Hive Success: 10 Splinterlands

The formula is being written, we just need to follow it.

One thing about the recent success of @splinterlands is that we are seeing the model that is required to take Hive to greater levels. This is no surprise to many since it was what they thought all along.

Layer 2 is where the attraction resides. It is what people sign up for. This is where we find the applications that appeal to different individuals. When looking to grow, this is where the focus should be.

Splinterlands did a terrific job starting to tap into the increased interest in blockchain gaming. The #Play2Earn concept is starting to take hold. This is the core of Web 3.0, a step towards the Metaverse.

The key is positioning Hive at the center of this.

Increasing Users

One of the goals, naturally, is to increase the number of users. When there are more people with Hive accounts, the greater the chance of some understanding all that is offered.

This is a characteristic that is valuable to the ecosystem. As one signs on through an application, that person is able to use anything else on here with that same account.

By now, most have seen the chart that @pablopenguin puts out each day. It is being sent around Twitter, showing the impact of Splinterland's recent success on Hive accounts.

image.png

That is quite an increase from the norm that was in place just a week ago. We can see that signups are higher by a multiple of 5 or 6 compared from where it was before.

We can also see an impact upon the activity on Hive. According to Blocktivity, Hive is now number 7 in the rankings of most active chains. More importantly, the volume is up to 2.9 million transactions in a 24 hour period. This reflects what is in reports put out by @dalz and others.

hive transactions.png

Of course, the validity of a lot of the transactions for a number of the chains is questioned. There were often accusations that a great deal of the volume is generated by gambling bots and things of that nature. We know from the constant study of what is taking place on here that the traffic numbers are due to more activity from Splinterlands.

We can also see this by the issues it caused. Blocktrades put out the weekly update on it's software work explaining this problem along with what was done to solve it.

Yesterday we started getting some reports of timeouts on transactions processed via api.hive.blog. The immediate suspicion, of course, was that this was due to the increased traffic coming from splinterlands servers, which turned out to be the case.

This is all feeding into the entire ecosystem moving forward. Scaling up is essential and "testing" the system out with real traffic is what does it. We believe the optimization work done over the past year and a half allows for great volume on Hive. However, we never know the smaller mishaps that are going to arise until that traffic exists.

As the article linked details, the problem arose and it was a rather simple solution.

10x Splinterlands

Hive has a nice foundation forming. There are a number of projects that are in varying stages of development. The biggest challenge being faced is that it takes time. Coding cannot be rushed. In fact, for a number of reasons, it often takes longer than anticipated. Unexpected problems always seem to arise in that area.

Nevertheless, Hive's path is fairly clear. Splinterlands paved the way, showing everyone what is possible. Now we simply need to develop "10 Splinterlands" on Hive.

While we can expect that game to keep growing, it is important for other tribes, games, and applications to step up their progress. We can now see some of the potential from an overall growth standpoint.

For instance, what would the new account chart look like if we have 5 applications breaking through just like Splinterlands? We could 3-5x the numbers that are on the chart.

The forward progress is more layer 2 applications feeding into Hive. What Splinterlands was able to accomplish came as the result of years of coding, getting feedback from players, slowly growing the user base, and starting to reach outside the ecosystem.

It isn't sexy nor is it an overnight process. Many of the games and applications on Hive are going through the same long-term coding process. Splinterlands is arriving at this time due to the fact it got an earlier start as compared to some others.

We have a nice foundation of applications already operating with more in the works. Many are excited about the potential of the SpkNetwork by the @threespeak team and what can result there. Others are starting to branch out and interest a few people outside of the Hive ecosystem.

That is the power of a decentralized system. We are going in many different directions at the same time. This might make the process a bit longer since there is no cohesive message. However, the tapping into different markets is expanded which has the potential for even greater growth over the long-term.

After all, it was not too long ago the discussion was marketing Hive as a blogging platform. As we can see from the different development taking place, we are far from that. In fact, the lesson here is that a game was the first breakthrough we had. This means that we simply do not know what will click with people. Heck the next one might be the cannabis community. We simply cannot tell.

It is a scratching and clawing time. Very little is coming easy. There is a lot of work required to move the proverbial needle a short distance. Nevertheless, we know what is possible and will keep at it.

