Splinterlands Weekly Challenge | Magi of Chaos

The Magi of Chaos is a relatively slow Neutral card, with a strong magic attack. Though he's usually not at the top of my stack, I do use him occasionally when a high damage magic attack monster is needed.

Additionally, his Oppress Ability at the higher levels also come in handy, when it comes to killing off those pesky high health/no attack-monsters with self-heal. Though I have to say it's not always so easy to predict when they appear, and at the higher levels, a wasted ability usually also means a loss.

So what's the backstory of these Magi of Chaos then? According to the Splinterlands Lore it appears they're from a dark cult that praises the Lord of Chaos, and they're apparently from a place called the "Chaosium" (xD). Maybe it's just me, but I'm getting associations to the Sith in Star Wars (anyone here happen to play any of the Knights of the Old Republic games?). Anyways, here's an excerpt:

The Magi of the Chaosium are the heralds of the Legion itself. For hundreds of years they met and studied in secret, gathering ancient artifacts and scraps of forbidden knowledge, much that was once thought lost. As the convergence grew close they plied the void for its treasures and listened furtively to the voices in the dark to make way for the coming of the Lord of Chaos. Once the way was opened and doom poured from the sky they rose from their hidden places to claim the promise of power from their dark masters.

This surely explains the strong magic attacks and the slow speed. These guys are obviously very patient, as they've been studying the dark arts and old artifacts for hundreds of years, in wait of the coming of the Dark Lord.

Ruleset, analysis and battle

A 30 Mana Battle, with rulesets Noxious Fumes and Reverse Speed. Let's go!

First off, I want to use as many monsters with the Immunity Ability as can possibly be put in there, and then combine that with a couple of high damage monsters, so that I assist the poison in killing off my opponent's monsters quickly.

Since the Reverse Speed ruleset is active, the slow speed of my Chaos Magi should fit nicely in here.

Team lineup:
  • Summoner: Zintar Mortalis (Lvl 5)
  • Pos 1: Harklaw (Lvl 3)
  • Pos 2: Almo Cambio (Lvl 1)
  • Pos 3: Magi of Chaos (Lvl 4)
  • Pos 4: Venator Kinjo (Lvl 3)
  • Pos 5: Revealer (Lvl 4)
  • Pos 6: Furious Chicken (Lvl 3)
Strategy:
  • Because the Death Splinter has the most monsters with Immunity in this case, I go with Death. I take a gamble on summoner Zintar Mortalis from the Beta Edition, and hope that my opponent will utilize some Melee monsters that will get nerfed by him.
  • For the team Tank, a nice and slow monster, Harklaw with Immunity, Shield and Demoralize. He will further nerf Melee attacks, making it extremely difficult for any Melee monster to kill him.
  • An Almo Cambio as a second tank – he's a non-attacking monster with high health and Immunity as well. His main job is to keep the opponent away from my damage dealing monsters.
  • Then our star of the week, Magi of Chaos, with its high magic damage attack and fast attack speed (because of the reverse speed ruleset). He will get to attack 3 times before he dies from poison, which will hopefully be enough time to deal enough damage to tip the scales.
  • Venator Kinjo is mostly a filler in this case. If I could change something in this setup, I'd probably switch position with the Magi, to add yet another barrier before reaching my damage monsters.
  • A revealer with a decent magic attack and Stun will hopefully stun the potential healing monster in the front enough so that I can kill it off. Come to think of it, I should probably have used a monster with Affliction here instead...
  • Aaand finally, the classic Golden Chicken, to soften the blow from Sneak attackers.

And we're ready for battle:

My strategy worked pretty well! Opponent did use 3 Melee attack monsters, and they did have trouble getting to my damage dealers. I also managed to keep the healing tank from healing with the Revealers stun ability, enough to kill it.

Let it be noted that my opponent played a very similar team. What made the difference in this case was my use of a second tank with high health Immunity, i.e. the Almo. As the opponents team struggled to kill it, my Revealer (with only 1 health left!) could hammer away at him un-opposed.

And that's it for this weeks' challenge. Thanks for reading! Hope you learned something new or interesting about the Magi of Chaos. I certainly did.
