Splinterlands Investment Strategy Advice Request - Getting Involved After Missing The Gold Rush

avatar
(Edited)

I knew of Splinterlands since the early days and decided NOT to get involved because I feared that I'd get lost in gameplay that'd pull me away from my home business. Damn.

I have roughly 10 promo cards with spell book codes on them from various conferences and shows, hoping they'd be worth something in the future, but never used any.

The only cards I had before starting to play last month were from 1 Beta pack I was given as a prize for a contest.

In that pack I got:

image.png

I think that I played a few training battles and struggled to grasp the gameplay. I closed the game and barely touched it for years.

Fast forward, in that Spongebob meme voice, "4 years laturrr"...

Ironically, the Alric Stormbringer is a relatively valuable card at today's prices at $160, but it's risen quite a bit in the last month. The same goes for Medusa at around $30. I'm pretty happy to have something from the Beta edition. At no cost, no complaints here.

After playing with the base cards I got from buying a Spell Book, I was lucky to get a boost via delegated cards from @joshman at first (who is apparently a SPL legend), @blewitt a few weeks later, and a surprise set from @ninjamike who got me over 5,000 Power. This helped me get up to 9 reward chests per season, but is presently more beneficial in that it exposed me to different cards and abilities. In turn, I was able to strategize better matchups and win at a much higher rate. Reflect via Owster Rotwell is extremely helpful with all of the water deck magic players at my level.

I also used my humble Hive payouts to buy some cards at first in the $5-$13 range, while also stacking smaller cards with DEC payouts. After giving it some thought, I finally invested an initial budget of $100 from some recent liquid staking interest I had on another chain. It was VERY annoying sending it to an exchange, swapping it into USD, buying LTC during a volatile time, and then sending the LTC to buy Credits, but I made it happen with only about $2.50 lost in the mix.

After lots of analysis, I carefully chose to buy the following cards to get my power up and also create some rental opportunities.

image.png

DJINN OSHANNUS for $50.97. This is my new sledge hammer in my water deck and has already boosted my SPS payouts a bit. The price would fall slightly below while tracking it, down to $48, but it was getting sniped by purchasing bots before I could grab it. The price has fallen to around $49.50 since, but it's all the same at this point. I just wanted to card for its in-game value, the decreased magic attack benefit, and the high speed to almost always get the first hit in.

image.png

PHANTOM SOLDIER for $29.00. I thought this was a great value for its deck power, while it also pairs well with the summoner below. The flying perk will come in handy, as well as the decent speed. I felt this would be a good card to appreciate in value over time with a circulation of only 7,750.

image.png

DELWYN DRAGONSCALE for $12.50. This card was recommended by @joshman and for good reason. While the mana cost is a little high, the perk of having a camouflaged army of magic casters is very valuable to me to trick those who aren't expecting it. I want to grab the DARKEST MAGE next for its low mana cost. It's floating around $12.50 now, so I'll probably get it in a week after my next Hive payouts come through, to add some 5,540 leftover credits.

The last card I'd like to get in the short term is the ARMORSMITH at around $14.75. I think it's a great perk and it'll also provide a DEC payout bonus because it's from the Promo Edition.

So after this introduction to my starting point, I'm battling and earning quest chests. I've gotten one gold L3 PELACOR DECEIVER as my most thrilling haul from those so far I believe.

I'll be getting more SPS airdropped now, more DEC payouts, more season chests, and rental DEC over time to wash out this last small $100 investment. Overall, I'll guess that I put in about $150 so far, which is not much at all. I just want to start small and learn the game before I start ramping up.

Your advice is cordially requested:

So at this point, I'm split on the best way to invest in this game going forward. Should I continue to buy cards that appeal to me the most? I was debating buying a $200 card, but then felt that was a bit strong of a move out of the gate. Beta and Untamed packs are super expensive, and I'm not sure if they're the wisest way to go. With the new Chaos Legion release, perhaps it'll be best to stock up on a lot of decks with a fresh start going forward. Land is appealing, but when it was $30 in the spring and $700+ now, it doesn't feel right to make a move there just yet. I understand that there's a limited supply and that the investment will likely be returned, but I just don't know if that's the best next step. It's not a question of the funds, but I just want to allocate what I spend wisely, and not be reckless to fomo in after years of lost building time.

