Tournament Success in Splinterlands

What to Expect

I've been hitting the beginner level tournaments pretty hard lately and here is what I've learned. I'm not that good. My best was is 3rd I think. It's hard to remember, they all blur together. Now tournaments are evolving all the time so what I am going to go over today is really just a snapshot of my experience. There are 3 tournaments that I regularly enter.

Untamed Kobold Mining Expedition

10 DEC to Enter | $42 USD in Prizes

  • This event has novice League level caps for Summoners and Monsters.
  • No Legendary Cards may be used.
  • Only Untamed Edition may be used.

I really stink at this tournament. It forces me to rely on my skill and not my cards. If you are winning all your Bronze season wins cause someone gifted you a Scarred Llama or a Yodin Zaku this tournament won't let you bring those into the mix.

To win this tourney you pretty much have to go undefeated and have a full base set of Commons, Rares and Epics of the Untamed Edition. A full set isn't required but it sure as hell doesn't hurt.

Also, make sure that every card in your lineup is active. If you have cards that aren't doing anything your gonna have a bad time.

Cardauctionz Bronze Open

FREE to Enter | $2 USD in Prizes

  • This event has bronze League level caps for Summoners and Monsters.
  • All Cards Playable may be used.

This tournament is a blast. The entry fee changes depending on your power/ranking. The payouts are low but that's because they are designed for beginners. Having all cards available and capped to Bronze keeps things interesting. If you've got some good Legendaries you can compete in this league. In fact my most recent video below features this tournament.

Because you can use Legendaries you can bully folks that aren't playing on the same power level as you. But don't get cocky. You will likely run into someone with the same power level eventually. Make sure you look at your opponents recent battles to get an idea of what you are up against. Be more strategic and deliberate with your picks when you know your up against stiff competition.

Bronze Blunderbuss

10 DEC to Enter | $27 USD in Prizes

  • This event has bronze League level caps for Summoners and Monsters.
  • No Legendary Cards may be used.

This tournament is a lot like the Kobold Mining but you have a bit more freedom with your card pool. I like that it brings in some cards that are staples in my builds. Water cards like The Kraken, Sea Monster Pirate Archer are now in the mix. The card pool is much deeper in this tournament. Make sure that you are not getting tunnel vision and assuming that everyone is going to go with the same basic builds that you see over in Kobold Mining.

How to Prepare

Watch and learn from others. I wasn't doing great in the Kobold Mining Expedition tournaments so I decided to start watching matches that were from the winning teams. This is a great way to learn what cards might be missing from your collection.

Here is a video of my tournament from earlier. I can tell you I did place in the money. You'll have to watch to see how much I won. Comment with the amount below and I'll match it and send it over. Happy hunting.

Just curious, how much did you spent on DCity to get to where you were happy with your income rate? I've got a few bucks in Hive from posting and was debating picking up some cards... but, also debating holding it for some of the upcoming games that are supposed to get added this year (decisions and being cheap! lol)

$200 has me getting 2500 SIM and .3 Hive a day.

After 30 days of having a SIM balance above 8000 I should start getting more daily HIVE.

Good tips.
I sucked at tournaments when I first started playing them. Mainly because I was so used to playing for my daily quest that I had a hard time deciding what the best splinter for the job would be. With a lot of practice I got better at them. (Then, when Untamed came out, I started sucking again, lol... so many cards to choose from 🤣)
