Dancing Among the Reef: Coral Wraith Weekly Battle Challenge

First Impressions

At level 1 with 2 magic damage, 2 hp, and 2 speed with sneak. Hefty damage that will pierce the armor of the back position with ease and at later levels the anti-armor specialization continues with rust. Lowering armor for the entire opposing lineup. It appears to be an excellent counter for summoners that grant armor, any creature with shield, and in any moment heavy magic damage to the backline isn't expected. Being one of the highest damage magic monsters that also has sneak, it is balanced by the fact that coral wraith is more or less a slow-to-fire glass cannon.

Positioning and Strategy

In the battle that can be viewed here I used coral wraith to wreack havok with the enemy backline and also deal massive damage to living lava (an opponent with shield easily dealt with by magic damage)

Using Alaric (for increased damage) and placing a lower health unit to either side of coral wraith cushioned it from potential damage from opportunity, sneak, and/ or snipe. In this case Ice Pixie absorbed the first blow, letting coral wraith launch an attack towards the backline. Killing serpentine spy and afterwards dealing considerable damage to living lava in the front position.

As seen in the photo below, coral wraith is dealing 3 damage to living lava. If Coral Wraith utilized any other sort of damage type it would not have pierced living lavas armor, nor would it have dealt enough damage in time to remain protected by spineback turtle.

Takeaway and Conclusion

While being a very strong card, and dealing a sizeable sum of magic damage to the backline. Coral Wraith is neither quick nor survivable. It is a brutal damage dealer, and a great choice against armor buffs and the shield ability. Keep in mind when using the Coral Wraith that it is not very fast with only 2 speed, and it is not very durable with only 2 hp. Similar low cost cards with snipe, opportunity, or sneak (Serpentine Spy, Goblin Thief, Twisted Jester to name a few) may snuff out you Coral Wraith before it even draws it's first blow. Overall I would say that it is a very formidable card with many positioning possibilities. Offering unusually high sneak magic damage balanced by the card being low hp and low speed. Coral Wraith is a fine addition to any water splinter, but needs protection to really shine.
