Splinterland Sundays!: Another Season in the Books!

The latest Season of Splinterlands just ended this past week and it continues to demonstrate the busy cycle of a player involved in the game’s busy ecosystem and economy. One of the great aspects of blockchain is that routines run smoothly as planned and if participants are not actively engaged, benefits can often be missed. Some of the excitement has calmed down since the sellout of the Beta Booster packs and the launch of the latest Kickstarter but the end of Season marks the time when the game demonstrates its true potential. From what I read, we have continues to see new records of engagement and value in the game as the amount of games played continue to increase which has paved the way for the market capitalization of the cards to surpass $4 million for the first time!

Included in these values are the coveted Reward Edition Cards which continue to be a great way for new players to not only increase their Collection for competition but to also fund future purchases. Combined with the ability to earn DEC by playing, the path towards making a game not only enjoyable but also profitable to play continues to demonstrate itself with the community. Many continue to join as seen by the diversity of names we are seeing in daily ranked matches as well as the many tournaments we play on a daily basis.

This has added well needed diversity in the low to mid levels but has come with the increased skill gap that continues to grow among players. My Collection continues to provide me the capability to compete at the highest levels of ranked play but I still believe that the time will come when skill will make a difference. My experience this Season almost confirms it as I was able to achieve as low as 12th on the leaderboards early in the Season. In fact, not until the last 48 hours did I find myself out of the Top 50. However, this season I did not get into Champions Division I until the very last day after getting within 2 points before dropping 14 out of the next 15 matches in search of completing my Daily Quest!

I have learned to do one important thing when this happens; stop playing. This is much better than yelling at the screen after my attacks miss a card for a whole match or my luck of turns gets the best of me to lose to a Furious Chicken. However, it provides some entertainment and learning each time which is why I do it everyday. The rewards continue to grow and accumulate as my DEC wallet is pretty healthy and the Collection grows as I continue to hold extra Reward Edition cards until I decide what to do with them. I am lucky not to need these but am happy to have the option to do so much with them as I continue to be encouraged with the potential of the game growing past expectations as it already has in the year players have been battling each other!

This has led me to take it very casual now as I was just happy to get some extra cards for getting into the highest division. While I saw that the points needed to get into the Top 50 was about 100, I knew they would be the hardest ones to get of the Season so I decided to focus on getting my Daily Quest done on the last day. I was pleasantly surprised to get it completed rather quickly and realized that the win streak had gotten me close to the Top 50. Therefore, I did what we should all do when winning; keep playing. I won about 8 out of the next 10 games before getting some losses that hurt so I stopped playing for the Season to save my Energy Capture Rate. While I was happy to go to bed placed 40 with five hours left in the Season, I knew it would not hold just by how active and engaged the community gets at the end of the Season.

I woke up the next morning finding myself 57th as expected and still missing out on some Untamed Booster packs until those from the Kickstarter arrives. However, it was happy to flip 150 cards to add to my Collection including another Gold Furious Chicken and enough Creeping Ooze and Exploding Dwarfs for a maxed out card! The ups and downs continue but given what the developers seem to have in the pipeline for the community, I am excited to be present every day!
