Opportunity Ability: Battle Strategy and Considerations

Hello friends,
the protagonist of this post is not a card but an ability: Opportunity.

Opportunity

Image.png

Cards that have this particular ability attack the weakest opponent card: the card that has the least amount of life.

Cards that have the Opportunity ability

Image.png

Fiendish Harpy and Screeching Vulture

Fiendish Harpy is a card from the Promo collection, is a Epic card and is a card of the Dragon element.

It is the card with the Opportunity ability that costs more because it acquires the ability only when it reaches the fourth level (combination of 11 level 1 cards).
Level 1 Fiendish Harpy costs $ 2.87

Image.png

Image.png

It is a very useful card especially because it has a really low mana cost (2) but it is also very expensive.
If we consider the cost / benefit ratio it loses abundantly the comparison with another card that has the Opportunity ability: Screeching Vulture

Image.png

Screeching Vulture has a slightly higher mana cost (3 vs 2) but is much cheaper and when it reaches level 6 it also has a very useful extra skill: Scavenger.

The big difference in price is related exclusively to the rarity of the two cards.

Screeching Vulture: 65594 cards in circulation.
Fiendish Harpy: 2863 cards in circulation.

Dragon Jumper

Image.png

  • Has a medium-high mana cost (7)
  • Has 3 attack points (Melee Attack)
  • Has 6 life and has no armor points.
  • Has a high speed (5)
  • Has two skills (Level 1): Opportunity and Flying

This is a really interesting card and it is a card that I will definitely buy.
With the right summoner (for example Daria Dragonscale) it becomes very strong.

Cost, Levels and Evaluations

It is a fairly expensive card.

Its cost is 5.00$

Image.png

In the following image you can see all the levels you can take Dragon Jumper:

Image.png

  • It is a strong card already from level 1.
If used in combination with the right cards it can become decisive for winning a battalgia.
For example if we use Dragon Jumper together with Daria Dragonscale and Brownie (Level 4) his attack increases by two units (3 -> 5)

Image.png

Cave Slug, Feasting Seaweed and Serpentine Spy

Image.png

I have grouped Cave Slug, Feasting Seaweed and Serpentine Spy together because they have one thing in common: they have an excellent attack (2) already from level 1.

In the following image you can see their unit cost.

Image.png

In the following image you can see the levels in which the three cards increase their attack by one unit and the corresponding cost.

Image.png

Maggots and Parasitic Growth

Image.png

I have both cards but I use them little because they have a low attack (only one point) and a low speed (only one point).

When I use cards with the Opportunity skill

The fighting rules are very important.

If you want to win a battle on Splinterlands you must always pay close attention to the rules of combat.

Fighting Rule favoring the use of cards with the Opportunity ability

Little League

Image.png

According to this combat rule, the only monsters you can deploy in battle are those that have a mana cost less than or equal to 4.

Image.png

It is the most favorable combat rule for using cards with the opportunity skill for a simple and obvious reason: most cards that have the opportunity skill have a mana cost of 4 or less.
In fact, only Dragon Jumper and Cave Slug have a mana cost greater than 4.

1 copy.jpg

The card with the Opportunity ability that I chose to use in the battle of this post is: Screeching Vulture (Level 6).

A battle of mine with Screeching Vulture

In general, I always choose a balanced battle for the Share your Battle contest.

In this case, I wanted to choose a battle that would highlight the importance of an opportunity skill card like Screeching Vulture when the battle rule is Little League.

Image.png

If you want to see the battle you can do it from this link: https://steemmonsters.com?p=battle&id=b4da4b06e497725d0ddf0f1e781958bfb9049c70&ref=libertycrypto27

In the battle of this post I had the following conditions to respect:

Image.png

Initial Statistics

Image.png

If we don't consider the skills of the summoners and the cards, the battle initially seems to be in balance:

  • I have two points of attack more than my opponent.
  • My opponent has three life more than me.

Actually my advantage is very big because thanks to Daria Dragonscale and Brownie (Level 4) my attack increases considerably.

Image.png

As you can see from the data in the following table my attack goes from a total of 9 to a total of 19 and in practice the total doubles.

Image.png

With a difference in attack of 12 points compared to my opponent, the outcome of the battle is a foregone conclusion and can only end with my victory.

Image.png

My battle formation

As you well know, the maximum number of deployable cards is 7 (1 summoner + 6 monsters).

I chose to deploy (in order of position):

Goblin Thief - Manticore - Goblin Thief - Wood Nymph - Brownie - Screeching Vulture -Furious Chicken

Daria Dragonscale (Summoner)

First position

Image.png

I put Goblin Thief (Gold - Level 3) in first position.

