Vanguards: Futurism/Giacomo Balla

avatar

It was an artistic and literary movement that took place in Italy in 1909 almost at the same time as Cubism in Paris, represented modern life, machinery and as they were able to change society, they were the future, so to do it in Italy who was the country where academicism was the one that reigned was a total anarchy to the established norms. It began as a manifesto written by the poet, writer and playwright Filippo Marinetti, a man with very revolutionary ideas but at the same time warlike, full of violence and misogyny, despite that, thanks to his transgressive ideals inspired by the characteristics of the machinery as the strength, movement, speed and energy allowed incredible painters to leave great contributions demonstrating the movement in the paintings.

"Let us declare that the splendor of the world has been enriched with a new beauty; The beauty of speed. A racing car... a roaring car, which seems to run on a shrapnel, is more beautiful than the Victory of Samothrace." Marinetti, F.

A character who demonstrates with exceptional talent the characteristics that accompanied futurism was Giacomo Balla, who began as a painter influenced by Impressionism and then broke the schemes with pointillist works that can be evidenced in several works done to determine movement and strength.

In the beginning you can see even the figuration within his pictorial works, in the case of Lampada ad arco 1909, it is a strong criticism of natural life, wanting to disappear the moon to be eclipsed by the power that conferred electricity. This work has a lot of rhythm thanks to the repetition of those curved lines that emanates from the lamppost, resulting in a work with great strength and beauty.

As Lampkin, F said “Balla's painting is a very analytical study of the patterns and colors of an electric light beam. Inspired in part by Seurat's pointillism, the futurist wants to convey (and he does) the urgency and energy of the modern world ”

In his work Dynamism of a dog on a leash 1912, oil on canvas, represents the movement of the animal and the chain that goes on its neck through patterns that are repeated simultaneously at different angles of the animal's legs and its tail , which in turn also do in the chain and the feet of the owner of the dog, trying to simulate in a better way the walk that both are taking, and, not only that attracts the attention, in turn, the way in which that the characters are painted with a series of dots gives the work an unexpected texture.
For the following years the figurative representation is completely overshadowed by much more geometric and cubist forms, in his work Landscape 1913, if it wasn't for the title it would be taken as something totally abstract, but, the definition of the same allows the viewer to make the idea that really what you are appreciating is a landscape, only with the use of two pure colors such as blue and orange, creating contrast with black and white values, the way in which you finish the strokes allows you to give a certain sense of continuity like the orange that is in the lower left area, in turn, that way of building from curved lines gives it the ability to move that breaks with the straight lines that move in the center to the right side.

Already for his work Pessimism and Optimism 1923 the idea of recreating something natural disappears completely opening the way to abstraction, this work calls so much attention, you can appreciate the duality that he tried to represent through geometric elements almost like if he was writing the title there, pessimism in black and gray tones It is strongly focused on triangles that go through the softness that is perceived of optimism with blue and white tones in round, oval and semicircle shapes, however, both come together in a harmony and fight between them wanting to dominate the other, towards the corner upper left the blue catches and mixes with the black and the same happens in vice versa in the lower right corner with grays trying to sneak into the positive idea.
