First time playing “Splinterlands”

First off, this game is super fun and addicting. If it weren’t for the regularly-decreasing Dark Energy Crystal capture rate, I’d play this forever without eating and sleeping.

Splinterlands is an online card game built on blockchain technology. There are two main types of cards, summoners and the monsters they summon. After that distinction, there are six types—fire, water, earth, life, death, and dragon.

The game features an in-game economy that can be entered into via crypto/e-pay through fiat platforms like PayPal.

There are Splinterlands Shards, which is crypto you can stake in the game but also Dark Energy Crystals which you get by winning battles and can use to purchase new cards.

To avoid bot-farming, every battle lowers the percentage of Dark Energy Crystals you can win but recoups by 25% every 24 hours.

There are also daily quests every 24 hours which give you access to dark crystals or cards.

My first daily quest, which involved winning five battles with fire cards, awarded me with a fire monster card—“Venari Heatsmith” a rat alchemist who takes shield damage from magic attacks instead of health damage as its special ability. Some monster cards have one or more special abilities which affect either them or their team members.

Battling involves the use of health, shield, melee, range, magic, and speed.

Health are points which go down, if you don’t have shield points, after being attacked by melee, magic, or range attacks.

Shields points act as a buffer to protect your health against melee and range attacks but not magic.

Melee are short range attacks from melee type monsters who can only attack from the front row or due to special abilities that allow them to do so from secondary positions.

Range are long range attacks from range monsters who can only attack from secondary positions and not the front row.

Magic are long range monsters who can attack from front and secondary positions—magic attacks directly hit health and never miss.

Speed are points which determine what order monsters attack in and whether or not attacks hit.

Earlier when I mentioned front row and secondary positions, I was referring to the battlefield set up. After choosing a summoner, who each have an ability that increases or decreases one of the main stats (health, shield, melee, range, magic, or speed), you pick two to six monsters to battle with. The usual line-up is one tank melee monster with high shield or health, two to three range or magic, and either a support monster with status effect abilities (increase ally monster health or decrease enemy health) or another tank monster with recommended self-healing ability.

Apologies if that was a lot of information. Splinterlands is a very fun game and I encourage everyone to join because it’s interesting to learn and play and share with others. It’s another step in the new crypto world journey that leads to freedom from the old world. Hopefully I’ll see you there!
