Blockchain Gaming, Finance, and Capital Appreciation (PROFITS!!) Part 2

First things first... I just found this!

https://venturebeat.com/2018/01/29/playchemy-unveils-blockchain-enabled-immortal-player-characters/

I've briefly looked into this enough to see I need to look farther. I don't know anything about the company, yet, but it isn't important for this discussion. The concept is the focus.

I LOVE CHARACTER BUILDING! And I hate it when all that time and effort gets stabbed in the face, dropped into a chasm, or eaten by plague rats..., so I love the idea of a blockchain character sheet, that can be tracked across games, with a permanent record of which campaigns it can't play in anymore because it's dead, but still useable for other games so maybe I can finally get that gestalt lich, wizard, sorcerer, monk, dragon disciple up to 100th level.

I think this is huge for this space. It opens the door for serious gladiatorial projects, and establishes a foundation for games to build around. If everyone has a character token your game will want to incorporate a use for it if they want to compete in that market... and what a market I can see! Do remember that this is just the beginning. In a few years those character sheets will be full blown animated avatars with developers tripping over themselves to put out a game you want to plug them into, to earn money for kicking ass with them!

I hope to see arenas spring up that range from practice competition (no risk), to hardcore (losing character burns!), and everything in-between and this could be the start of it. I'll be looking at this and projects like it, so if anyone knows of anything else that's similar please let me know, ESPECIALLY IF IT'S ON HIVE!! More on -why HIVE- below, and in future posts to the Creekers and Streams Community. Moving on to games up and running...

SPLINTERLANDS

When I first learned of Splinterlands
(https://splinterlands.com?ref=sinistry), I hoped it would have the kind of functionality the article above referenced, and it does have similarities, but it's not a character builder. In the link above you just see the battle play out, but when playing you choose a summoner and then a team within a timed window before watching the match play out as shown above. Cards gain experience and level up by combining them with copies of themselves.

*DISCLAIMER: I'm pretty heavily invested in Splinterlands. I play it, hold/trade assets, and earn about $100 month from it in daily and season end rewards. I don't know my exact earnings on it year to date, but I've grown a $300 investment with two $1000 dollar booster injections into a $5000 collection of assets that will be earning about $150-$200 a month after the launch of the upcoming land expansion and going forward. I started this project in Oct. 2018.

Splinterlands is a great example of the pay to earn model. You can play for free but if you want to earn rewards for winning you have to buy a spell book (currently $10). It's a great game as it stands, and the devs are ALWAYS working to make it better. This is an older post, but it goes into detail about one of the current projects and what's ahead. https://peakd.com/splinterlands/@splinterlands/official-splinterlands-land-presale-announcement
The TL;DR is they're adding a new layer so the players get to take additional actions after choosing teams to buff with spells and items that can only be obtained by minting them yourself or buying them from the open market. The official website will not be producing or selling them. I could write this entire post about my enthusiasm for the game and the future of it, but I'll save it for another time.

GODS UNCHAINED

I've been loosely following this for about a year but I haven't played it. It LOOKS AMAZING and the company behind it, Immutable, made news in 2019 amidst a Hearthstone controversy, which saw a Hearthstone champion stripped of his prize because he made a political statement that threatened the interests of the company.

From nederob.com (link below)
"“Today, Blizzard proved that centralized games companies will censor and exploit their players if it is in their immediate financial interest. We have built uncensorable items with an open economy and market: even if we disagree with your views, we can’t take away your cards.”
(full article here: https://nederob.medium.com/gods-unchained-supports-banned-hearthstone-player-8dc6426cd800#:~:text=Gods%20Unchained%20developer%20Immutable%20has,money%20that%20Blizzard%20took%20away.)

This epitomizes why blockchain gaming is the future of this space. TRUE OWNERSHIP, over REAL ASSETS, that PAY in REAL WORLD VALUE, fully verifiable by anyone, by accessing an immutable public ledger.

NEON DISTRICT

As with Gods Unchained, I haven't really given this a proper look. I noticed it a few months ago, and I think I created a character and maybe tried to do a mission but it was (and still may be) in the alpha phase, so I set it aside with intentions to revisit it...and I guess here we are.

If you didn't watch the teaser trailer above, the short of it is this looks like it's part role playing game (RPG) and part comic book. At a glance, it looks like a "Wolf Among Us" kind of game that will be released in seasons. I'll try to follow it more closely, but if anyone else is or gets into it post about it in the community for the rest of us!

PLATFORMS
Gods Unchained runs on the Ethereum blockchain, while Splinterlands and Neon District run on HIVE. This is significant because ethereum is a Proof of Work blockchain, while HIVE is Proof of Stake. Each has pros and cons, depending on the use, but regarding gaming, it's my opinion that HIVE is far superior for both cost effectiveness and ease of use. Here's why.

Ethereum requires a transaction fee for every thing you do on chain. Every battle result and every card you buy, sell, or trade has a gas fee that can fluctuate wildly. It's not uncommon to see $40 gas fees to trade a $.09 asset (card/token, etc.), and that's just not functional.

HIVE requires users to stake an amount in exchange for recharging Resource Credits (RC), but all transactions are free as long as you have enough HIVE POWER (staked hive) to cover the cost. If you run out of RC you can just wait for them to recharge or stake a few more Hive (currently about $0.15 each at time of writing) to increase your OWNERSHIP of the chain. Since HIVE is a decentralized network, everyone who has HIVE POWER is part owner and can use that ownership however they like. The short of it is, Ethereum is designed for business, while HIVE is designed for communities and that makes it perfect for gamers to build and grow, in my opinion. Additionally, some games (Splinterlands, for example) automatically sign you up for a HIVE account when you buy a spell book and supply you with enough RC to play if you run out.

In closing, the whole point of all of this is to show examples of what's growing in this space and what is worth supporting or investing in and the gaming sector is electrified right now and blowing up. Find some small start ups that are making something you or someone you know would like to play and sprinkle a few bucks in it... see what it becomes.
