Splinterlands Sundays!: The Season before the Storm!
Given the slow Season I had competitively, I was not really trying to get into the Top 50 as the last couple of Seasons it has been impossible for me to breached the leaderboards despite really wanting to add to some Untamed packs given the excitement around the new cards. This Season ended on a Saturday morning for me which allowed me to get on and play a bit before the Season for a last ditch effort to gain some DEC and climb the leaderboards. I was surprised that I got a 4-5 game win streak going which lifted me to the Top 60. Therefore, I got my game on to give it my best for a Top 50 spot!
I felt that the Season helped me become more resourceful with teams as it allowed me to change some placements of cards that I did not realize helped in battle. In particular, the use of the Furious Chicken at zero Mana is quite useful as a shield from expected attacks for rulesets that use sneak or snipe attacks. While the win streaks ended there, I was able to get a couple of wins against high ranked players while also losing to them as well. The net impact was to get enough points to reach exactly 50 with about 35 minutes left. I thought that I was my own enemy at that point and decided to call it for the Season and watch the leaderboards closely. With 5 minutes left I was still 50th but one last check 3 minutes before had me at 51st. It was a decision of hoping for someone to lose or doing something about it as I was only 7 ranked points away from 50th. I decided to play a match and unfortunately was put against one of the top players and lost. While I ended up 54th, it was a fun experience that reminded me why I love the game!
The upcoming Season in progress now will definitely be a wild card for not only Top 50 placements but also Division placements as the amount of new cards will surely shift the Meta in the game and move the learning curve steeper as strategies are figured out. I can say that I have been trying the new cards out and there is so much versatility now that it is overwhelming against the Rulesets. An added consideration is that Rulesets have also shifted in terms of Mana which have also changed things up quite a bit. What to do with a 12 Mana battle or even mesmerizing, at 99 Mana battle (I thought it was a bug the first time)!
I also received most of my digital assets or rewards from the Kickstarter this past week in preparation for the Untamed release so I have been figuring out the strategy for opening and leveraging them. With 7,500 charges of Alchemy and Legendary Potions, it is key to be strategic as I am not only participating for the short term value of my Collection but the strength of it in order to continue competing in Ranked play and Tournaments which will also get interesting. While I still have Alpha, Beta and even Orb Edition cards I still need to maximize the Collection, the focus has definitely shifted to the Untamed Edition in the short term!
While I will open most of the packs for my Collection as my daughter and I love to flip cards (even in bulk), I would also like to save a bunch of packs for the future as the development team has done a great job leveraging the economy of the game within the ecosystem. The scarcity effect will only get larger as more players join and acquire more cards. This has already added value and while the Market Cap of cards has jumped mostly due to the new availability of the latest Edition, I am seeing existing cards hold their value. In fact, I have lost many games while trying to use my Untamed Edition cards against non Untamed Edition cards. While time will tell, it seems that the focus of having a balanced game is still in the developers mind which is good for all the players in the community!

I didn't invest anymore into the game as i'm tapped out so just going to stick with my medium beta deck and try to keep adding slowly to it. I opened a handful of untamed i picked up from competitions but will stay away from them for the most part. Maybe pick a few cards to try and level up higher.
With the new mana caps you are going to need some of those larger cards from the new set so hopefully you can get some good ones when you open. It's always great fun flipping cards.
Opened 2,300 and plan to leave the rest to sell or give away. The Meta has to change with the amount of cards included and the Mana changes. However, I have been using maxed out untamed and still losing to traditional teams. That is good as it makes the old cards relevant and retains value. I am sure optimal teams will include new cards though but it takes time to figure them out. Fun ahead!

It's going to take a combination of all releases to have the best decks. Strategy comes into it a lot more as well with all the extra rules, mana, and cards. It's only going to get tougher but at least you have the cards to compete at the top level. Now we just need to see if you have the skillz.
