I continue to enjoy playing Splinterlands as the game continues to evolve and engage a larger community within Steem. I have taken a liking to do some experiments to see how best to improve my collection and earnings within the ecosystem. A couple of weeks ago, I decided to sign up for all the tournaments during a weekend to test how well I can do and what benefits I could get from doing so. In addition, I wanted to see if my hours of playing on the ranked side have helped on improving my competitiveness in actual tournaments where many of the best players play often.

The rewards from tournaments had recently changed to provide Dark Energy Crystals (DEC) instead of Steem. While I was initially skeptical on the change, I also realized that expanding the use and ways to get DEC is a smart way to broaden the economy as well. Now that we are also able to buy cards on the market with DEC, I think the change is not really an issue. Also, Steem should really be used for powering up despite the lack in incentive to do so given recent prices. In the long term, Steem will be a scarce assets to have it only for the economies forming within the ecosystem. While some tournaments have been added for other tokens and even cards as rewards, the majority continue to be in DEC.

It was a challenge to get in to playing all the tournaments given some of the timing which is made for players around the world to be able to participate. There were a few that I could barely remember as I woke up just to play them from my mobile device. However, I can overall say did I did quite well for a weekend of effort! With a total payout of 14,900 DEC, I was able to place in 7 out of 14 tournaments. Not a bad ratio considering the amount of DEC earned. I generally did either really well or really bad as my best placement was 3rd place while my worst was 86th without winning a game often. While some only got me 300 DEC for an effort, others were quite great with up to 6,000 DEC for one tournament.

I think the major take away from the experience is that tournaments are well worth playing as there is really nothing to lose for most of us. I have also seen that my Gold Foil cards are clearly under par for most of these tournaments as most battles were against higher level teams. I recognize this as a missed opportunity to ignore accumulating gold foil cards early on as my card pack openings were not as good from a Gold Foil perspective although I did get two Legendaries. Now, it seems as it is too expensive to even consider buying some of these Gold Foil cards given their prices in the markets. I am happy that I was able to get all of the Rare Summoners at least which allow me to play in these tournaments at least.

This also leads to the other learning in that it ultimately comes down to luck of the draw when playing tournaments. If you are matched against a good player with a solid collection, you will be very challenged to place well. However, there is still a number of players that join from all levels as well. I have also seen how some players do quite well with low level teams as some of the players that play in the high ranked divisions often forget how cards lose their abilities at lower levels or how some are limited at the cards that can be used there. It happened to many a few time where my Earth team was not as strong in Silver Division matches as I have grown accustomed to.

Given my continued divided results, I continue to be in the Top 25 of players gaining rewards from tournaments which is great! I see it as an excellent way to provide a path to improving our collections while also enjoying some of the competitiveness. I often have mixed feelings as I often struggle to get winning streaks in ranked play only to find me placing well in tournaments. With the game continuing to evolve, it will be interesting to see how players continue to get great opportunities to grow and compete in these tournaments. I cannot wait to see how the tournaments will continue to expand and engage the community!

I played in my first steem monster tournament yesterday, I think you might have been there too, I wish I could say I did at least somewhat decent but nope - I got my monster butt handed to me strait out of the gate (round two cause I somehow got a by for round one)

still I hope to play in more soon. Congrats on your wins and pulling off participating in all of those battles.

It is really fun but it is really the luck of the draw as some players are so good so matter what cards you have! Nothing to lose by playing though!

No doubt, lost my second one tonight but I at least won a single battle this time 😀 it's a good place to learn though.

I wish I knew how to play, but glad I don't my competitiveness will cause me allocate too much time to this game...so I will play through others in spirit.

I've never been able to win the first match, need better cards... I've been leveling up my cards so I might be able to win some now, some low lvl tournaments, I think I'll try it... with lvl 4 summoners I can probably already win a bronze tournament don't you think?

Level 4 is a good spot to be for sure. I have lost against lower levels in some Bronze and Novice tournaments as the cards play very differently that what I am used to playing in Diamond and Champions. For example, healing is much more important in those Divisions!

I've started trying to switch to a full gold set. I won't get the legendaries as they are way too expensive but have worked on summoners and neutrals. It's been great for tournaments and extra DEC. I've seen you doing well in the tournaments so your investment is working out for you.

So far so good! Gold Foils are interesting but surely expensive at this point. With the amount of money I have put into the game, I am not sure if I can go much further but I am trying a new experiment which I will share soon!
