Day-725-Freewrite Tuesday Pecan

in #freewrite2 years ago

Below is my five minute #freewrite on today's prompt: pecan

If you've never written a Freewrite before, please visit today's post by @mariannewest
When I was growing up my dad was always piddling around the backyard. Most of the time he was sneaking a smoke, so mamma wouldn't catch him or pruning the pear tree. Dad loved his pear tree and he was very successful with tasty harvests yearly. Dad was always trying to grow a pecan tree, without success. I would see a limb wrapped in plastic and twine and ask him what he was doing. "It's called grafting", he would say. I asked him why he didn't just go buy a pecan tree and put it in the ground. He said they took too long to grow. He never could get that grafting thing to work, he tried it with persimmons too. Dad was a quiet little guy and when I started working at the post office with him, people couldn't believe we were related. I was blessed to be able to work with my dad for almost 8 years, before he retired. I miss my mom and dad, and think about them daily. 💕🙏

Today was the end of this Splinterlands season and I was awarded 40 cards. I picked up some cards to level up, but my favorite is the Ruler of the Sea legendary card.

I only have an apple tree in the garden

What a great photo of you and your Dad. Bitter-sweet memories.

Nice picture and memories. I don't think I have a single photograph with my father, just the two of us. Those 8 years you worked together must have been priceless.

Great memories of your Dad. I don’t think we are ever the same after our parents pass.

What a sweet picture @wonderwop. I'm sure you do miss him, I bet he was an amazing dad. Grafting trees is truly an art, trial and error for sure. I would have loved one of those pears for my applesauce this week :)

That's a beautiful photo of your dad and yourself.
The bond between father and son is precious.
We really must treasure it

Sorry your dad did not get grafting to work, my dad managed to successfully graft 2 mulberries onto one tree.

The apple tree was the bane of his life, only ever had 1 very hard apple and then it died, funny how your short write brought this memory back to mind.

My dad and I were like oil and water. He worked on farms his entire life; I was much more urban. It's great that you have such good memories!

What a lovely reminiscence!

That's a really nice story Uncle. I can see why people couldn't believe you are related.

@wonderwop - you and your dad both worked for the post office? How cool. I had a 30-year career with the post office! Too bad he never got his grafting to work, but it sounds like he enjoyed doing the experimentation.

Such sweet memories to share for a free write, @wonderwop! Nicely done, and...

A great ode to your dad here Bruni and I can see the resemblance by the lines on the faces. My mom died in a car accident in 1980 and I also often think about her.
Blessings to you my friend!

Your Dad must have been a heck of a man. Great picture. You're a lot bigger than he was. He must have had good genes.

What a beautiful photo of you and your dad! Such wonderful memories and I will bet you learned a whole lot from him!

Grafting trees is an art!

Howdy sir wonderwop! Oh that's so cool about your dad and being able to work with him, great story!

LOVE that photo!!!!

Feel free to share more (your mom and siblings too!) any time. :)
Parents like yours manifest all that is good and right in the world, and you clearly are carrying on their legacy.
Sneaking a smoke in the back yard... love that.... and planting a tree takes too long, so he tries grafting, and tries, and tries, and never gets his pecan tree. You tell us so much with so few words. You bring a character to life and get us to fall in love with him and share your loss. #NeverForget! You immortalize them with your words. If there's a heaven, there's a way for them to read your glowing tributes to them, and maybe a way to shower you with blessings as well.
Now resisting the urge to post a link to the song Eddie Fisher immortalized
Couldn't resist! O mein papa!

I can see why people had a hard time believing you are related. You eclipse him! It must have been a wonderful experience to work with your dad.

Sweet story @wonderwop.
