Hey there warrior and welcome to my entry of this week's SHARE YOUR BATTLE CHALLENGE. This week we have been asked to face tough foes abandoning a portion of our strategies and using attacks that are random and unpredictable. To help us in the task, we have been assigned the skillful Portal Spinner. Let's see how she will do in the battle ahead...

THE PORTAL SPINNER

The Portal Spinners are part of a faction of the Chaos Legion called the Cult of the Rift. These gifted warriors have the ability to bend the fabric of reality and open portals. Despite how gifted these warriors are, they have not been able to safely learn to use their portals to transport themselves between realms. Due to this hindrance, the Portal Spinners only use their portals to throw random attacks at their enemies by transporting objects and weapons through space to where they can harm their enemies. One can never predict where a portal would appear from making the attacks from Portal Spinners all the more deadly.

Let's check out the stats of this monster's card;

image.png

The Portal Spinner starts off with an attack of 2, speed of 2, health of 3 and one toughness. What really makes this monster interesting is that she comes with the Scattershot ability right off the bat and gains the Snare ability at level 5. A downside is that this monster does not gain much in protection only adding just one toughness at level 3 and maintaining that throughout. The same goes for speed which gets maxed to 3 at level 6. As for the attack, the portal spinner gains one attack at level 4 before getting a final buff at level 8. It also gains an extra health at level 2 and max at level 7.

For this battle, I will be playing with this card at level 4 which is the max for a rare in silver.

Strategy

The Reverse Speed ruleset provides a good opportunity to use Portal Spinner. Due to her low speed, she will have a higher chance of attacking first. Because of the Melee Mayhem ruleset, I'm anticipating that the enemy may use more melee monsters so I really need to protect my frontline from heavy damage.

Below is the info of my lineup👇:

BUFFSDIVINE SHIELD

I mentioned that I will need to really guard my frontline so to help me do this, I've decided to use Lorna Shine as a summoner. Her Divine Shield buff will give my monsters one more shot to stay alive and a chance to do more damage. Also, her low mana cost will be really economical for this match.

Anticipating more melee monsters, I have decided to use Chaos Knight as a tank. I really love Chaos Knight because she is a really good low mana tank with the Shield ability. This ability will allow her to take less damage from melee and even ranged attacks. She should be able to hold out for long.

In the second position is Sunkai Harvester. I personally think that this is one of the underrated life cards right now. I really like this guy because he is a good low mana melee monster with Reach.

Soul Fiend, like all the other fiends, is a card I always play if there is chance because of its 0 mana cost. My reason for placing this monster in the third position is so that if, for some reason, Chaos Knight and Sunkai Harvester are taken out, he will absorb some damage for the rest of the ream. This monster can also guar against opportunity. That is, if the enemy does not use sneak monsters.

Celestial Harpy is undoubtedly one of the best life monsters of the Chaos Legion edition. This monster's opportunity ability at 2 mana can really be a game changer in many battles. Let's hope she does well in this battle.

And no for the star of today's show. It would only make sense to put this monster at the back because of her range attack. That x2 toughness together with Lorna's divine shield makes this lady a decent backline defense.

The Battle

Round 1:

  • The summoners start with their buffs and debuffs. Lorna Shine grants all my monsters the Divine Shield ability while the enemy uses Quix The Devious to reduce my monster's speed and take away one damage from Portal Spinner.
  • Now that my monsters are slower, they can attack first.
  • Right away Portal Spinner takes our Carrion Shade.
  • Sunkai Harvester and Chaos Knight attack Djinn Chwala, x5 damage, 1 toughness remaining. The damage from Chwala's thorns are ignored thanks to the Divine Shield.
  • Celestial Harpy flies from behind and takes out the enemy's Corpse Fiend.
  • Djinn Chwala charges at Chaos Knight, x2 damage, 1 toughness remaining.
  • Corpse Fiend destroys Chwala's last toughness and is protected from the thorns by the Divine Shield.
  • Dhampir Stalker launches a x2 attack at Chaos knight but she is protected by her last toughness, 0 toughness remaining.

Round 2:

  • Portal Spinner, Sunkai Harvester, Chaos Knight and Celestial Harpy all attack Djinn Chwala with a massive damage of x9 leaving her with just 1 health.
  • The thorns from Djinn Chwala destroy Sunkai Harvester's toughness and cause Chaos Knight a damage of x1 leaving her with 4 health. The thorns don't affect Celestial Harpy because of the Divine Shield buff.
  • Soul Fiend takes it upon himself to finish up Djinn Chwala but he is killed by the thorns in the process.

Round 3:

  • Now in the first position, Dhampir Stalker stands helpless to my monsters. One by one, Portal Spinner, Sunkai Harvester and Chaos Knight each take a pound of flesh from the dark vampire until he completely desiccates.
    DEFEATED!

Victory!

As Dhampir Stalker falls, Quix The Devious vanishes into the night like the coward he is. A good battle and a good victory. The life team will not forget Soul Fiend whose sacrifice brought them victory today.

Did My Strategy Work?

Divider.png

Yes, yes and yes. My strategy to protect the front line with a shield monster worked out perfectly. I have to attribute the random shot Portal Spinner provided to take out Carrion Shade in the beginning but even if Carrion Shade attacked, he would not have been able to damage Chaos Knight.

What I consider to be very instrumental in my victory was Lorna Shine's Divine Shield that protected my monsters from Djinn Chwala's thorns multiple times. The Divine Shield made Soul Fiend a formidable attacker who ultimately took Djinn Chwala out. That's something for a 0 mana card.

Another thing that helped me in this battle was Quix himself. Reducing the speed of my monsters was a very bad idea in the reverse speed ruleset. Oh well, it worked fine for me.

Divider.png

Do I like the Portal Spinner?

Divider.png

To be honest, I really don't. I don't like the randomness of the Scattershot ability. It's really difficult to form a strategy with it because you just don't know where the attacks will hit. The ability does well against taunt but I really prefer to focus all my attacks on a taunt monster to take it out quickly. Prior to this challenge, I had used Portal Spinner just a few times. Maybe she will grow on me in the future especially if it there is an ability that provides some synergy with the scattershot.
