The Curious case of The Grenadier

The value system in Splinterlands is something that has always baffled me. Sometimes, you see an extremely badass card, like the exploding dwarf for example being in a common category and so cheap, yet there are ordinary and a tad bit underwhelming cards like The Grenadier going for exorbitant prices.

I get that rarity is a strong determinant in the perception of cards and by rarity, I mean the total number in supply, rather than the game rarity(common, epic etc).

The Grenadier is one monster that has fascinated me for a long time because the price of the card makes no sense. It isn't particularly special and other than the blast ability that it develop later on, there's not much to be excited.

The normal version is listed at around $1.29, while the least price for the gold foiled(listed by me) is valued at $24.5. I get that it is a rare card but that price really doesn't make any sense.

Compared to say Lunakari Mistress, for example, that also has the oppress ability and is from the dice pack, the card isn't exactly scarce. There are currently 1722 normal Lunakari in circulation while there are 1588 Grenadiers in circulation.

Even Gold foils shows a slightly similar trend, with 104 Lunakari against 91 Grenadiers in circulation. However, the price difference between them is astonishing. GF Lunakari is priced at $11, while the least price of Grenadier is $2.5, although it was previously $28 before I set mine.

I don't get what is so special about this epic monster that makes people evaluate it in the same price range with legendary cards. What about you, do you have an idea about why that could be?

cool card for taking down failed summoner / other non attack card in first position as well as snaring x 2 monsters with the blast in earth quake. it a low manna, slow for the slow goes first matches and it's a everyday use card - neutral

Yeah do you think that's why it is the same price with legendary cards?
It is pretty useful but also fragile and is an easy prey to opportunity monster when there's no equaliser rule.

it's currently way over priced in my view. Without looking to much into it - all dice cards are. Need more people to buy the packs - flood the market :)

yes it can be fragile - need to use with shield / right conditions etc

Epic dice: i personally like dragon spirit over grenadier over lunakari (playing with all maxed level cards). Have found dragon spirt is really hard for competitors to hit!

edit: think i paid around $13 ea for grenadier gold foil. should come back to that price eventually

I think it will come back to that level later. Hopefully, someone would have picked up my own before it does :D

You pay 10HBD to activate your account and then you'll be given a starting deck of cards to compete with.

I think it doesn't have to be something special, in many games things that are not at all useful or valuable are expensive, an example is that for many players finding "easter eggs" in games is more valuable than anything else, I imagine that the creators of the game only evaluate the scarce instead of the special.

True though. Although unlike many games, the price of cards is determined by the players but you're right. People's perception of things tend to take prememinence
