DICE cards in ranked play - where the heck are they?

avatar

The dice mini-expansion from the Splinterlands Crypto Card Game has been around for quite a while now, featuring all-new abilities and powerful monsters. But I just never seem to run into any of them in ranked battles. Why is that so? Do people think they're weak? Are they too expensive to get from the market? While I'm not sure, I do have some theories about this.

Reason #1 - Players are lazy. Everyone is too used to their ages-old compositions. If they continue winning anyway, why even try to adapt at all? They're not being faced against these cards, so they slip their minds completely. It's not like there are major streamers or community get-togethers where influencers can show off how crucial some of these cards really are.

Reason #2 - Players don't understand getting meta cards would help them earn more. They are probably unaware of how much difference it makes when you have an advantage. A better win rate means more bang for your buck, because you only have so many matches a day before your Energy Capture Rate drops too much. If owning a card boosts your win rate by as little as 5%, that's an extra 5% boost to your Splinterlands income forever! Not to mention you can sell it later on, too.

Reason #3 - Players don't want to get cards from the player market. Maybe the 5% fee is scary to them, but I think it's mostly because everyone wants to buy packs instead. The problem is the currently much higher DEC price - at least compared to what it used to be. Despite DICE cards being moderately to highly powerful, you shouldn't buy packs when you're looking for something specific. Buying market cards for their lowest offers once in a while makes sure you don't have a lot of spare cards you're not interested in. That's a lot cheaper in the end. People forget trying to trade with others in the community Discord is also an option.

Do you disagree with anything I've said? Why? Please mention your usual ranked league to let us know more about your reasoning. I'm around silver, gold and diamond leagues.

All the above you listed is why players do not adopt to new cards quickly. Hardcore players have and we can see it in the price of cards. DICE cards have additional premium to them and more so on specific cards. When they first came out I remember all the summoners where under $1. Now Mylor Crowling is always over $1/bcx.

Yeah, but Vera Salacia on the other hand, has become the lowest priced rare summoner.

Dice cards are still quite rare at least compared to beta or untamed, which both already have a lot of leveled up cards. Low burn value (which acts as worst case scenario "insurance") makes them bit more risky, potentially scaring some people off. Plus Lands Presale will have its part in it too - a lot of players simply use DECs to buy lands instead of cards.

Players lazy to experiment is interesting unusual problem that MtG solves via rotations where you can only play cards from last few sets, but that's almost certainly not going to happen in splinterlands or at least not soon. Powercreep would force people to experiment too, but its obviously bad solution. Can't think of anything else that would solve this. Maybe just larger player base or items&spells and more interactivity that will come with it.

solves via rotations

There is some rotation already. Untamed-only tournaments! I'm sure untamed-only will rotate out when a new main edition comes along. This is actually why I've finished avoid buying untamed for some time now, since it is so much closer to ending.

True, but big emphasis on some. In order to have powerful impact rotations would need to happen in "main mode" of the game - e.g. you can't play untamed in ranked battles. I don't think this will happen anytime soon, probably never. In mentioned MtG there are formats that allow almost every card (e.g. vintage) but they are far from "main mode" of play, which would be standart, where you can play only cards from few latest editions. Might have changed, haven't played MtG for quite some time.

I agree with all the point, I'm actually one of those lazy ones who stick to their BETA cards as long as possible, though I think by the time DiCE reaches %70 of its supply, you'll see a lot of players using those decks!

I'm not sure about that! Untamed had 2 million boosters initially, while DICE had only 300k. I expected to see more of it in gold and silver league where you don't need that many BCX to make them usable, though.

I think Dice cards are ultra rare and mostly used in high leagues. The supply is so thin, you cannot even get a max level from many of the Dice cards from the market. And since DEC is so pretty high in value, buying new Dice packs is very costly. It will take a while for those cards to find their ways into more hands.

I know battering ram sees play in champion league. Do you know of any other cards also seeing play?

Mylor Crowling and Grenadier. Just look at their prices, these cards are hot.

Mylor Crowling is clearly attractive across the board, but I think Grenadier is only popular because of Arianthus. Am I wrong?

No, Grenadier is a cheap neutral damage dealer with blast on higher levels. That is a pretty decent combo.

Thanks for sharing! - @ashikstd

Well, I'm kinda agreed with all that you said.
I hope you'll run into DICE cards in ranked soon.
Let's just hope... for the good.
Keep on battling.

It is a strategic move to adopt the dice pack monsters. The newcomers in Splinterlands will play more with DICE and Untamed pack but the Beta, promo and rewards are commonly chosen by two years players like me. I hope to strength my game strategies with some Dice cards without open to many packs.
Peace

Interestingly, in the league I play, everyone is using Dice cards and I was one of the first to buy and maximize many of them that I considered most important.