Over time, we will develop 10 Splinterlands, all feed traffic into Hive.

The gamers are a smart community and it makes sense they will understand the benefits of Hive

You are correct. Gamers tend to be very advanced in their understanding of new technologies. Also, what is offered on Hive really is nothing new to them. They dealt with tokens for years, just locked into the game.

Now they can extend beyond the game.

However, the tapping into different markets is expanded which has the potential for even greater growth over the long-term.

I agree. Attracting varying interests through diversification is the key to growth here. By just looking what Splinterlands has done in a mere couple of days is an amazing tell for what the future could bring to Hive.

What is to say we cant see the same thing in DeFi, finance, photography, or the weed community?

We have no idea where something will click.

Absolutely. With the way things are changing, who's to say what the ;next big thing' might be!

Right now though it looks like the best growth prospect is with gaming - but who knows what tomorrow might bring?

If I had to target an area, I would go with gaming also. It lines up very well. Those individuals are accustomed to using tokens and having in-game assets.

That aligns beautifully with with what we are doing with blockchain. The difference is that people actually have something of value outside the game.

Yes, it is a match made in heaven - today. We need to seize upon it now though because who knows which way the wind will blow tomorrow and gaming may be replaced by that next best thing.

With the speed innovation is occurring in blockchain technology, the sky is the limit. So when you need to act you shouldn't wait - tomorrow may be too late!

We're getting to see the impact of having relevent applications built on the chain, hopefully these Splinterland based accounts will explore the other aspects of hive. Way to go Splinterlands, wow.

I would say there will be a very small percentage. It is a numbers game. Most will sign up for an account and wont even play the game.

But the more that sign up, the more that comes out the other end.

This is true and shows in my affiliate referrals. Most play a few games and don't buy the initial spellbook, others do buy the spellbook but stop after 20-30 games.

Onboarding is really important and I wasn't sold straight away when I started. The game is that much more interesting after the first levels/leagues. But it's hard for beginners especially when lacking experience in similar games. It's also quite costly to start now..

That being said the Splinterlands team does a great job of running social media challenges where upvotes can be won for posting about the game, converting players to become involved with hive and helping them earn some hive in return. I think a good portion will be drawn to these types of challenges as it helps to build their decks that way

But the more that sign up, the more that comes out the other end.

Well I guess it's a number's game, the more signups the more chances we can see a chance for these to work for hive.

It was absolutely fantastic and great to see a Hive Block chain asset hit the trending news for a change. Everyone should be proud not just devs but players also for making it what it is.

It is good but it is just the start. Now is the time to work doubly hard at what we do. Strike when things are hot and exciting.

Most of them don't know anything about Hive yet, wait for them to explore a bit and find out that they can also make money posting, they will freak out, I've told to some newbies and they were amazed.

That is why having a lot more applications available is vital. Too bad #projectblank isnt out yet. That said, we do have things to offer so it is going to be fun to watch.

Hopefully some become very committed Hivians.

I’m so happy to see all what’s happening now, how it’s all coming together, it’s been 3 years coming...apparently almost everything I’ve said all along is coming together nicely. Look out for my next post

YOU CLICKED TWICE! Not bad, i managed to post one answer 4 times as hive was not loading it up. We need bigger servers also, and more witnesses. My opinion. !PIZZA

I have joined an Unofficial Splinterlands Facebook Group and the member there are mostly in their teens. And you know what, we have a saying that the young ones are the future. As of the moment, they are already onboarding their peers and family members on Hive through Hive Signer. Imagine when these teens grow up to become professionals and leaders in the future? It is looking great for Hive.

Imagine when these teens grow up to become professionals and leaders in the future?

They might not have to. Get an early enough start and they will have the financial resources simply from gaming. That will be their profession. That is the future of the Metaverse.

I am glad to read that we are getting a lot of new people signing up from Facebook there. Word of Mouth is the best form of advertising.

We will have to watch the numbers to see if they keep increasing over the next couple weeks.

Splinterlands will attract a lot of people who will also see the benefits of hive, and will stay for all that hive has to offer.

