Incentives, Gaming and Speculation

Incentive & Stake

We are creatures driven by incentives. I hear people say 24-7 that "I am rich" , "I don't need the money", yet I see the same people posting for reward the next day and the following day and forever. People are 'quiting' hive all the time, yet they are still here, trying to earn a few dollars out of auto-votes. This post is not a rant by the way. I want to show people a few alternative ways to earn money from hive. I am hopeful, if even one person reads this and changes his/her blockchain behavior then this post would have served its purpose. In other words, I am showing you how to make cupcake and eat it too, and get away (at least a little bit) from curation driven economy. I hope most of you agree with me that it is (curation) getting a bit old.

Here is the basic thing that is said probably a million times. This is a DPOS blockchain. Delegated Proof-of-stake. Keyword = Stake. If you like to take part in governance of this blockchain, get yourself some stake. You can buy in for the market if you have the MONEY, or you can earn it slowly over several years. There is no other way. If you don't have stake, you can't take part in governance. It is as simple as that. You can shout all you want till the cows come home, but nobody is listening. It is not because we are not sesitive, it is because it is impossible to govern a DPOS blockchain without stake. I find it incredibly amusing that most people who want to take a part in governnance has less than 10K HP staked (often much less) and their account is constantly on powerdown. Every dime they earn is getting sold at the market! Mind you, there is nothing wrong with selling your earning. Do it as you please, but then don't come around and talk "governance"...too big a word if you don't have stake :)

Also just having stake still doesn't get you the ticket to governance. You must prove your worth that you are doing some community service. Also it is a slow process to gain trust. There is no magic here.

Back to incentive: If there is no governance, then what happens we know very well. We have example in Steem right next door. But lets not talk about it. Those who are in the know, already knows; and those who are NOT in the know, will never know.

Gaming

The problem with universal blog based economy is simply that not everyone is a content creator. Because its impossible, just like not everyone is a doctor, artist, or carpenter; only a few people are. Now I must say, basic 'writing' is rather easier than being a doctor, so a large number of people 'can' come up with basic writing that can be consumed. However, still there is a large number of people (who still need income) are not a writer. Therefore, they still resort to 'writing' and end up creating a boat load of what we call 'shit-post'.

However, many smart people created other things on this blockchain. Gaming is one. Splinterlands is the most popular game on this blockchain, perhaps most popular game in 'any' blockchain. Also since blockchain is public and transparent it is easy to see how much rewards a person is getting by investing on this blockchain game Splinterlands (which is just another hive investment).

Source

At current prices, I am getting $2391/day. Actually it is at least 2000 SPS or about $1000 more than that per day, as it doesn't calculate the Tribaldex Pool currently (where I also invest). This is simply because I play a game and I have significant in-game assets. But my point is two-fold:

  1. I am NOT one of the the largest investor in-game (in fact I am barely within top 100 in rich-list I think)
  2. I don't have to do anything anymore to get this $2000-$3000/day; I don't even have to play. It is completely passive. If I play, I earn extra on top of this.

This does not require me to post a blog, investigate who is upvoting or downvoting me or not. I enjoy playing this game and I have invested into something I like, and I am getting handsomely rewarded for it. I don't know about you, but I don't know of too many jobs that pays $2K-$3k/day. In many cases, people are lucky to make that much in a year. So I don't know why more people are not investing their time and money into Splinterlands, where we are demonstrating day after day, month after month; what is possible.

Speculation

The next is speculation on price and it is not an investment advice, however, this is what I am doing. As you all know by now that SPS is the BSC token for Splinterlands. This is a governance token, so it has many uses. The first use is coming up soon with the launch of Chaos Legion pre-sale. That is explained in detail here at the official post. The main point of the game economy is that to qualify for the pre-sale of the new cards of CL, one will need two things: Money and Stake (this is brilliant!). Money will buy you card packs, but you can't get it at a discount (20% max) during pre-sale, if you don't have voucher tokens. And you get voucher token based on how much SPS you have staked (airdropped daily). This is exactly the DPOS analogy. You are being rewarded based for your stake, which translate to your commitment to the project. I am commited to the project and I have staked 160,000 SPS tokens. I plan to stake 40,000 more to get to 200,000 SPS staked. I better hurry, because as I write this post SPS is almost touching 50 cents!

image.png

Above is the 12 hrs chart of SPS. That yellow line is the elusive $1 mark. Pre-sale starts on Monday, October 18th, 2021. The fundamental requirement to qualify for pre-sale, so that people can get $4 packs at $3, is buying and staking SPS. There are no other options. So at least until that point in time and during the whole month of pre-sale (pre-sale lasts a month through Wednesday, November 17th, 2021), price of SPS will likely stay high. I have already placed my bet, question is, have you?

image.png

200K SPS staked gives you $3/pack on pre-sale

Ah!!!! Did they? I should really read posts and watch the videos rather than going by snippets of what I hear here and there. I shall keep some of that precious SPS liquid then! By the time the sale comes round it might be 1 SPS per pack! :OD

3 SPS/ pack will be awesome :) that's 1 SPS = $1; not asking for much :)

I took a punt on some SPS at the announcement and I think I picked up about 2800 at under 28 cents. It is at almost 50 cents now - so, not too bad and I have a little more tucked away:)

One thing I disagree with in regard to dPoS governance is you don't need stake directly, but you have to be able to influence stake to make a difference. People should and whine and think big stake is going to listen to them - Have they lived in the real world at all? I have a bit of stake now, but that wasn't always the case, however, I think I have been able to use my influence to outsize the voice of my stake. But, it isn't easy and, it isn't done through incessant complaining.

