The Fall of Anumun

Lyanna looked over the battlefield. The monster of the blight kept growing. Rumors from the Splinterlands said that the blight had been beaten but she didn’t see how. Her people were fighting with a power she had never seen before. Yet each of the battalions was getting smaller. She closed her eyes and with all the might she had left she summoned him.

The Minotaur Warlord appeared towering above her. He turned and looked over the battlefield. He didn’t move yet.

“Why do you wait?”

“I can’t see a way to save them all, so I need to know who to save Lyanna.”

Every time she had summoned this strong warrior in the past it had been to finish a close battle. He had always been able to drive back any enemy. Yet she had already seen other legends of her people fall before the blight. She knew he would not win this battle for her. She looked back at her kingdom. Then turned to face him.

“I have failed them. I don’t have the right to choose.”

Lyanna fell to her knees. She was so weak now and saying those words out loud had let all that pain hit her at once. She knew that the kingdom would fall.

Xander saw Lyanna fall to her knees. He also saw her most powerful warrior still standing near her. Something is wrong he thought. He summoned up a few more flesh golems and flew over to Lyanna.

“Lyanna what’s wrong? Are you hurt?”

“Xander back to your post. I am fine.”

Lyanna got back to her feet. She had to think. What could they do? Xander didn't move away and she was getting upset when a breeze came over her. It brought a calmness that reminded her of a friend. But she had seen her fall on the battlefield. Then she heard something.

“You know where to take them. You have to risk it now. If you stay here we will all fall.”

That voice was hers. But how Lyanna was sure she had died.

“I saw you die”

“The Spirit of the Forest can’t die dear. I was just defeated but I can return. If my people are still alive that is. Trust them Lyanna, give your people hope.”

Lyanna felt it in her pocket. The letter from Alric. He told of an alliance that was forming. The Dark Eternals, Ferexia, and Azmareans had worked together to defeat the blight in the burning lands. He wanted the Lyverians to join them. To help ride the Splinterlands of the blight. She had thought it a lie. But what else could she do?

“Xander sound the retreat.”

“What Lyanna? We can’t lose this fight, Anumun would fall.”

“No Xander we are Anumun and if we live to fight again we can retake this land from them.”

“Where are we going Lyanna?”

“The Burning Lands”

Xander understood. He had heard the rumors of the Alliance as well. He wasn’t sure if it was real but he would follow Lyanna as long as he breathed. He flew into the air and sounded the retreat.

Lyanna turned to the Minotaur Warlord.

“I will need you to cover the retreat. Protect the Wood Nymphs and Magi first. After that use your judge. We head for forest area to the east towards the burning lands and then we move for the border.’

Lyanna felt some power flowing in her again. She reached down deep and summoned one last group to protect the retreat. Earth Elementals and Stone Golems rose from the ground them headed off towards the front lines following the Minotaur Warlord into battle.

The rest of her forces started to retreat. Lyanna started to head out herself as she knew that was the last of her power. What she saw over the next moments would stay with her forever. Her people didn’t all getaway. Yet all of them that feel did it to save another. Warriors she thought to be weakly found a strength she was unaware of. The losses were less than she expected.

They blight must have noticed the new power the warriors had because they stopped pursuing them. Lyanna looked back one more time in her Kingdom. It was far away but she could see the fires starting. Yet she knew that most of the people still lived. We will be back. And next, we won’t be alone. If I have to force the other to come back I will. With that, they started their trip to the land of fire.

Grom had been busy working to repair his home. There was a lot of joy around the town. That was surprising considering only a week ago it had almost been destroyed. The Dark Eternals and Azmareans had stuck around to help rebuild. It was the first time since the blight had arrived that Grom felt good. Then he heard a horn blast and he grabbed his pickax before hearing the second one. Visitors?

Grom headed to gates and looked out. It was an army of Lyverians. Mind you a small one but still. He had not expected that many to respond to their letter. He could see Jarlax down at the entrance talking with Zintar. He was again looking like Darth. Grom didn’t understand why Jarlax had to hide what he was. But his friend had asked him to keep his secret. Just saying that not everyone trusted him. Grom worried a little but Darth had saved him more than once. He assured Grom that the blight was his only enemy right now. That was good enough for Grom for now. Grom waited for them to come closer before calling out.

“Darth got a minute?’

Darth headed over to the Goblin. He was glad that he was willing to keep his secret. He wanted to help stop the blight. The only thing that would take over the Kingdoms of the Splinter lands was him. So he needed to work with the others for now.

“What do you need Grom?”

“I saw you talking with Zintar by the gate. Do you know why there are so many coming to talk to us?”

“Aye, that is the last of the Lyverians. Their homeland was overrun by the blight. They have come to join us with hopes that we will take it back”

“Anumun has fallen? asked Grom shocked to hear that.

Darth nodded and headed off to rejoin his men. Grom had always heard of the power the Lyverians had. Their kingdom was so big. How could have they lost? Grom wondered what his future would hold. Would he be fighting to retake Anumun? Him a kobold fighting for the land of fairies. He laughed a bit before turning to see one of the dead bodies of the giants they had killed. They might not have been as lucky as us. If Malric says they can be trusted then we will do what we have to clear the land of the blight.

That is what I was thinking if I can finish up the story in a few more post so it is more of a complete work.

I have never really read any Splinterlands lore, and I surely enjoyed this one.

Lyanna, the spirit of the forest is my favorite summoner to use, I never imagined her working together with Alric, interesting perspective. Sometimes I wish I could combine my decks and be "extra strong."

I think your story needs more smells. The smell of the fire, the smell of the rotting flesh of the giants, or maybe the smell of magic cleaning it all up.

Thanks for sharing, I found you on the Pimp your post site.

Yes, one of my weaknesses is adding more descriptive stuff. Like smells and feelings. I will try to remember that for the next part. Thank you

Very interesting story. It's always best to back off and live to fight another day than to pursue an impossible mission.

There's something I didn't understand very well, though. Are "Darth" and "Jarlax" the same character!?

Yes, sorry if you read the last part you would have saw that. Jarlax is pretending to be someone else because he is an outcast in his people but wants to help them win this fight. He will have his own reasons for this later on.

Ah, so I understood correctly. Thanks for the clarification!

I've loved fantasy-fiction for as long as I can remember. Tolkien, Brooks... all of the memorable ones. This seems to be right in line with perhaps the "known titles", creating a back story and history. Giving the Splinterlands an extra appeal, than 'just another game'.. you know?

Only thing that set my OCD alarm off...

She closed her eyes and will all the might she had left she summoned him.

I'm betting you meant "with" not "will"? Not downing your wondering story at all. Rather... an honest and positive critique my friend...
You are on to something here... I'd say please do keep creating your story@!
