Splinterlands Sunday!: An Experimental Second Account

One of the opportunities I have missed as a whole playing Splinterlands over the last year or so has been around the Gold Foil cards. While I have been lucky enough to get two Legendary Gold Foils (unfortunately the same cards), I have not really been able to level any up. However, I was fortunate to have some line of sight and buy a missing Summoner or two to ensure I had those in order to play in some Gold Foil tournaments. These have grown in price given how additional Dark Energy Crystals (DEC) are given for games won when using Gold Foil cards in general. However, since all of my base cards are higher level than the Gold Foil, they never could be used when competing in Diamond or Champion Division ranked battles.

It felt that it was a wasted opportunity to have these cards and only really use them in tournaments. While I did have some early success in these Gold Foil tournaments, many more players started to acquire and use Gold Foil given the DEC advantages and as I learned in my weekend long experiment to play in all tournaments, I now have not placed in a Gold Foil tournament in weeks. Therefore, I felt I had two options; either sell them all or put them to use in some way. I had tried to rent them out but got very little demand even at cheap ROIs. I have yet to sell a card so that was not really an option given that they should become even more valuable in the future given their scarcity.

I decided to use one of my claimed accounts to create a new account which I called @splintergolds. Although I wasn’t sure the best approach at the time, I ultimately decided to delegate most of my Gold Foil cards to the account while only really retaining duplicates on my main account. Despite delegating, I needed to buy a Starter Pack to get it started so in all, in took a $10 investment and some time to get started. I also had to delegate some Steem Power to the account to have Resource Credits needed to play (100 SP has been more than enough so far). I actually used the gift card option to then send it via email for the $10 Starter Pack whereas I could I bought directly but it was good to see how the gifting worked at the end.

With that done, I was excited to see that most of my Gold Foils were set for about Silver Division competing! I temporarily felt like an expert on the game as I won my first 22 matches which got me well ahead in the early Divisions. At the end of the first day, I was able to get into the Silver Division which was pretty good considering I normally do awful in lower Division tournaments I enter. This experience has also let me learn the differing dynamics of playing in these leagues as many cards lose abilities that provide advantages at higher levels. For example, I felt it was very difficult to win matches with the Earth Splinter in these lower Divisions.

I battled through the end of the Season earning a couple of days of Daily Quests and some DEC to help my accounts reached maximum level of some Reward Edition Cards before they run out. Overall, I got into Gold Division II which got me 22 Reward Edition Cards for Season End! I was also pleasantly surprised that I got a Lord Arianthus for one of the Rewards which have been increasing in price due to its printing almost being over and the fact that it has become such an important card to use in general.

Considering the time and resources invested, I think the Reward Cards alone have already made it to be a profitable return. Furthermore, the amount of DEC I have been able to produce has made only a small difference at this point but adds to the return I am seeing. While I get some bonuses for using the Gold Foil Cards, being in lower Divisions does not yield me a large amount of DEC when battling on a daily basis. I have been able to get about 3,000 DEC in the first Season which is not bad although still not enough to get to use a Mystery Potion yet which is probably what I would use the DEC for in order to get some additional cards for my overall Collection.

The game continues to be an addiction for me as I continue to find ways to pour Steem into it but it has surely had a return for me and given the economics of rarity and demand of cards, I feel I have been leveraging my Collection quite well. While I did not take advantage of all the opportunities thus far, I have learned to identify some opportunities for the future evolution of the game which continues to bring excitement to the community and seemingly attract more players to join.