I like that relationships matter on Hive - after all, it is a community.

Absolutely agree. So I said later..

You must prove your worth that you are doing some community service. Also it is a slow process to gain trust. There is no magic here.

There is no simple way to get magical internet money :)

I know you have earned your stake by extreme hard work over 4 years worth of time. You were here everyday, rain or shine, given us 100%. You wrote a post from hospital bed. I have saved that, and showed it to my kids to give them a role model. You are an inspiration for the rest of us.

But some are easier than others :)

You wrote a post from hospital bed. I have saved that, and showed it to my kids to give them a role model. You are an inspiration for the rest of us.

Sometimes I wonder if it is an illness to be so consistent with it, but I know that while alone in that hospital bed, writing helped far more than anything else and even months later, it has still helped me more than the doctors have been able to. Prior, it helped in many ways too - everyone should write, but without incentive, most will never start because they don't see the point.

And, I am lucky, because Hive is such an interesting place and connects with the most interesting industry to emerge in many decades. :)

Yes, some are easier than others. Actually, sometimes it is so easy that it scares the heck out of me. I ask the question, why not others are doing it? I see people toiling on their day job for hours without any prospect. They don't like the work, and knows that it is only matter of time that they will lose their job. And yet, they don't do anything about it. When I explain the details of the magical internet money, I get a blank stare, often worse. So I have stopped doing it lately.

I don't know what to make of this. Who is insane here?

I've written (and not collected data and presented) a couple of posts lately based on your theory that 'everyone should write'. They've not made much sense at times but have helped - thank you for the encouragement :)

The content you share is very good. This helps me. But I'm not good at games. I need money I'm writing and trying to make money. I have to learn a lot to play games. Thank you for sharing.

Wow, those are some impressive numbers! I thought I was kind of heavily invested in the game and I don't even come close to that. It really makes me realize just how small my account is.

Great post! I hope all is well. The digital economy is all about hustle. Whether that is research, writing, playing, etc. It's so easy to sit back and point fingers, to call people rich or lucky. I'm far from rich, but I consider myself fortunate to be a middle-aged dude getting into the digital economy in the nascent stages. Splinterlands is the perfect example of a VC bet in this space. Among the dozens of duds, you occasionally find a high flyer. I wasn't aware of that Splintercards site. I sold quite a bit of my early SPS into CAKE and BUSD, so I could both play around some with DeFI and have some cash to pay uncle sam, and boy is he going to love me next year.

How are you doing Josh! Long time no talk.

Splinterlands is my one in a thousand bet (proverb) that worked.

I try not to sell crypto for fiat for the same reason. I don't have to at this point. I pay a lot of taxes and I am willing to pay more. I think about it that I am paying taxes because I am earning. There are lots of others who are not as fortunate as I am.

No reason to sale SPS at least till November.

You have a substatial deck if I remember correctly. A Max Beta-Untamed-Dice deck, if I remember correctly. That is basically unobtainium these days! Hope you participate in CL, I am sure it will be over-subscribed.

I'm done selling for now and staking everything. Yeah, I have all the non-gold cards maxed out for all those editions. All promos with the exception of a couple (level 4 shin lo vs level 3 and level 10 dragon whelp vs level 9 are kind of pointless. I'll probably buy at least 1k packs for CL, but I mostly rely on buying individual cards.

Yeah, I will buy 2K max, which is basically what I can get with 200K staked. After CL they will change the format so will see how the dynamics will work with the new set of cards. Then comes the land....

Where I promised my kids that they can farm strawberries!! LOL

Exciting times!

Gaming is the next explode on blockchain and Splinterland has proven earlier to the leading the role . The future of SPS is more brighter and none can be to compare with . I have staked SPT ,SPS and even hold DEC .I know these are true gems and sooner or later make me rich like you..🙂

1 guy plant the seeds the life give him.

Another eats them each time he becomes seeds.

The years go by and one of the guys is rich and the other still eats every seed finds. From day to day.

About rewards for content. I would call them more community rewards. Be a part, do something that helps other people or have fun with them and optional you can get or not earn rewards.

Like interacting rewards. Write long 4k words articles doesn't mean value to me. Special if the content is copy written and can be bought on writing farms for 5$.

Quality of content = attention = reputation. The same on other social media sites.

Your SPS is much wow. Big stake. The Voucher drops made for me a strategy change, I think it should play out well too :)

Lets hope the special card will be "much wow" :D

yes, I have not sold anything I got from the hive ecosystem, I just moved it around. So that is the planting seed analogy.

Lets see how the CL plays out and then we have land coming. Exciting times!

That cupcake looks SOOOO good! Love the writeup and congrats on your tremendous success with Splinterlands! I didn't really get seriously into Splinterlands until a couple months ago and am kicking myself because I opened a profile on it back in 2019 but didn't do anything with it at the time. !PIZZA

That's pretty remarkable, @azircon, and I'm happy for you that you're doing so well :) As a writer, I sometimes make $2K-$3k/month, so that's quite amazing to make that as a daily passive income!

I'm fairly clueless about money, but might you help me learn how to invest a little in Splinterlands?
At this time, I could probably put aside around 200-250 Hive/week for a month or two to try it out and, maybe, try to transfer some more money if you think it's a good idea?

Glad to discuss this over email, if you prefer: [email protected]

Happy October of New Possibilities 😇
