Splinterlands: Guide about attack order
Introduction
Hey all! This time I'm writing another guide about Splinterlands. In the past, I have already written a guide about dodging mechanics in Splinterlands which you can find here. When thinking about writing another guide, I am always thinking of which questions I see in the Splinterlands discord. By the way, if you aren't yet in the official discord group of Splinterlands, you can join here: https://discord.gg/ejaTPUVH
Turn Order
So let's start off with a quick recap. Normally, faster units go first, and slower units will go last. The reverse is true in reverse speed where 1 speed units go first, and the fastest will be last.
However, this also affects their chance to dodge attacks Without any abilities like flight or dodge, a unit being attacked by a range or melee unit gains a 10% chance to dodge for each point of speed faster they are than the attacker.
This also applies to reverse speed. a 1 speed unit has a 50% chance to dodge a unit with 6 speed.
This does not affect magic as they cannot miss unless the enemy has phase.
What with same speed?
The empty orb means no attack
When units have the same speed, the game's attack priority is magic > ranged > melee > no attack.
Contrary to its name however, reverse speed quite literally reverses everything, not just speed. As such, no attack units like healers go first in reverse speed while magic units attack last.
The normal attack order is alot easier to wrap your head around compared to the reverse speed version.
What about same speed and same attack style?
When both speed and attack type are the same, the next thing the game considers is rarity. Legendaries go first, commons attack last.
Once again, reverse speed decides to reverse this too. Legendaries will now attack last will commons will attack first.
I'm aware this might be confusing so I in the battle below:The Nage Fire Wizard will always attack before Caladuum.
What If speed, attack type and rarity is the same?
Good question! Your monsters' card level will be the next deciding factor for whichever monster attacks first. Needless to say, higher level monster will attack first, then followed by lower lever monsters.
Once again, when it's reverse speed this will go the other way around. This means that in reverse speed a level 1 monster will attack before a level 2 monster when all the other aspects are the same. [Addition of @simplymike]
What if everything is the same?
Good question! When that happens, RNG will decide who goes first. That's really just it. I don't have an example for this, but if you're still curious, once you go up against a water magic comp, just run your own water magic comp and let RNG take the wheel.
Recap
As you can see, the game will always check the speed, attack style, rarity, level and finally just goes by RNG.
Thanks for reading!
I hope that this guide was usefull in understanding the battle mechanics. Understanding these mechanics is very important to become a better Splinterlands player. Especially in high level battles, you will see that the players value speed a lot!
About me
I am a person who discovered the Hive community in December 2021. I was looking for a new cardgame to play and eventually earn something in. After some research I discovered Splinterlands. Splinterlands is an innovative addition to the play-to-earn games in the NFT world. Previously known as Steem Monsters, the game operates on the Hive blockchain and belongs to the trading game genre. In Splinterlands, players fight against monsters to get in-game rewards.
I decided to pay the $10 after playing some matches for free. 10 bucks for a computergame seemed fair for me. At the moment I'm trying to build out my carddeck by playing the game and participating in the community. At the moment of writing, my $10 became already worth more!

Good write up. You missed to mention one thing, though... when it's reverse speed and it comes down to the level of the monster... that's also reversed: lower level monster goes first in reverse speed. 😉
I indeed forgot to mention that one. Thanks for your feedback, I added it.
Thank you!
👍
I never understood all the turn orders so thanks for all the information.
