My Splinterlands Self Challenge #24 - A Rocky End To My First Silver II

avatar

Welcome to another update on my attempt to challenge the Splinterlands ranked leagues with only the initial set of cards!… Plus, whatever I can earn or win. Since I have several cards with high card power temporarily leased out to me, putting me just over the threshold for Silver II, I decided to spend another season in Silver League farming the additional daily rewards. Per my mid-season update, things were going mostly to plan, as I accumulated Dark Energy Crystals, or DEC, and three daily rewards.

With lots of daily rewards and tournaments to cover, let's start off with the usual daily quest breakdown:

Daily Quest # 163 - Win 3 with No Neutral Monsters. For completing this daily quest, I got 27 DEC (split between 12 and 15) and a new common Earth monster card, Harvester. I also won 200 DEC from @drazeus in a Peakd giveaway & a land plot token from @stever82, also on Peakd.

Funny story, @stever82 accidentally sent me 11 plots instead of 1 - which he did live on his giveaway stream. You can see that video on Peakd here. I did send back the extra 10. But, if you play Splinterlands or have an interest in the blockchain game space, he does videos on those subjects that you might want to check out.

Daily Quest # 164 - Win 5 with Fire. For finishing this Fire quest, I got three Fire monsters! An 8th copy of the common Flame Monkey, a 3rd copy of the common Charlok Minotaur, and a 9th copy of the rare Fineas Rage.

My reward cards so far this week!

Daily Quest # 165 - Win 5 with Life. For completing this daily quest, I received 239 DEC (split between 12 and 227) and a 14th copy of the common Fire monster, Ant Miners. I also spent 2880 DEC to pick up a Dice pack from the official market, to have 1 entry in the upcoming airdrop. To explain what an airdrop is: when they sell a set number of packs, they randomly give away a new card to some people that purchased packs from that set.

Dice cards also tend to have a higher market value, as they aren't given away as season end prizes like Untamed packs. I didn't open it yet, as I was waiting to see if I got potions as daily rewards. I managed to hold out for a couple of days!

Daily Quest # 166 - Win 5 with Dragon. For completing this daily quest, I got an exciting Untamed pack, 53 DEC, and a Legendary potion!

Daily Quest # 167 - Win 5 with Death. For finishing this daily quest, I got 72 DEC (split between 12 and 60) and a Gold potion. At this point, my desire to open packs got the better of me and I spent 48 DEC on a Gold potion to open the Dice pack. Here is what I got:

Happy to see two summoners, including Brighton Bloom who I want to level up!

Daily Quest # 168 - Win 5 with Fire. For completing this daily quest, I received 2 Gold potions and a 7th copy of the common Death monster, Undead Rexx. I then dropped 172 DEC on 5 Legendary potions and 144 on 3 Gold potions to open the Untamed pack.

The contents were not that exciting compared to the Dice pack.

Daily Quest # 169 - Win 5 with Dragon. For finishing this last daily quest, I got 3 more Gold potions. Clearly I should have waited before buying them. But, in theory, I should eventually get more packs!

Before I get into the season results, there were a lot of tournaments I played in this past week. There was a real-time Bronze rules tournament with no legendary cards, a Kobold Mining Novice rules tournament, two Bronze rules tournaments with no legendary cards and only the Untamed set, a Bronze rules tournament with no legendary summoners, and a community-run Bronze rules tournament with no legendary summoners! That's a lot of tournaments, so I'll try to keep my summaries brief.

For the Monday real-time tournament, I got eliminated in the second round by the eventual winner of the tournament. I still came in 43rd place for a 100 DEC prize. I did very well in the Kobold novice tournament, finishing day two with an 18-3-1 record to come in 4th place and picking up 1,000 DEC.

In the first Untamed only Bronze tournament, I ended day two at 17-5 coming in 12th place to win 350 DEC. For the second tournament, I ended at 16-4-1 to tie for 8th place winning 412 1/2 DEC. I did less well in the official Bronze tournament, finishing 13-8 to come in 40th place winning 200 DEC.

The last tournament was a just-for-pride Bronze tournament, where the entry fee was 3 DEC and all the prizes were 3 DEC. Most tournaments have 11 rounds Day one and 9-11 Day two, based on the number of entrants. This one had two days of 12 rounds. I managed to do pretty well, with a 19-5 record coming in 4th. I was hoping to win one more to make it to third, but what can you do?

Well, yea. That or try to get expensive legendary cards I'm missing...

As the season was wrapping up, I noticed that I was actually relatively close to winning a couple of packs. In Silver League, packs go out up to 25th place, and I was in the high 60's - with only about a 200 rating point difference. A fair number of games, but reasonable to attempt at least.

Then the power went out. And, came back on for a few minutes. Then went out. Then came back on for a few minutes. Then went out and stayed out for over 14 hours. This is related to an arctic cold snap that has come across the U.S., and apparently my state's power structure not being up to handling it.

Long story short, I ended up finishing the season in 49th place. I did still get 15 season end rewards, which are a lot for someone coming from Bronze league. Unfortunately the web-site glitched, and I didn't get a good screenshot of them. But, I was able to pull the details from PeakMonsters.com.

Five Gold potions; another Untamed pack, which has a 1% chance of coming up; 3 Legendary potions; 115 DEC; Nightmare, a new Death common card; and a 16th copy of the Water common card, Wave Runner. Fifteen was enough to combine them for a level 3 card, which I had missed doing previously. I spent 39 on one more Legendary potion to open the pack, hoping it would be better than the previous reward one.

Not great, but at least the rare is a Summoner in this one!

I did get enough copies of Mantoid to level it up to 2, as well as Elven Defender. I've apparently been bad at tracking some of my common cards of late, so I'm going to try to go through and combine some more of those. The upgrades are mostly small, typically +1 health, but that can matter in some matches.

Since a number of delegations should be ending mid-season, I'm thinking that for the upcoming one I will take another swing at the Bronze top 10. It is only one more pack than placing in the 25th spot for Silver, but feels a bit more in reach. My current card power of 40,605 is going to drop by a few thousand when that delegation ends. I do still have about 4,000 DEC left over to blow on cards to try to improve my deck!

This past season was a lot fewer games than in some of my past Bronze seasons.

If you made it this far, thank you for reading! If you have any questions, feedback, or suggestions on future updates then please let me know in the comments below! This upcoming season is a short one, with only 12 days, so I may post an update sooner than the usual week!
