Back To Splinterlands -Building My Team to Level 2 Summoners

I'm back with another post to highlight what can be done with only using level 2 summoners. Many think that the game only gets fun when you play the highest level of cards, there is a Elegance to being able to play lower level cards and be competitive. I always found it harder to have high level cards and go back and remember the winning strategies the lower leagues because certain cards become more powerful or less powerful in the lower leagues.

Weekly Challenge -Legionnair Alvar

I was excited to see this week's challenge because I believe that Legionnaire Alvar is a great card that I have recently acquired and I'm excited to showcase a good use case for it.

Edition: CHAOS LEGION
Rarity: LEGENDARY
Element: NEUTRAL
Attack: MELEE
Abilities: VOID ARMOR
Health: 6
Speed: 2
Attack: 2
Armor: 8

Reasons Why I like it
This is a really interesting legendary monster. Clearly it's a high mana cost with nine, but when you playing silver and gold league you have plenty of matches with high enough man and to not really consider it a negative. It's the biggest attributes are the fact that it has eight armor, and that armor is void armor which means that magic attacks will hit it first. The biggest downside is that it only has six health so once the armor is gone it won't be around very long. It would be great to add with some sort of repair to help keep it around as long as possible. It's otherwise decently balanced that a two melee attack with two speed that will be boosted potentially by whatever summoner is used.

Legionnaire Alvar really has an opportunity to shine in melee only matches, or matches where it's armor can be repaired indefinitely.

The Matchup

MANA: 29

Ruleset: Holy Protection: All monsters gain the divine shield ability which reduces the damage of the first attack received to 0.

Ruleset: Up Close and Personal: Only monsters with a melee attack can be used.

SPLINTERS: Fire, Water, Death

Initial Rule Set and Mana Gameplay Thoughts

29 Manor is right in the middle, but keeping it to only melee monsters means that the limited selection will make it more interesting to build a lineup. I assume the majority of people will play a lineup that either has death and thorns to start, or is fire and is built full of sneak. Either way I'm going to try a slightly different approach and go with water and Possibilus the Wise with a big tank of Legionnaire Alvar

  • Summoner Possibilus the Wise In Melee only matches, giving every monster to reach can be a real benefit. Also giving each monster trample abilities can be a real game changer. This is especially true when monsters have the holy shield and is protected from the first attack.

  • First Position Legionnaire Alvar
A really solid tank when you add two health, plus trample plus it's base stats. I think you can survive a lot of attacks with its 8 armor and now ate health.

  • Second Position Demented Shark
Anyway only I love playing demented shark for the boosted melee attack, now with the summoner it has reach and trample which means it gets to attack from second position

  • Third Position Feasting Seaweed
I love feasting seaweed, while it's slow giving a car that has opportunity trample means it can attack midline up and make a run

  • Fourth Position Battering Ram
Wow it'll only do one damage, I like to have multiple opportunity cards to increase my chance of a knockout and a trample run.

  • Fifth Position Torrent Fiend
I just put this here as rear guard support from sneak attack

  • Sixth Position Frost Lion
Another sneak attack protection card. I figured with a little bit of health, armor, and divine Shield it might last a couple of rounds.

Opponent Lineup & Match Play

  • Summoner Thaddius Brood not surprised to see the death lineup given the limited number of splinters.
  • Night Ghoul I'm a little surprised by Thaddeus brood being in first position and not cursed Windeku with its thorns, but given that it has taunt it shall be my target for all my attacks.
  • Archne Thug a great reach card with high damage and moderate speed, armor and health.
  • Silent Sha-Vi one of the true workhorses for death with high-speed, and damage along with its sneak ability means it does plenty of damage to the back lineup.
  • Uraeus a well played second sneaker attack card means those two combined well wreak havoc from the back.
  • Corpse Fiend this one is put here as a blocker just like mine were.

Round 1

round one starts off like every round and speed is the biggest factor, which I do not have the most of. That said the first round also has a lot of divine Shield where attacks are being negated and not as much damage as being done. I did get unlucky with the feasting seaweed Miss right at the end of the round.

Round 2

Round two starts and the lineups are look almost the same just a little worse for the wear. It isn't long before things change and I lose my first card in frost line. But I managed to turn the tables by the end of the round and have feasting seaweed take out night ghoul.

Round 3

image.png

Run 3 starts and I lose my second card of the match on the first attack, I'm starting to get worried about the sneak attack dual combo. Luckily for me I also secure a knockout of the rear guard by the end of the round.

Round 4

image.png

The start of round 4 looks really good in my eyes. The combination of high melee damage with trample is looking like it will take hold and get a good run. Fun my first turn, demented shark is able to knock out thug and trample to silent Sha-vi and while it doesn't do any damage it does get rid of the Divine shield. After attacks from both legionnaire Alvar and feasting seaweed silent Sha-vi he's knocked out leaving them with only one card.

Round 5

Chris Brown is really over before it starts and is a mere formality. They are down to one card dealing almost no damage and I am left with three cards dealing significant damage.

Thoughts - and Chances to Win Again

It looks like adding the trample ability, while boosting melee attacks is a recipe for success. The tools are claiming I have a 99% chance to win again in the exact same matchup, so I'm feeling like I made a good choice in strategy. While I'm don't think I would have won if I had picked a different water summoner, I feel the real key was giving my monsters trample.

I also think it was key to have legionnaire Alvar sitting in first position with so much armor to absorb the attacks, also having the boosted health allowed it to sustain more damage than normal. Legionnaire Alvar becomes a significantly stronger monster when paired with Possibilus the wise! I will have to try to pair these two together more often.
