The old way made it easy to level up through the early stages easy and quite difficult to level up later in the game. Here is a comparison for Epic Cards:

Yes, that is 105 cards saved in taking your card to the max level. You could take your card to level 7 with 105 cards.

It took WAYYYYY too many cards to get to max level before.
It's much better this way. Anyone who thinks otherwise is wrong.