I'll keep posting on this if you'd like to follow along. At this point, I'm simply looking for advice from the community on how to most wisely invest in the near-term as a game player for fun, with card rental and DEC earning somewhat in mind, but not as a mega-investor until I feel the prices have cooled off. While I don't know how to value individual cards, the current unopened pack and land prices make me feel that things are a bit too hot right now.

PS - should I use my physical promo cards or make a second/third account to build up with my main account via delegations? Are the cards from a few conferences and trade shows worth anything outside of their promo codes? As long as I don't feel like it's a waste of time to complete 1-2 extra quests a day for the chests and extra sets from the seasons, perhaps that's a good low-risk next step as well?

Thanks,
@steemmatt (also my SPL name)

i am not 100% sure how will they do the chaos legion battles. they were talking about splitting it. So chaos will probably not fight with beta.
if someone confirms that untamed would be used in classic and new battles maybe that could be a good investment for new people.
someone will probably confirm it or tell me that i am full of it :D

I thought I heard that alpha (not beta) might be phased out like you're saying, but hey, I know the least of anyone. If they split beta out too, would the cards just be dusty NFTs we'll hope won't crash in value? Thanks for sharing your ideas.

alpha and beta are almost the same. from what i understood alpha beta untamed will stay in this battle group and chaos will go to new (i think i just presumed that it will be together with untamed) one.
my understanding is that you will have an option to fight in old or new system. the rewards for the old battles will still be here. also i think they mentioned that using "older" cards on land will be more beneficial.
in i quick search i did not find anything, so can't be sure.

and i am far from expert on all going on in spliterlands, just listened some AMA, so i could be really really wrong :D

I would not recommend buying expensive Beta/Untamed packs unless you are feeling really lucky. They are like expensive lottery tickets.

I don't know what to say about land since it hasn't been implemented. However I also missed out and don't own any land. I have no plans to buy any.

It's difficult for me to give you advice on what cards to buy. Things have gotten so much more complictated. In the old day there were no collection scores or renting out cards or separate rewards pools for editions of cards. Back then buying cards that apppealed to you would have been a strategy that worked.

Here's an example of what I'm talking about. In the old days investing in summoners was great because of their price appreciation. I think today they would still have good price appreciation. However the problem is that they are expensive relative to the collection score they provide and they don't seem to bring in that much money on the rental market. Though, at the end of the day if you are serious about playing, buying lots of summoners should be one of your priorities because they are required for playing leveled up cards that you accumulate over time.

One general strategy many players use is to have one weak splinter that they don't invest much if any money into. Because you have the option of swapping your daily quest once per quest so you never get stuck being forced to use that splinter for a quest. Its also fun to pick a splinter that is your favorite and invest the most money into that splinter.

If I were you I would be prepared to spend money when chaos legion cards flood the market. Hopefully that will also drive down the price of the current rewards cards as well so you can buy lots of those up too.

I sadly didn't even realize you can swap quests until a few days ago. I usually just jumped right in and flopped around with splinters I'm no good in, but not anymore.

The advice on summoners at this stage is wise for leveling them up in the future. I didn't really think that far out as I'm still getting my first ones. I think that many summoners aren't as valuable as we'd hope because the spell deck gives access to a good set of them, where easy-going players can enjoy the game without needing to buy more for a while. Perhaps like me, they'll open their eyes and see that you need to get stronger summoners to support higher game play. I went ahead and bought LUNAKARI MISTRESS with my last post's payouts this AM. I like the low supply and it was important to get my Death deck up on the spell side. With the mana cost, it won't be something I can use all the time, but it's a strong card for me in bronze and 200 power or "collection score" if that's the proper term.

