Studying Facial Expression

Hi There! 💙💙💙

Welcome to another one of my post! 😊 I just want to share one of my drawing practice that I made. If you constanly checks my blog post about my art, you know that I am practicing drawing character faces since I wanted to improve, not only on the things that I like to draw like landscape and scenery, but also on the things that I think will improve my art. And those things were the human element i.e. people doing their thing. Just imagine drawing a beautiful plaza devoid of human, it will end up turning into a subliminal space, a subgenre of horror. Unless that is your intentions, the human element really gives a place a believable sense life and connection to the viewer. Those were the reason why I am practicing faces and some facial features, to bring out the life into my art. 💚💚💚

Today I drew a character with a hand that can reform into anything that he wants. During a train ride, a mysterious attacker showed up and began wreching havoc. I want to show his angry face as he fights his opponent on a moving train. I want to focus on his emotion and I also want to show his age through his face wringkles. 💜💜💜

I added a lot of sharp, pointy shapes into the piece to give off an edgy feels to the portrait. I also added a slight glow into the hands to show some mystique in it. I also distorted the background into a blury, messy and out of focus image to give it the sense of movement without taking too much attention from the main subject. 😇

Now, here are the steps that I followed in making this piece: ✔️

Step 1 ✔️

First, did colored the background gray. This helps me feel at ease as sometimes the color white gives of this weird feeling of uneasiness before starting a piece. I then quickly drew a loomis head then immediately adding a quick scribble of the character. 😄

Step 2 ✔️

I then redrew the lines while also fixing some proportion mistakes. This time, I tried to be as clean as possible with my line because it will be included in my final output. 🙂

This first image includes the second redraw as I fix some proportions and forshorthening issues.

Then, I redraw the lineart for the third time, but this time, I tried to be as clean as possible with the lines.

Step 3 ✔️

Step 3 is when I added the flat colors. I make sure to place them in different layes so I could easily access them if I need them. Then, I placed them all into a single folder. I don't know if this is the most effecient method so that is how I do it. 😅

Step 4 ✔️

Next that I added are the shadows. I tried to be as dynamic as much as possible with my shadows, like how I used the color orange as the shadow for my peach or how I used the color blue as the shadows for the color red. 😉

Step 5 ✔️

Next is I added some flavors to my painting by adding some midtones and highlights.

I painted the face using three different color: Yellow for the forehead since it is a boney part, red for the cheeks and, nose and ears since those part has more blood in it and lastly, blue on the lower part of the face to show that the character has some shaved face. 🤡

After that is I added the highlights. I added some on the hair and clothes. That is when I noticed that my shadows are too light so I adjusted it accordingly.

Step 6 ✔️

Next is I added some glow into the eyes and into the hands to make the piece more attactive. I specially love the effects on the hands since it gives a more powerful sense of mistiques in it. 😍

Step 7 ✔️

As for the background, I made two version of it since I don't know what story suites this character the best. I started it by adding the grayscale first.

Here is the one I go with in the end. A more angular lines to show that this character is looking at something. It helps the viewer's brain to image that there is something happening outside the image, well, atleast that was my intentions here. 😆
image.png

Here is one of my draft for the background. I want it to be a large place, like a temple or cathedral and the character is looking into something powerful, challenging it into a fight. I really love this concept but I can't make it work on my painting.

Step 8 ✔️

Lastly is I added the colors for the background. I colored the church concept first but I did not like it at the end. I don't know how to convey the sense of power that the enemy have compared to this character. and I think the compostion is just too rigid and linear to work. 😅

image.png

Next is a more successful attempt for me. Not only that it is more dynamic, it also gives the sense of movement that the other one lacks.
image.png

To finish up this painting, I fixed the values on the color to match the background and it was awsome! 😁

And that is how I made this piece! I hope you enjoyed it. ❤️

What should I work on next time? 🤔

I think should work on the facial expression more since I think I did mine too stiff. I also think that I should work on my line art more. Also, I still lack the proper sense of proportions in my drawing. So far, I think that I still have a long way to go through as I study drawing and painting.

Well, that is all for me now! 😖

Thank you for stopping by! 👋

I also drew a blob of circles the first time I tried digital art, haha! You are not alone, Shin! Yeah, I still need more practice too in all aspects. You did well, Shin. Also, love the color combinations!
