Buying Dice packs is good value for money
Ever since DEC had that nice pump that has gotten it to the 1k DEC=$1 range, buying packs, particularly untamed packs, has seemed a bit pointless. I mean, what's the point in buying a 2k DEC pack and then add potions for a bunch of cards that will be worth $0.5 at the end of the day?
It turned out to be more profitable to just buy the untamed monsters that you need to build your deck, rather than worry about the randomness of the draw from opening packs. Also, untamed packs are given as rewards, so you can just wait until the SPlinterlands gods bless you with one.
However, with Dice, it is a tad bit different. Compared to untamed monsters, Dice cards are scarce and usually have special abilities that make them sparkle in your deck. Due to this, their prices are relatively higher than their untamed counterparts, thus making them better value for money in terms of packs.
Yesterday, I decided to buy a few dice packs to test the theory and it turned out to be productive. When evaluating the money I spent, you have to disregard the potions used for opening the packs because they have been accumulated for free from completing quests and season rewards.
So, I opened a total of 9 packs at 2910DEC( but lets read it as 3k DEC). Lets also assume 3k DEC is $3(which it's not) while running the calculation. So that is $27(27K DEC) spent on packs. So how much came back? I'll be using the market value of cards inside, rather than the listed value that tends to be higher
- 1st Pack Value: $4.31
- 2nd Pack Value: $5.50
- 3rd Pack Value: $0.84
- 4th Pack Value: $1.44
- 5th Pack Value: $9.77
- 6th Pack Value: $0.96
- 7th Pack Value: $4.61
- 8th Pack Value: $1.48
- 9th Pack Value: $1.02
- Total Value: $29.93
So that's $2.93 profit if the cards are sold at their current prices. Now bear in mind that 27K DEC is actually like $20 and dice card value tends to rise, so the profit could potentially rise to $8 from this venture.
Bear in mind that I didn't spend any money on potions because they've been accumulated from many weeks of battling. However, assuming I bought 10 potions each(5 Legendary and 5 Alchemy), I would have spent an extra 4050 DEC and would still be in tiny profit after the venture.
The moral of the story is that buying Dice packs is a far better option than buying untamed packs, and despite being random, it is generally more profitable, due to the market value of Dice cards in general.

Interesting analysis I haven't done too much of that but I do enjoy a game of Splinterlands now and then.
Yes if you complete daily quests, then you must have accumulated lots of potions. If you buy enough packs and open, you're sure to find gems in there and also boost your collection power in the process