If I get a plot, it'll just be one to have a slice of the pie and open up the opportunities for the full game play using it down the line. I couldn't justify doing more than that. But first, I want to figure out how much I want to put into Chaos Legion packs. The SPS rate I have is nothing, so I either have to bulk up there for the right to get packs early, yet I don't know if there is really any advantage to that. Is there? The vouchers seem like a waste of time unless you're looking to be a Legionnaire with the bonus card.

The Lunakari Mistress is a Life splinter card? Just don't want to wonder why you can't use it when you select the Death splinter

Ahh damn! I legitimately didn't notice that. Thanks for telling me before I tried to use it. Fortunately I can put it back on the market if I don't want to keep it.

No worries. Give it a whirl first. Who knows, you might start building a Life splinter deck. FYI, Life splinter is one of my favourite decks to play.

I bought a voucher from hive-engine so I could get a card back for the hell of it, but I hope they come down in price.

Editing this statement since my comment about vouchers may have been wrong. Will you need vouchers to buy packs even after the pre-sale is over? Seems like that may be the case. That sucks if so.

I just got into it myself... I will wait for chaos legion packs to be sold publicly.
Buy a lot of them and open some.

I bought cards for 10$ and I can win bronze III easily. I just can not advance without collection power and I am not going to buy a stack of 100 shit cards @ 0.20$ just to advance to bronze II.

For now, I staked some SPS and I am selling the daily voucher.

Welcome to the game as well. I've been buying a lot of PELACOR DECEIVERS to level up for fun since my DEC payouts weren't much until I got the new cards and another today. Perhaps people will start to flood Untamed and Beta cards on the market to liquidate for Chaos pack buying. That'd be pretty convenient for my card shopping needs.

Do you see any advantage of buying packs early with the voucher if it's just a few packs?

I am certainly not buying enough packs to get the title and the chance for a special airdrop card is too slim for me. I am selling the vouchers for HIVE and will then be able to buy more packs for the money once they go public.

Bronze III gives no more dec at all- and I have opened like 20 chests and got no card for it, so I just play for the challenge and wait until packs release.

Nice to hear from you. Wow. Is that primarily in SPS or from card rentals? I'm not sure of any other way to earn a good amount unless you're unefeated for weeks to mop up the DEC. Could you privately send me your account name so I can oggle? Lol.

I have no secrets, the account is just my soyrosa account :D

I hold a decent card set, so the income comes from rentals and the SPS airdrop that I stake daily to get more :-)

Are you in the Splinterlands witness protection program? I tried looking you up before and again now, and it's null. I can look anyone else up no problem.

Things are showing now. You are the golden child with all those cards? What's your secret to pulling all those?! Did you buy lots of packs back in the day or get them from rewards over the years? I had no idea that you were such a legend.

You are the golden child with all those cards?

Yes.

What's your secret to pulling all those?!

Buying Alpha when no-one knew what the game would become :D I actually spent a few hundred bucks on them and all I could with these cards was open the packs and see what I bought! Lol!

After that I played a little and collected a few more packs, but not that much, I never intensively played.

I had no idea that you were such a legend.

After all these years... You still don't know I'm a legend. So disappointed in you @steemmatt.

Personally I am waiting for the CL summoners before building my own deck. I am currently renting most of my deck for gameplay.

I guess the question to ask yourself is which aspect of Splinterlands you like more, actual gameplay or the economy surrounding the game. If gameplay is what you are after, definitely investing in cards that suit your play style is the way to go. Also, the cheap CL reward cards are actually pretty good as some of them mimic the alpha/beta versions as a fraction of the cost.

I'm about the same as you right now when it comes to what to do next. I played a bit off and on, finished up school and was surprised to see how much my collection had grown.

As of now, my plan is to rent out as many cards as I can afford while being able to hold my Silver 2 ranking for the season. I'm personally not looking into investing in packs outside of Chaos Legion and getting some singles at the moment. Kind of just waiting to see how the new game modes pan out before pulling the trigger.

I was lucky to get a boost via delegated cards from @joshman at first (who is apparently a SPL legend)

Hardly lol! But thanks for the vote of confidence :-)