  • Has a low mana cost (4).
  • has 4 attack points (Meele Attack)
  • Has 5 life
  • Has a high speed (4)
    Has the Sneak ability:

Image.png

Thanks to this ability, attack the monster in last position instead of the monster in first position.
In the battle of this post it loses his ability because he is deployed in first position.

Thanks to Daria Dragonscale and Brownie's ability Goblin Thief doubles her attack (2 -> 4).

Second position

Image.png

In second position I put Manticore (Level 4)

A card that I often use in second position.

  • Has a really low mana cost (4)
  • He has 8 life points which are many for a card that costs only 4 mana.
  • Has an average speed (3) which in this battle becomes 4 thanks to Brownie.
  • When he reaches level 4 he acquires a total of three skills: Fly, Reach and Thorns

Image.png

Thanks to the Flying ability, Manticore is more likely to avoid melee and ranged attacks.

Image.png

Thanks to the ability Reach Manticore can attack from the second position instead of only the first.

Image.png

Thanks to this ability, every time he suffers a melee attack he can attack the card from which he suffered the attack and subtract two life points.

Third position

Image.png

In third position I deployed Wood Nymph (Level 6).

An always useful card especially when the battle rule is Little League.
I chose to deploy it because it can increase the life of my cards by 1 unit (ability Strenght) and will heal the card in first position.

Fourth position

Image.png

In Fourth position I deployed Brownie (Level 4).

Level 4 Brownie has two abilities.
The Swiftness ability increases its and friend cards speed by one point.
Thanks to the ability Inspired increases the attack of friendly cards by one point.
A truly precious card that I recently upgraded.

Fifth position

Image.png

In fifth position I deployed Screeching Vulture (Level 6).

Level 6 Screeching Vulture has three abilities.
The Opportunity ability allows it to direct attacks towards the weaker opponent's card.
Thanks to the Scavenger ability, it increases its life by one unit each time a card (both opponent and friend) is eliminated.
Thanks to the Flying ability increases the chance of avoiding ranged and melee attacks.

Sixth position

Image.png

In sixth position I deployed Furious Chicken (Level 3).

Since it has a zero mana cost, it is an always useful card that I deploy very often.
I often place it in the last position.

Summoner

Image.png

The summoner I chose is Daria Dragonscale - Level 4.

It is now the summoner I use most because it is the only summoner that allows me to summon level 7 community cards, level 5 rare cards, level 4 epic cards and level 3 legendary cards.

I wrote an in-depth post on Daria Dragonscale: https://peakd.com/hive-140217/@libertycrypto27/daria-dragonscale-vs-malric-inferno-considerations

Thanks to his ability all my melee attack cards get one more attack point.

Conclusion

Cards with the opportunity ability are very useful and, as I showed you in the battle I shared, they are most useful in particular circumstances such as the Little League battle rule.

To make the most of the cards with the opportunity skill, it can be useful to look at the cards that the opponent sets up most frequently.
You can do this by taking a quick look at the following screen that precedes the choice of cards to send in battle:

Noname copia.jpg

If your opponent frequently sets cards with few life points, using cards with the opportunity skill can be very important.

The only battle rule that cancels only the Opportunity ability is the Equalizer battle rule.

Cards are important but battle rules and the use of your card abilities in relation to battle rules are even more important.

Abilità Opportunità: Strategia di Battaglia e Considerazioni.

Ciao amici,

image.png

Fiendish Harpy e Screeching Vulture

Screeching Vulture: 65594 carte in circolazione.
Fiendish Harpy: 2863 carte in circolazione.

Dragon Jumper

image.png

image.png

Cave Slug, Feasting Seaweed e Serpentine Spy

image.png

Little League

immagine.png

image.png

Goblin Thief - Manticore - Goblin Thief - Wood Nymph - Brownie - Screeching Vulture -Furious Chicken

Daria Dragonscale (Evocatore)

Prima posizione

image.png

Ho messo Goblin Thief (Gold - Livello 3) in prima posizione.

  • Ha un costo in mana basso (4).
  • ha 4 punti di attacco (Meele Attack)
  • Ha 5 punti vita
  • Ha una velocità alta (4)
    Ha l'abilità Sneak:

image.png

Seconda posizione

image.png

In seconda posizione ho messo Manticore (Livello 4)

Terza posizione

image.png

In terza posizione ho schierato Wood Nymph (Livello 6).

Quarta posizione

image.png

In quinta posizione ho schierato Brownie (Livello 4).

Quinta posizione

image.png

In quinta posizione ho schierato Screeching Vulture (Livello 6).

Sesta posizione

image.png

In sesta posizione ho schierato Furious Chicken (Livello 3).

Evocatore

image.png