There will be a percentage that reside in the game and never branch beyond there while others will.

Either way, getting more people signed up with a Hive account can only enhance the future.

Airdrops are a wonderful strategy to deploy. Who doesn’t love free money? The Splinterlands team has done a fantastic job bridging everything together. My user experience has been pretty flawless.

Can't depend on single points of success in a decentralized world. The fact accounts/userbase is shared and connected across a broad range of products within a social setting on top of that is what gives this Hive project in its entirety tremendous value; provided those roads are kept clear and maintained.

Hype in crypto wears off pretty fast. Stay on course. Don't get too far ahead of yourselves.

Without a doubt. Still very early in the game and nobody can rest on their laurels.

Have to keep developing, expanding and growing. Simply business practices. Without a growing user base, all is for naught.

@splinterlands is making great strides but there is a lot work ahead for them. In the meantime, we all can help out by promoting the game where we can.

New players means a portion will find their way to other applications.

Did you see how many views that PeakD post received? When on Splinterlands, you click for more info about the airdrop. Thousands visited that post. I'd say very few of them understood even the simple act of asking a question in the comments could have earned them a bit of crypto. That's a bit of a missed opportunity. You'll notice you don't see a sudden influx of low rep noob accounts engaging. Sure, Hive products can allow for their consumers to stumble into various other avenues to explore; or make those roads clear and maintain them then notice the difference almost immediately. The consumer cycle is like a whirlwind. Several open doors leading into the core spreads them all over the place.

Sort of off topic, I know SPT is earned from blogging about splinterlands but does staking it on hive-engine actually do anything?

You can earn SPT from curating content and the SPS airdrop is giving you points for having the SPT tokens.

Thanks, I understand where and how I'm just not sure if staking SPT does anything? Are you rewarded for staking SPT?

No real rewards besides curation and maybe some extra SPS tokens. I have some SPT delegated out but I don't think its counting towards my points though.

Way to go, Splinterlands!

Having somewhat "watched" the trajectory of MTG since its inception 25+ years ago, when Spliterlands (as "Steemmonsters") first appeared, I could totally see it as the use case that would have the potential to pull the entire ecosystem forwards... it was the first dapp to recruit "externally" without pitching Hive... and it was a use case that was about gaming not about "post to earn."

And yet? It was also the first (and I believe to this day ONLY) way to buy into Hive (even if indirectly) with fiat and a debit card or PayPal. MASSIVE potential.

2nd layer is definitely where it's at. As you have seen me say before: People don't go "on Facebook" anymore, they join and do specific things on Facebook. As such, our tribes/communities can be part of the path forward... as can "real world" use cases that just happen to be on the Hive blockchain.

=^..^=

It's all great.
We need to look at other side as well. We need UI/UX, Tutorials and now prepare well with customer support before launching anything. I have been helping the splinterlands discord 3 days in a row, and there is just flood of people, questions, etc. Splinterlands was out of account creation token at some point, idk what fix have been applied, but everynew user still have their account stuck. A tons of emails back logged, creating accounts manually for them and fixing.

We need RC delegations now, more than ever. So We need to align our things together, and make hive better a smart contract compatible blockchain, because that's the suture.
I saw people asking, why I need keys when I can log in with metamask, a few understands but other's don't as BSC bridge was broken already and I was directing them to hive engine or tribaldex to trade their tokens. 4/5 keys they get, holy shit. everything has one key for them. and a backup password.

So What wee need to do is ease up-onboarding more and more. time is here we just need to catch up with it.

It's been great commenting on hive after 3 days lol. :D Enjoy

We need more applications like Splinterlands. I joined HIVE through Splinterlands and since I paid for the spellbook, it helped me create an account for me (after letting me put down the recovery keys).

Splinterlands created a second layer for themselves through Hive Engine. Right now we have no second layer that is tied into the base chain in a decentralized manner. 3speak is working on something, we will see how it goes.

The point is that our devs, finally, after half a decade need to release SMTs and community tokenization.
This isnt Hive success what happened to Splinterlands. Its @aggroed and @yabapmatt success. Success in spite of inaction and slow development during the last 5 years.. We just benefit from it.
