maybe the fastest in the game, and strong 4 magic damage with Obsidian. Its lack of armor leaves it exposed to melee and ranged attacks. Its ability to quickly deal significant damage makes it a deadly opponent when not focused immediately.
|| Ranged and Magic attacks hit a random enemy target.
|| Unit's health increases each time it damages an enemy Unit's health by half the damage dealt.
|| When this unit hits a target, it has a 50% chance of applying Affliction on the target causing it to be unable to be healed.
Why pick this unit: Overall, Madcap Magus packs a decent punch with 3 magic damage with Obsidian. Without Obsidian as the summoner, he sucks though. But it’s got some real downsides. With low health, a speed of just 1 and no armor, it’s pretty easy to take down. This card might need a little help from teammates to stay in the game so make sure to add your units with Taunt or keep him in the middle away from all those sneaks.
|| Restores a third of max health to the Unit in the first position each round.
|| When this unit hits a target, it has a 50% chance of applying Affliction on the target causing it to be unable to be healed.
|| Reduces the Magic attack of all enemy Units by1.
Why pick this unit: Goblin Psychic shows decent health at 7 and can deal 3 damage but its slow speed and lack of armor make it an easy target for melee units with Opportunity or Sneak if placed at the back. The Tank Heal ability can provide crucial support to front-line allies while Affliction can hinder opponents by preventing them from healing. Silence is also good reducing opponent's magic damage by 1. It might still need some backup to maximize its effectiveness in battles.
|| Heals the friendly back-line Unit that has taken the most damage by a third of max Health.
|| When this Unit hits an enemy, it clears all positive status effects on that enemy.
|| All enemy Melee & Ranged attacks have a 15% higher chance of missing their target.
Why pick this unit: Spirit Hoarder’s low health and speed make it quite hard to play on paper and while it can deal 2 magic damage, it really shines when evaluated along with its abilities. Triage can help keep a backline ally alive. It's a helpful ability when combined with Mycelic Slipspawn. Dispel can clear positive effects from opponents making it a valuable asset in battles. Its lack of armor and low health mean it may need protection to effectively utilize its abilities longer.
|| All enemy Units target this Unit (if they are able to).
|| This Unit takes only 1 damage from attacks with power 5 or higher.
|| Reduces the Speed of all enemy Units by 1.
Why pick this unit: Mycelic Slipspawn is quite a tanky unit with its high health of 12 and the ability to draw enemy fire with Taunt. While its damage of 3 is respectable or 4 when Obsidian is present, it’s the combination of Forcefield and Slow that can really turn the tide in battles. Forcefield provides extra protection, allowing it to stay in the fight longer by changing any damage above 5 to 1 while Slow can hinder the opposing team's ability to strike back effectively by reducing their speed by 1.
Summary
This was a good battle to review. Standard ruleset gives me the right amount of time to adjust as I didn't know a lot of things due to the big changes before I left until I returned. I am happy that Modern Format has its own version of Alric Stormbringer or their version of full mages. The Earth lineup is looking strong with Obsidian. Obsidian boosting all the magic attackers like Regal Peryton and Goblin Psychic and more, you've got serious damage output while Pelacor Merchant provides a really good tanky stats and healing and survivability to keep everyone away from harm. Added to this, Mycelic Slipspawn's Taunt ability can protect your squishier units making this team hard to crack.
