Splinterlands: My Favorite Monsters – Dungeons Denizens

avatar

Any card game worth its salt is going to need some shocking and terrifying monsters. This series is a spotlight on some of my favorite monsters SPLINTERLANDS has brought to us. Each new installment of My Favorite Monster will have a theme or focus and for this first installment we are going with Dungeon Denizens: Monsters that feel like they stepped out of D&D!

First up we have…

Goblin Thief plays his role really well. For a very low BCX cost you get a hard hitting and lost costed melee damage dealer who is effective from any position. A card this useful ends up in way more cards than you’d expect. With the Sneak ability allowing him to hit from any position Gobbo can dominate if you can get his damage buffed by even +1 or +2. I also just love the art here, the high contrast off the lantern just looks so damn cool.

But when the ground starts to shake you have much bigger problems.

Stone Golem plays just how you’d expect and, as it turns walking walls still make good tanks. With both the ability to reduce damage with its armor and through stunning enemies this Golem can be an insurmountable obstacle at low mana cap battles. Throw in a healer and some ranged DPS and you’re there. Stone Golem really ties the party together.

Sometimes classic fantasy creatures just click in a game’s ruleset and Manticore is one of those fantastic moments.

Look at that goddamn card. Every single number on it is impressive other than the speed and if it’s not the best creature with reach in the game it’s a serious contender. If your tank does go down in front of it Manticore slides to the front line. I’ve found players constantly under-value thorns and when that’s backed up by flying Manticore can make an excellent emergency blocker for only 4 mana. I likely play him in 95% of the dragon matches where he is available. S-class, staple, a reason to play dragon. Whatever you call him is likely an understatement.

But from around the corner you hear a dread sloshing and when you look up you can t help but …

SMILE! The Cube is one of my top 3 Monsters in all of Splinterlands and I really cant think of any other monster that bends rulesets to it’s will like this one. Put simply Gelatinous Cube wins games when the ruleset does damage. I’ve won dozens of games with only a damage or two on the board with cube. As the poison or earthquake does your damage for you Cube will heal itself and grow larger with each Monsters death. This includes Monsters on your side of the battlefield so make sure to use a few points to drop useless low mana creatures in any extra slots in front of or behind King Cube. It’s not unusual to see this guy hit 19 HP but I’d recommend you don’t want to start him in the front position. It’s a damn shame to see a beautiful cube like this cut down before it’s prime!

Thanks for reading! I hope you had a good time! Join us next time for something much spookier and until then I’ll see you in the SPLINTERLANDS!
