Best Splinterlands Season Yet - Rank 83 - Worth Investing More to Go Higher?

(Edited)

I don't usually post twice a day, especially not two Splinterlands Posts, but I feel today's achievement of Rank 83 deserves a commemoration post, especially as it may not happen again!

I haven't played much at all this season - only 151 battles - just enough to complete my daily quests and sometimes a few extras. With 101 of those battles being wins, it gives me a 66% win rate, or thereabouts.

I'm also one of only two in the top 100 with no guild.

Probably as far as I could get on a budget

I finished last night's daily quest sitting at around 4800 points and rank 107, bored of playing after 30 minutes, not really feeling like trying to push on.

I logged on this morning, knowing that it's a quiet time, to see if I could sneak up a bit higher, and it worked quite nicely - a few easy-ish battles, one with the guy who came first (I lost!) and then the three below, after which I'd decided it was time to stop:

Note that:

  • My collection is worth around $2500.
  • The two people I won against have collections worth >$3500 and >$4000. I won because of superior strategy.
  • The guy I lost against had a collection worth $18000 and he played the same strategy as me, just harder because of his superior max cards. Literally nothing I could do to win this.

I was particularly pleased with my win agains VCDragon:

Check out his maxed out cards against my punier deck!

I hate this rule set, I think I lose against this more than any other - but I managed to win this one with a combination of taunt, one other decent melee monster (with heal and thorns) and then just magic, oh and Lord A, always reliable.

Why did I stop here?

Basically I was sure I'd pushed my luck as far as I could - nearly everyone in the top 100 has better decks than I do, and there's no way the ratio of bad strategists to (good - average) strategists is 2-1 - so statistically I was looking at a long losing streak given the ratio above.

Valnamor helped

As I mentioned on my alt @revise.leo yesterday, I traded a few cards in for a Valnamor yesterday, that certainly helped with about 6 of my wins to get me up here.

Is it worth investing more?

I honestly can't see any point in struggling to get higher than rank 83 next season, there's no way I'd make T50, where you pick up 10 Untamed packs as a prize. I'm not prepared to spend the money to be competitive up there!

I know some of the accounts up there, I know most of them can play, and the vast majority have collections that are worth considerably more than mine.

I think I'd need to spend another $1000 to be consistently competitive for the top 50.

I can't be arsed with tournaments, I don't enjoy playing enough, despite the fact that I've placed in a couple of them.

Ultimately I think my role is to just stick around, do my dailies and irritate people when they lose to an unguilded lesser weighted deck with a rather silly name. That's kind of satisfying in itself, and write the odd blog challenge and investing post, which I like doing.

And of course in the long run, I need to keep in mind that earning anything from gaming, even if it's just a tiny amount of DEC and rewards cards is a bonus! Not to forget about the increasing (hopefully) future value of the cards.

All in all I'm quite happy with top 100, for a non gamer and someone with a lesser collection.

Well done man. You have some really awesome cards. You guys in the top 200 are actually monsters. A deck like yours would wallop mine easily but look at how Dragon made yours look so puny. It always feels nice to win these battles based on your strategy, I get to win a lot of those on my way to Champion 1. I never sustain my position though.

The important thing is just to get there!

You have to adjust your sites based on the value of your deck, until everything is maxed out!

Yeah, I'm working on that. I struggle with low Mana battles , so I'm focusing on upgrading monsters with 1-4 Mana cost. I also need to upgrade some of my summoners as well. It takes time but I'll get there soon.

I love your enthusiasm about this game, mine went flying out of the window some time ago. I don't find it interesting anymore, yet it is unquestionably so polished now.

The new nerfs will make me combine my 4 players into 2 unless I want Diamond play. That's if I can be arsed. It will need to change to draw me back in. Games need to evolve or go stale.

I still kid of like it, it's cute.

I am wondering about games on Hive more generally - and how popular they're going to be in the wider world - I mean they're all card games aren't they? And that verses multiplayer VR action games?

Hmmmm.....

I thought you might have been affected by those changes, I think they were mainly directed at bot accounts lower down the order though.

It fills a gap, and it gives me something easy to write about once or twice a week.

I am surprised you haven't looked at Rising Star yet. Look at my latest post about this one.

I'll have a look, isn't it just a card game though?

Yeah its a card game and as @steevc says, a crypto faucet looking at it from the worst possible angle. I know you like investing, and for me.. it's giving me daily HIVE!

Around 5 Hive a day - looking at your wallet, that's not bad for a cheeky investment.

I tend to miss out on these opportunities, but I've learnt to settle for not jumping on everything, it's better for my peace of mind!

Also, you mention development - one person, struggling to keep up

5 HIVE = 10,000 StarBits. I can pull in 50,000 a day but buy some packs with some of it. When I get my 200 HIVE back, I will buy more and pull less HIVE out.

I don't want to treat it purely as ROI, it does have some flavour. I hope to see more HIVE musicians' mug shots on cards soon. Too pull yourself in a booster pack is something a little different!

I'm glad it's working out for you - oh the other thing I should've mentioned - those games which keep you online constantly and coming back every 5 mins -

Really not for me!

I like to focus on one window at a time for a long time, what I'm doing here - flitting between comments etc. I put a firm wrap around that before I get back to my one thing at a time rule.

You'll make that Vest back in no time!

Its not for everyone, some missions take hours.. the 5 min one is the most lucrative.

The next version (beta) will have many more cards including maybe.. a @steevc one.. hehe...

I tend to be at the PC a lot anyway, so it's no big deal to click now and again. I run longer missions when doing other stuff. I'm not making as much as @slobberchops as I don't have as many 'fans'. I have been collecting the cards anyway for the fun of it.

That's a great result. I am happy enough to get to Champion 2, but that will not be possible when they change the rules next month as my cards are not worth enough. I did get a load of DEC from selling the summoner I got in the airdrop and so upgraded some cards. Need to level up my summoners some more. My pack is only worth around $200, but I am not looking to sell much more. The game is just a little daily fun.

Wow - reaching C2 with a $200 collection is some going, it's a shame you'll be penalised now!

No big deal. Maybe I can work my way up. Should see less of the bot accounts in future.
