Is Splinterlands a good investment? / Czy Splinterlands to dobra inwestycja? [EN/PL]

I remember the beginnings of the Splinterlands game very well. I watched from the sidelines how the life of this game would unfold and I didn't expect such a huge success. Today, Splinterlands is the most popular game on the Hive blockchain. You can easily check this by browsing the current transactions on the blockchain. A great majority of them come from Splinterlands, here someone starts a game and a while before that someone just searches for an opponent. However, I would like to focus on something else today. Can a Splinterlands game be treated as an investment? I will try to answer this question in this article.

Splinterlands announced its release on Kickstarter in 2018. More than $80,000 was raised to support the project, which resulted in a bang-up launch of the game when it was still called Steem Monsters. Players could support the project with contributions ranging from $25 to as much as several thousand. In return, they received rewards in the form of a Steem account, a welcome package, packs with cards (so-called Booster Packs) and limited cards or joining an exclusive group on the Discord server. That's what the rewards were, whoever wanted to support a certain amount received something in return. Now, in retrospect, it seems that these are a kind of collector's items, having a high value for the owners. And it is true, the start of the project is only once and whoever benefited now has something unique.

But what about those who have now joined the Splinterlands community and game? What about those who have been playing for a month, a week, two days? Is there hope to earn money for them too? Sure there is.
Let me justify these beautiful reflections with a simplified system of gaining anything in Splinterlands.
Winning ranked games earns us the in-game currency, Dark Energy Crystals, as well as rewards for completing daily missions and gratification for ranking during the season. From these packs (for missions and the season) we can get the previously mentioned crystals, potions and playing cards. The latter are especially worth mentioning because their prices range from cents to tens or hundreds of dollars. I remember getting a Fire Summoner worth 30 dollars, such a gift at the end of the day.

Sometimes in movies and theaters there is a turning point. I'm going to do that too. I'm actually approaching the subject of Splinterlands as an "investment" from the other, somewhat niche, side. I hope you don't feel cheated. I agree, there is money to be made and quite a bit of it in this card game. But I see more than money in these cards. I see in them great fun and time well spent. No card game has ever drawn me in as much as Splinterlands. I really like the way the developers have approached their project. If you want to play this game without worrying about your position in the ranking, you can choose the "Practice" mode. It doesn't influence our ranking and in this mode we can practice our tactics and test the limits of our cards.

You could say that Splinterlands is a pay-to-win game. In a way I would agree with that, but not a hundred percent. Since I discovered the possibility of renting cards temporarily, my ranking has risen dramatically and I've jumped to the next division. Did the merit of super cards help me with this? Undoubtedly. Nevertheless, I played for a long time without even being aware of such a mechanism and also won clashes with cards that I used to occasionally buy for a small amount or won just in these daily missions.

Going back to the question posed in the headline and concluding my thoughts. Is Splinterlands a good investment? It depends on what "investment" means to you. If you're looking for gigantic incomes by entering the so-called freshman to the game and you haven't won the lottery, I don't bode well for you. But if, like me, you treat Splinterlands as an investment in time well spent, nice fun with friends and occasional grants then I guarantee you that your efforts and contribution have not been in vain.

Thank you very much, until the next one.

Czasami w filmach i sztuce następuje w połowie zwrot akcji.

Wracając do pytania postawionego w nagłówku i kończąc moje rozważania.

Yes at the base of everything there is a game that is well built, with nice graphics and especially good playability.
After 17 months I still enjoy playing Splinterlands and I think that's its real strength.
Good post and considerations @nervi

Thank you for your kind words. It is gigantic fun for me too. It's a shame I took a break from Splinterlands because I would have played it non-stop since the beginning haha.
