This is definitely a super

rough version of a song idea, and needs some serious tweaking, but since it's one of my first attempts at writing something orchestral in Logic, I thought it'd be fun to share and document here. With my new laptop, I now have access to Logic Pro X; I've become SO accustomed to Ableton, so learning a new DAW is a bit of a challenge, but I'm making progress. I've been watching a lot of tutorials, and just sort of playing around within the application, and I'm (slowly) getting the hang of things, lol. There are a few major mistakes in this tune, which I left in, so I can try and fix them up over the course of a few posts.

Logic comes with a really

extensive sound library, and some pretty great sounding orchestral instruments. Some of the higher-range strings and brass have a bit of a fake/digital sort of sound, though that can be tweaked to make them feel a bit more realistic and human. Track 1 provides the harp here, which is where I started. I just played each part with 'musical typing' (using the [laptop] keyboard as a [musical] keyboard, lol), then went in and fixed things up, either by hand or with quantization. Track 2 provides the cellos, which utilize a few different articulations throughout. Logic offers an awesome feature where a single instrument can use multiple articulations on different notes, which allows you to get a more realistic effect.

Track 2, Cellos/Violas.

Track 3 is an oboe,

which just provides a basic little line. I mostly added this just to play around with the woodwinds, and see how they sound. Track 4 is the last non-percussion instrument, with a tuba providing some legato lines in the lower range. The last two tracks are orchestral percussion, and timpanis, which is where I made the most mistakes. Generally, they're little things that are off-beat, or too quiet, or in the case of the kicks, far too weak and a bit odd with the sound of orchestral tracks. There is also a point in the middle of the tune where, when we should return back to the beginning of a section, things jump ahead by a 1/16th note. Apparently, I pasted things offbeat, and didn't discover it until I listened later, lol.

Stay tuned, as I'm going to continue trying to learn more about Logic, which will ideally make writing a smoother process. I spent a lot of time here just correcting mistakes and accidental things I would add by clicking Ableton hot-keys, forgetting I'm not using it, hehe. I'll make sure to do an update as I work on this track more, and fix the mistakes, hopefully making this much more interesting and pleasant to listen to!

According to the Bible, Is it sin against God if a law enforcer is forced to take someone's life in the line of duty?

What do you use for writing/recording? You can definitely find copies of various DAWs online... not saying how or where, but there are ways to get them for free, lol.

well, if you look around online, you can definitely find free DAW's and sound libraries to use. For the last few years, I had been using a copy of Ableton that I didn't have to pay for.
