Splinterlands Challenge of the Week: SoulStorm

(Edited)

This week's Splinterlands Challenge of the Week was to showcase the most awesome Soulstorm, and Epic card from the Death Splinter.

I have my Soulstorm Maxed, as that's where he picks up Stun, one of the more useful hexes, and once he's maxed he does 4 damage for 5 mana, with headwinds (nice!) and flying/ catch. With such high damage and 4 buffs, this is a great card.

His weakness is low health, at only 3, so he'll need the old mid-pack protection.

Here's a challenge match where his abilities are shown off quite nicely...

The Rule Set and Line Up

  • Mana 18
  • Equalizer
  • No shields

Summoner - Contessa

  1. The Skeleton - shield ability, with 9 health thanks to the ruleset
  2. Undead Priest - mainly to protect the next card agains snipe
  3. Fallen Spectre - most useful low mana card, hex to the max and equalizer neutralises his main low health weakness.
  4. Soulstorm - my main damage card firmly in the middle
  5. Undead archer - 2 mana for affliction, heal is so useful in equalizer, so affliction is a good one to play
  6. Alchemist - I had 2 left and I find this dude to be quite useful in low mana battles, to halve the attack of the front monster.

Did my strategy work?

In a word, yes! Click here!

  • Rounds 1- We trade blows, no losses. I'm a bit unlucky, neither my stun nor affliction stick, but my opponent's damn Cerberus retaliates.
  • Round 2 - he loses his Cerberus, thanks to SoulStorm's damage mainly. Good!
  • Round 3 - He loses his Kobold Miner, really just due to cumulative damage! My Skeleton clings on until the very end of round three, thanks to my opponent's damage being hexed to one in so many cases.
  • Round 4 - no damage
  • Rounds 5 - 7 - It's all over, my opponent is hexed to the extent where he can't damage me, and its just a matter of me picking off his remaining cards!

How important was SoulStorm?

Very useful as this was my main damage card, dealing out 4 damage, with is about 40% of the total!

His stun ability stuck a couple of times, but it didn't really do anything, as it didn't actually prevent any attacks.

Flying stuck once on the Imp, but by that time it was all over anyway.

Even Headwinds didn't do anything, as my opponent's ranged attacks were already hexed to one by the time SS's hex came into affect!

So the main use here was his sheer damage, useful in a low mana battle in conjunction with massive hexes!

How useful is Soulstorm/ When to use him?

I love this card, but you do need to be careful how to use him as his low health makes him vulnerable, especially against return fire.

Because of this you probably want to play him with either Mimosa or Clarissa, who both offer the headwinds hex, which, along with SS's own headwinds give some decent protection against return fire, and should make sure the damage you get back is only 1, rather than 2 (I think headwinds it works with return fire!), if not ignore that!

I also nearly always have Soulstorm in fourth or fifth position. I wouldn't play him at the back as too many sneak cards will kill him with one blow, and Death doesn't have many (if any?) shielding options. You defo need a sneak defence with this card. Flying will give some protection, and he's fast, so he might dodge a couple of sneaks, but that's a risk.

The combination of flying and net make SS a no-brainer in the Earthquake ruleset.

Stun means he's also very handy in the knockout rule set - especially with his speed, you can get the stun in early allow chance for some of the typically mid-range Speed death cards to do their double damage.

As to Headwinds, well this is a top 10 useful buff surely? Ranged is a habitually played attack by many higher powered accounts and I've had several battles where I've played Soulstorm with The Fallen Spectre, one of the newer Death summoners and then a shield monster up front, resulting in -3 ranged damage, then halved by shield.

I've won several battles using that combintion because of half my opponent's monsters doing no damage to my tank - with Soulstorm being a key player in those battles.

Final thoughts

So many of these challenges literally challenge us to win with shit-cards, but Soulstorm is an exception to this - it's no challenge to win with Soulstorm, he's a great card, and I recommend everyone level it up as far as they can!

Don't think I've encountered that card yet and wouldn't want to. I'm pottering around Gold due to my lack of power. Still a couple of bot accounts there, but they may have consolidated their packs. I'll have to do a post on my latest gaming status.

It must be annoying being 'forced' into having to buy more cards if you want to go up another level, I can see how it would put some people off the game!

You have to buy stuff to progress in other games, so it's not unique. I can keep playing anyway. Eventually I will move up a level. I may spend some funds on cards if I have excess.

Thank you for your Battle Challenge post. Good points on the Soulstorm's usability.
