Splinterlands Challenge of the Week: Captain's Ghost - Lack of Opportunity to Oppress

This week's Splinterlands Challenge of the Week was to showcase Captain's Ghost.

Fortunately I'd just levelled the card up to Level 5 where he picks up the Oppress ability, unfortunately in around 50 battles since the challenge was announced I've had no real opporunity to show what he can do, water has been frozen out of the options a lot of the time, and the few times the rule sets have favoured him, none of my opponents have played no attack monsters.

I guess this tells us something about how useful the oppress ability is - not very, you have to get lucky!

Having said that, even without the oppress having any utility it's still a pretty useful card, as it's got high damage with the right summoner, and reasonable health, and afflict, which I like!

This battle features legendary summoner on legednary summoner... I win, and the Captain's Ghost does his bit!

The Rule Set and Line Up

  • 30 Mana - just about enough to play one high mana monster
  • Fog of war - no sneak or snipe.

Summoner - Valanmor - I'd just bought him, so was keen to give him a run out!

  1. Lord Aranthus - risking getting oppressed myself!
  2. The chicken - I guess in this rule set second is the only logical option, or even first?!
  3. Captain's Ghost - I went with him here because of the higher health.
  4. Medusa - I figured stun is more useful than afflict, it comes in so handy
  5. The crustacean - for the healing and shields
  6. Azmoor Harpoonist - to work in conjunction with stun, love this card. With piercing it's probably better than magic attacks.

Did my strategy work?

Beautifully, to see it in action click here!

You can see straight away that I've got an opportunity for oppress to work on that angel. It didn't turn out that way, but the opportunity was there at least!

Round 1 - A full exchanges with no losses
Round 2 - My opponent loses his Paladin, has it resurrected and loses it again! Lord A standing strong on health 8 still!
Round 3 - I take out his angel, and Captain's Ghost does do 8 damage but by that point the angel only had 4 health left anyway. Still, the intent was there!
Round 4 - He loses his Unicorn then his pixie, good old reflect did for the latter!
Rounds 5 and 6 - with only two ranged attacks left to my full house it's all over!

How important was Captain's Ghost?

Well, the 4 magic damage certainly came in handy, but his abilities had no effect - afflict didn't stick once and I never needed 8 damage of oppress!

My opponent's deck wasn't that strong - I think it was a mistake playing the angel with this rule set, it really is one of the weaker legendaries, and resurrect is most ineffective against magic attacks!

Final thoughts

Not the most interesting of battles, but nothing particularly spectacular came around this time around!

I've looked at a few other challenges, four in total, not one managed to really showcase oppress, so I guess this shows how much use the ability really is, which is not a lot!

I've got a gold Ghost, but only L2. Not used it too much yet, but Water does make good use of magic. Don't think I've had the oppress attack yet for anything.

It's a decent, cheap addition to water!

I don't think I've managed to oppress or been oppressed yet!

Yes I'm quite happy with my collection, I still tend to surrender when I see someone with a maxed deck mind, it's not worth playing them!

Nice breakdown here, I have to agree with you here, Capt didn't do that much, and oppress may only work in certain rules where players tend to use Lord A as their tank.
Anyway, good game!

I think it was designed to combat Lord A deliberately. Also good against the Cube of course!

Great strategy! And good use of Captain's Ghost, if I may say. Nice post too, so good that Splinterlands Community have you.

IMO it is not important if affliction and oppress were used or not. The most important is that you have them and if your opponent know you from earlier battles, then you limit his/her strategies. The 4 magic damage with respectful health is not bad at all for one monster.

Cheers!

Thanks for sharing! - @yonilkar

That magic combination was so cool, well oppress works and not hahaha and you're right Angel is not good on that rule, it is life is not good against water magic monsters.

It is cool that we have now a counter against the Lord A armies.
