Splinterlands Experiment - Starting Fresh

As I wrote previously, I have been playing dominant with a new account, trying to see just how tough new players will have it, once throngs of newbies are joining us on the Splinterlands. Turns out, it's going to be pretty rough, unless they buy booster packs, or cards from the market. The Untamed starter set cards are terrible, and make it quite difficult to win when used by themselves. Used in conjunction with Betas and Reward cards, the Untamed cards augment your teams nicely. But using just untamed first level cards, winning my daily quest has been very very difficult.

I've only had daily quests in 3 of the splinters, so let me talk them through one at a time.

Green - I've completed 2 quests in green. The first one I discussed in my previous post, and was rather discouraging. The 2nd one was much easier, for one reason:

Having this card strengthened my team immensely. Opportunity for 2 damage AND flying? It's almost OP against other 1st level cards. My quest was not a slam dunk, as I still was dealing with a mostly useless summoner ability, but having the Vulture made it so much more pleasant.

I also got Barking Spider as a reward, but haven't had a chance to use it yet.

Blue - In my last post on the subject, I mentioned that I pulled a Sea Monster. I thought it would become a cornerstone of my teams and it has. As with green, the Untamed summoner ability is only useful in limited circumstances, but having a regenerator on my team increased my win percentage a lot.

Black - This has been painful. And I've had more Black quests than anything else. First, the Summoner. I feel like a broken record, but one again, talking something away from your opponents team is far less valuable than increasing your own stats, because you can't control what your opponent plays. Taking one Ranged attack point away is not useful if the opponent isn't using ranged attacks, or if they are all 1. Most of the time, this summoner ability has little to no effect, especially playing at the lowest levels, when most ranged monsters have only 1 attack point to start with. Add to this that the black monsters are generally pretty slow and don't have much health, and you have a recipe for a lot of frustrating matches.

In summary, it's been a very slow start so far. They only thing that gives me hope is that I might get some reward cards to strengthen my teams. I suspect if I pull a black reward card, any reward card, my odds on winning with black improve. But the issue is that they are now giving out less reward cards. I've earned several potions and some DEC, but not enough to buy any more cards. And since the parameters of the experiment prohibit me from spending any resources except the initial starter deck cost, I have to continue as I have been, hoping for reward cards.

If I do pull a epic or legendary reward card, it will be a tough choice whether to sell it and buy a bunch of less valuable cards or to add it to my arsenal. If I pull a gold I will sell it without hesitation, as the benefit is far outweighed by the value.

Long term I would love to buy some more summoners and start leveling them up, but at 4 cards required to get to level 2, I don't see this happening any time soon.
