Splinterlands Share Your Battle Challenge - Furious Chicken

Furious Chicken certainly isn't the strongest monster in Splinterlands, but its one of my favorites. Furious Chicken costs zero Mana to use in a match and is a neutral monster which means it can be used as a "buffer" monster in almost any match. In this post, I'll share my strategy for using Furious Chicken, my battle lineup, and the results of the match.

The Match
One of the things I like best about Splinterlands is that no two matches are always alike, and the strategy that you choose depends upon what the ruleset for the match is and how much Mana you have to choose your monsters.

In this match, there was a 21 point Mana cap and no modifications to the standard ruleset which meant that I had to give careful consideration to the strengths and weaknesses of each monster as opposed to a 99 Mana match where my strategy is to usually just fill my lineup with as many high Mana cap monsters as possible.

The Lineup
Low Mana cap matches like this one are great for Furious Chicken as it can be used as a buffer to deflect attacks from getting to your "real" monsters. With this in mind, I put Furious Chicken in first spot with the hopes that the enemy would waste their first attack on him and that my second position monster could move into first position undamaged.

In second spot, I chose Unicorn Mustang. Unicorn Mustang has a strong attack, good speed, high health, and the "Void" ability that reduces damage from magic attacks. In my opinion, Unicorn Mustang is one of the strongest monsters available to an entry level player(maybe tied with Living Lava depending on the match rules) and was I intended him to be my primary battle monster once Furious Chicken had taken the initial damage.

As much as I like the Earth Splinter, I don't really have a good monster with the "Reach" ability. Orc Sergeant can reach, but his attack only deals one damage which means that he will waste his attacks against an opponent with the "Shield" ability. Because of this I usually put Centauri Mage in second position as it has high health, attacks with magic, and has the "Return Fire" ability which allows it to strike back at monsters that hit it with a ranged attack.

With three Mana left, I put Creeping Ooze in fourth spot. I could have played Feral Spirit for 3 Mana, but preferred to play the combination of Creeping Ooze and Khmer Princess. My thinking was that a speed advantage (given by Creeping Ooze) and magic attack ability of Khmer Princesss would be a stronger combination than playing one single monster.

In last position, I placed Khmer Princess so that she could attack from the rear of the formation.

Results
Some strange things can happen in the Splinterlands, and this match was no exception. I went into the match thinking I had a strong team, but at one point, I was down to just a single monster fighting against three of my opponent's monsters.

Thankfully, the combination of Centauri Mage's "Return Fire" ability and Mylor Crowling's "Thorns" buff meant that Centauri Mage was attacking 3X as much as normal by dealing damage when it was hit with melee and ranged attacks as well as dealing its own magic damage when it was its turn to attack.

At the end of the day, my team was able to carry the victory, but it was a tough fight.

Thoughts on Furious Chicken

In general, I like Furious Chicken, and it is one of my favorite monsters. It certainly isn't the strongest monster, or the most valuable in terms of DEC, but it gets a lot of play in my matches simply because it is so good at absorbing the enemy's attacks and not costing any Mana. Also, because it is a neutral monster, it can be used alongside any Summoner when I am looking for that key spot in my lineup to fill.

As always, its great to take part in the Share Your Battle challenges, and its even better when I get to use one of my favorite monsters.
