Futurism: Gino Severini

avatar

He was an Italian painter and writer who took advantage of the divisionist studies acquired in Giacomo Balla's workshop, in addition to the influences of pointillism and cubism implanted by Picasso and Braque. He was partially part of the futuristic trend, he liked the idea they professed but at the same time he had reservations with them. I write two essays that were important in his career as an artist From Cubism to Classism (1921) and Reasoning about Figurative Arts (1936), Severini experimented in his works constantly moving from figuration, to Cubism to only the use of forms geometric to build a scene, creating a circle that was repeated throughout his life. The interesting thing about Severini is that he built his themes from the memory, he walked in the streets observing everything around him to capture it on a canvas, this allowed a different freedom to the painter structuring an image from many others.

The north-south (1912)

It is an urban landscape that refers to a train station, is configured under a cubist technique, dividing different planes into one, the images allude to a walk through the area, taking elements that were from the north side and the south side to create this work full of dynamism that contrasts on the left side with warm colors in yellows, reds and browns with the right side in cold tones in blues.

Simultaniety of Centrifugal and Centripedal Groups (Woman at a Window) (1914)

For this work a totally abstract technique is already observed, with geometric figures that give certain indications or insinuations of the woman who is in the window, such as the head that looks out in a semicircle in blue, cut by a diagonal line which turns into a triangle looking like the shoulders of the body, towards the left side a curve makes its way like wide hips bounded by the violet color; The eccentricity of the color makes the look distracted from what the woman should be, however, at the same time it makes the painting something very striking that somehow catches you in that world of possibilities.
